Two Curiosity Questions about the "old" game

I started in i3 and left for a few months right around CoV went live (not sure of the specific issues I missed).

I just have a two questions that I have been wondering about:
1) I hear the game only went to level 40 when it started. I think my first 50 was i4 or i5, so can someone tell me when lvl 50 was added?

2) Sorry if this sounds ridiculous, but I remember coming back from my break and it seemed like there was a new type of inspiration. I don't remember the "resist damage" inspirations when I was first playing. I only remember the "defense" ones. Am I crazy? I know I could be totally wrong about this, so I thought I would just ask.

Pretty sure this came in the same issue as Kheldians, which was i3.

EDIT: Nope, the level cap was increaded with Issue 1.

Those are new too. I can't tell you when they were added, though.

1) Issue 1.

2) I don't remember that but they did have resist Mez ones back then Vs today's break and resist Mez ones. They were pinkish and resembled, to me at least, a head wearing headphones. Edit: That's right, orange resist damage are newer, not sure when they added it (Issue 5 or 6?).

Thanks Dech. Funny thing is, I have been "back" for quite some time. I just didn't know the answer to the questions!

I want to say that the orange inspirations were in I5, as kind of a way to placate people who had just been hit with the global defense nerf (GDN). But I may be mistaken on that.

Edit -> And can I also say, that upon seeing the thread title, I jumped a bit for joy, and thought to myself, "Oh, I'll know this!" Not only did I admit to myself that I'm old, but I actually enjoyed it.

Sigh.

Yes. The Break Free/Emerge/Escape inspirations replaced the Discipline/Iron Will/Resolve/Determination/Sheer Willpower inspirations. Iron Will can still be obtained in Siren's Call.

They lasted longer, but had to be used proactively.

It's a weird feeling thinking about how much you predate common game features.

The Market often has me thinking along those lines. We went 3 years without it and now are closing in on the 4th year with it.

VEATs seem old now and they aren't 3 years old yet.

All that really seems new to me are the additions in the last year.

total kick to the gut

This is like having Ra's Al Ghul show up at your birthday party.

Yeah. Last night I was working on getting my oldest character to 50 and realized he was 80 months old.

Which means in 1 month I get a free self rez, so I started to dance a jig.

2 seconds later, I stopped and sat back down in my hoveround X.X

I started this thread, but still have my 72 months badge, not I am not so new.

The market does feel like it has been around forever. I remember when the building itself popped up before we really knew what it was. Now I can't imagine CoX life without it. I remember the awesome reward for TFs was an SO. Now I am not so thrilled when an SO drops unless I am in my 20s or below.

I can remember ranting, "THIS GAME IS GOING TO BE JSUT LIEK WOW!!!!" and how wrong I ended up being.

This has no actual bearing on my most recent complaints and opposition to new game mechanics, wherein my response has been, "THIS GAME IS GOING TO BE JSUT LIEK WOW!!!!"

Ha! I'm the opposite! Anything that was introduced in my first year-ish of play still seems new.

Archery? New!

Sonic? New!

Thugs? New!

...I forgot what experience means.

Not right with Issue 5, but a mere 20 days after. The timing is still right on for them being a palliative effort from GDN.

Added Damage Resistance Inspirations (Reduces the damage you take from an attack). Drop rate for non-defensive Inspirations has not changed. 50% of defensive Inspirations that drop will be the old Defense (avoid getting hit) Inspirations, and 50% will be the new Damage Resistance Inspiration.

Oh, look, that's the same patch that reduced Believer from 10 defeats of Sally, who was still on a once in a blue moon spawn timer, to 2. I was just talking about that to someone while we were gathering for a Katie TF last week.

And how wrong you still are.

It's funny, I tried City of Heroes way back at release and was underwhelmed enough to not even play out the first month.

Now 3 years ago I tried it again and so much was different, I can't imagine what it was like for the folks who played the whole time as some of these changes took place. Heck, even in the 3 years that I have been actively playing, a lot of things have changed or been added.

Wonder how things will look in another 3 years, because City of has the same feel to me as Asheron's Call and Anarchy Online, games that filled a different niche or went their own way in doing so, and are both still live after 10+ years.

Yeah, there are also now the Present Inspirations, from the Holiday Event, and the special Inspirations to help take down Hamidon.

I seem to remember some new Inspirations were introduced... oh, wait, that was in a Beta, probably shouldn't mention that. But, um, there might be some associated with the new Incarnate content. Just guesswork, not based on anything I've actually seen.

Let me blow your mind: this game is older than World of Warcraft.

So no one else thought that Dumple was just, you know, joking?

I thought it pretty obvious, but YMMV.

I find your lack of signature disturbing.

Pretty sure they were added because sonic was introduced, and people were suddenly fighting mobs with -resist powers.

I know. I been here all along, though I did give it a run after getting a lengthy free trial for a birthday gift once.

No worries, mine was accidentally removed during a surgical procedure years ago.

No, the context of that earlier statement was that, even though City pre-dated WoW, it was going to developmentally trend towards WoW because that's what everyone held as the ideal for MMOs.

To be sure, there are "staples" of MMOs, but City has always done a good job (IMO) of turning the trope on its head and doing it in its own unique way. I have a...pessimistic view of the new raids, but we shall see.
