I wonder if there are any real life islands in the world named Alderaan that would make an effective target for these new (nearly) fully operational battle weapons.

If the weapon is a FREE Electron Laser System, why does it cost $163 million dollars? I think the taxpayers are getting screwed again.

Well since the Federal Government is living in a world where hammers cost $400 and toilet seats cost $800 it seems reasonable that things labeled "free" anything costs them $163 million. Imagine how much it would have cost if had been called the "regular" electron laser system.

I love FETs, they are small, compared to chemical pumped lasers and the method behind inducing the laser effect is downright funny.

Basically when you shake (the "official" term is wiggle) electrons hard enough, they will emit photons. Change the frequency you shake them, they produce light at difference frequencies (from infrared through X-rays). True, you need a linear accelerator to first get the electrons up to near light speed first and at reasonable density but that's relatively easy to do.

As long as they don't route the laser power through the ships' warp drives, which will cause it to be cut off during a warp drive imbalance situation, I'm sure they'll be fine.

The electrons are free. It's the photons that get expensive.

I was going to make a FREEM joke, but it would suck after this.

So it's basically the laser equivalent of putting a can of beer in a paint shaker, then opening it?

Neat!

Sigh. You've hit a pet peeve of mine that I'm not allowed to address very well. So I'll be vague. That expensive "Toilet Seat" story is pretty much blown out of proportion. At work, on my desk, I've got the parts-list book with that particular item in it; it's still manufactured. The cost these days is considerably higher than $800; a better term for it would be "Lavatory Subassembly". There are some folks in the office who were there when the rumor was new. Yes, the US military did indeed pay that price at that time. Which was a discounted price for buying in bulk; commercial airlines were paying rather more than the military price. They still do.
There's a similar story behind the so-called $400 hammer.

So the new doomsday device is a laser pen, surgical laser, and a Doomsday weapon? Could just see the headlines now. School destroyed because teacher had laser on the wrong setting. When asked why the teacher had a doomsday weapon, he said he was using it for demonstration purposes in his physics lab.
