Who here is proud to NOT have a black & red colored villain?
"But in our enthusiasm, we could not resist a radical overhaul of the system, in which all of its major weaknesses have been exposed, analyzed, and replaced with new weaknesses."
-- Bruce Leverett, Register Allocation in Optimizing Compilers
I do have red and black villains, and I have red and black heroes. My Warshade is dressed similarly to a Galaxy and is a villain since Going Rogue allowed side switching. Also she has a similar color scheme. The only red on her is her hair, and she's the villain I play the most.
Red and black is just so common because it's the archetype of 'evil'. The two colors blend well to be 'ooh I'm evil'. I've seen it on pure heroes, too.

I've made villains. I've gotten them to 50. I've yet to put on in Black and Red!
Black and Lavendar. Black and Orange (and on this outfit I got many compliments). But never Black and Red.
However, I have had two MAYBE three (I can't remember if my Katana/FA Scrapper had a black/red outfit) heroes with a Black and Red Outfit.
My Katana/Regen Scrapper and my Fire/Fire Tanker, though my Fire/Fire Tanker had some white in the outfit as well, so maybe that doesn't count?

I see intentionally avoiding a particular design as being just as limiting as intentionally overusing it, so I did eventually produce one I'd call red and black. He uses a butler outfit, but has black tech with red energy. Figured I might as well.
That said, I do take pride in not repeating myself (much) and not falling into the easy, obvious costumes that everyone else seems to have.
Just as a random example, a couple of days ago when going through the Praetorian Tutorial, I saw two completely unrelated people with almost the exact same "naked tiger" costume. This is the sort of thing which makes me sad. If I make a costume that someone completely accidentally makes almost the exact duplicate of, I'm doing something wrong.

Sometimes Black is just cool.
Rift-Dancer my main is Black, Dark Purple and muted Gold-yellow
Etherweb my Alt is Black and White, although one of her costumes is red and black because thats the colors of the super group I am in.
Wind-Spirit is Silver and Blue, with grey tones and metalics
And White Swan is White. Thats it, just white.
The Nemean Lioness is Gold tones.
Since my main villain was a poor businessman who wanted to be a superhero based on him growing up on Japanese sentai shows, I was able to do all 50 levels of Rogue Isles with a character who wears blue and white.
It's not something to take pride in, however, since GR allows me to play him as he was truly meant to be: a vigilante.

Red and Black were good enough for Grandpa and they are good enough for you! You kids today with your fancy green and yellow.... Hey! Get off my lawn you punks!
I was going to say I didn't have any red+black villains, but then I remembered my panda bear toon Princess YinYin who started as a character in my costume-award-winning arc Against The WickerWork Khan!* and then progressed to no less than three alts, a scrapper by the same name (villain), a stalker also by the same name, diff server (villain) and a blaster "Lone Panda And Cub"** (hero).
So I guess I lost right there, three times! Pairing red with her (usually the bolero) was just too easy I guess... I hang my head in shame. Maybe I didn't deserve that award after all.
*shameless plug of course, but required
**For extra points, guess what her 'shoulders' option is.
Actually. Most red and black tones work great because use different shades of those colors to balance easier than some. Also it's bold and with some of our tights options they can make things like the Thorn Patern really stand out boldly while others might not be seen.
Also when you use a Neautral like black, which goes with everything, it allows you to use red and another color without making the toon seem garish in color.
I am more proud not to have a Red,White and Blue colored toons, which all look amazing, it's just I see more flag-esque toons with stars and stripes than I do others. Not a bad thing, just not my thing.
I couldn't say if I have one or not but probably. I try to pick a different color scheme for each toon and costume and with like 40 toons that is a lot of costumes.
The tricky ones are the odd colors like purple, orange and violet. Not looking wimpy (or like Super Pimp) in a pastel colored suit is a challenge.

You can't please everyone, so lets concentrate on me.

And that's ignoring the people who deliberately go for a uniform-ish look.

But I showed them, and nobody's laughing at me now!

So please remember that while you may prefer to avoid the standard archetypes entirely the same is not true of everyone. Personally I like to make characters who apply a twist to the standard archetypes (he's a hardened trenchcoat wearing bounty hunter... with magic) or combine two archetypes (she's a catgirl... in power armor) but in most cases even that has also been done before (the two examples I gave are influenced by Harry Dresden and the Kzinti respectively).
Oh yeah, my Cab Spider wears black armor with red trim. all hail Lord Recluse.
Hell my first ever level 50 HERO was clad in red and black before CoV was even in beta.
He started off Red and white, then each of his new costume slots has shifted darker and darker to match the development of his personality.
My first level 50 Villain ALSO wears red and black.
Ultimately my most overused color combination is Black/White/Gold though.
The vast majority of my costumes use a set color scheme..
Primarily Black, Secondary <Color>, Accents in White.
OR
Primarily White, Secondary <Color>, Accents in Black.
Sometimes I add a fourth color if I can get it to not look tacky.
My only black/red toon is a Soldier of Arachnos, it's the only colour that really works on the uniform imo. (I shudder every time I see a bright pink/yellow/green one :I)

My Fortunata uses (the aforementioned) White/Gold/Black.
My Huntsman uses White/Blue/Black.
Still, who here can proudly say they haven't done it?
