Cap'n Crunch sails into obscurity

Quote:
The Soggies have finally won: Cap'n Crunch is quietly sailing into retirement.

Long derided by health experts for its high sugar content – a single serving contains 12 grams – the cereal is no longer being actively marketed by Quaker, DailyFinance reports. It appears parent company PepsiCo is forcing the good Cap'n to walk the plank.

Cap'n Crunch was once the No. 1 breakfast cereal, but pressure from the White House and health activists is having an effect on how PepsiCo and other food companies peddle their products to kids. Sales of the cereal were down 6.8 percent in 2010.

Last year, PepsiCo vowed to reduce added sugar per serving by 25 percent and saturated fat by 15 percent in its products over the next 10 years.

If they're tired of being slammed as unhealthy, they could always, ya know, lower the sugar content. Unless they need the sugar to conceal the taste of the cereal.

Haven't had a bowl of CC in a long time. About the only cereal I eat anymore is the occassional bowl of stocked-up Frankenberry or Booberry. Buy about a dozen boxes once a year during the single time they are sold here.

Most of the 'healthy' cereals contain at least 9 grams of sugar per bowl. Sure, they have higher levels of fiber and much better vitamins and minerals when compared to Captain Crunch but CC's sugar levels, at 3 more grams per bowl, seemed an odd thing to be slamming it for.

Agreed. There are cereals with alot more sugar per serving than that. Raisin Bran has more sugar with most of those so called unhealthy cereals, and no additional nutritional content to make up for it.

If that had happened he would've tried a bold maneuver to take command of someone else's cereal, broken intergalatic breakfast rules and gotten punished by being demoted back to Captain. But at least we would've gotten his cereal back.

But alas we might have to wait 1,000 years for any of this to happen.

Now for old times' sake I'm going to have to pick up a box of Peanutbutter C'nC and a box of C'nC with Crunchberries. Two of my favorites as a kid, when by the way, I was rail thin.

3 is a small number.

33 is a much bigger number.

CC has 33% more sugar than other sweetened cereals.

It's more of a cerealized candy.

A quick Google search shows a few articles where it's revealed that this is all just some bad "reporting" by Fox News.

I can't recall the last time I had a bowl of Cap'n Crunch, but I do remember picking compacted sugar/cereal from my teeth for hours afterward. My son (age 11) has never eaten it to my knowledge. So, no big loss here.

I do remember they once sold boxes that were just Crunchberries. That was pure ambrosia and I want some now....

Leap from "Cap'n Crunch isn't on the Quaker homepage" to "Cap'n Crunch is being retired" to "It's the White House's fault" is amazing reporting in a bad way.

Kelloggs Raisin Bran has 17 grams per serving and 250mg of sodium, and nobody is complaing about that. And to think alot of people (that I know at least) sprinkle more sugar on top of that. Kind of makes the Captain look like diet food.

It's all about perception. People see bright colors and sugary coating and assume it must be less healthy than other "healthy" cereals. If people actually looked at the nutritional information on the sides of the box they would see that just because something has the name Bran in the title doesn't make it healthy.

Not so much PC nonsense as nervously applied product-image adjusting.

http://www.karlloren.com/diet/p35.htm

Fun facts - by dry weight, Cap'n Crunch with Crunchberries is 43.3% sugar. Raisin Bran is only 29%. Standard Cap'n Crunch is 40%, and Peanut Butter Cap'n Crunch is 32%.

Yeah, those brightly colored cereals are pretty lacking in nutritional value.

Also, the sugar content of raisin bran is largely due to the raisins, which contain high levels of fructose. At least it's not high fructose corn syrup.

Me, I usually stick to Cheerios. I let myself get about two boxes of Cinnamon Toast Crunch a year.

Ah, but do you remember when they were "Sugar Frosted Flakes", instead of just "Frosted Flakes"?
