Good intentions make you hate people?

Well, this was a weird encounter. Maybe I don't get out much and that's just how people communicate these days, but this was just... Creepy. In fact, I'll just plop down the whole conversation:

Some Guy: i wanna help u train
Some Guy: invite me to your team
Me: No, thank you.
Some Guy: faq u
Some Guy: lmao
Me: Charming.
Some Guy: k

To give you some background, I was on a fresh level 7 Scrapper I made yesterday from the suggestions in the Costume thread, who had just trained at Foreshadow and was replacing Training enhancements with level 10s. Don't ask, I just like to do it.

All of a sudden, a blind invite pops up. I don't know what for - team, SG, levelling pack, what - as I don't really read them, I just turn them down. Then this level 12... Something, I didn't check AT, walks up to me and says the above. I don't tend to make a point of hassling people over blind invites, I just turn them down and move on, but I've never been told to faq off over it before.

So I figure I'll just go back to my mission and kill some stuff on the way, but the guy's following me with Blazing Aura on and butting into my fights. Hmm... Blazing Aura this early sounds like either a Blaster or a Tanker.

Good thing creeps can't follow you into missions

---

Things have been weird like that for this character ever since I made her. I mean, the very first thing that happened when I stepped into Outbreak was some guy spamming Levelling Pact invitations on me faster than I can refuse them. What the faq? A team invite I get - you want help or company or feel like you have to. But a levelling pact is a commitment, and I'm sure as faq not going to accept that from some guy I've never met before.

Then he goes on to tell me to stay there so he can show me his "spider," which turns out to be an almost exact replica of Spider-Man, and my eyes damn near popped out when I slapped my head over that. I warned him it was petitionable (but didn't actually file a petition) but the guy seemed convinced that because he had a beetle on the chest and his name wasn't Spider-Man, he was safe. Hope that works out for the guy.

---

What is it about this character that attracts weird people to me? I don't actually do or say anything to attract them. I'm just standing around and... Well, shopping, or setting up key binds or speaking with a contact. Does this character really look so weird?

Heh. I don't know if I have an answer for your (mostly?) rhetorical questions.

But out of curiosity, did he actually tell you to "faq" off? Or is that just your version of it here? Either way, I'm amused.

The only reason I ask is because it seems some characters I make tend to gather a... Following, let's say. People will come over to have a look, and sometimes when I'm just standing around talking, people will come up and start circling around and getting in-between me and my team-mate and sometimes even try to chat me up... In that endearing barely-coherent broken English we're all familiar with.

That's SOME characters. Other characters people simply ignore like I don't exist. A lot of the time they're female characters, predictably, but seriously - does the "dragon form" in that pic actually look female?

He said what I quoted, but that's how I read it. Unless he was implying he wanted to ask me frequently asked questions, which... May not be out of the realm of possibilities.

Yeah, the F.A.Q. bit did pop into my head.

And personally, no, neither of the forms of your character would make me want to walk up and start interacting with the person behind it. I suppose the human form has a kind of goth schoolgirl look going on, which might get you a certain niche of interest, but the dragon form? That would definitely weird me out.

Probably just coincidence. I've had lots of people run around or twirl around within a short distance of my characters but they don't usually bother me like you are describing. I rarely get blind invites either, at least lately... but that may be because I'm almost always in a team and join the SG within minutes of creating a new character.

I did have a strange thing happen last night in Cimerora - a guy asked me if I wanted to join a villain team (not exact wording but that was the gist of it). I tried to answer him back that I was already in a hero team but got the "... does not accept private messages from enemy factions" which I thought was hilarious. Everyone in our party got the same request. He probably thought we were all terribly rude for not responding

Well, she does have some female qualities. Not sure I'd ask her out for a date though. At least, not in her dragon form.

I have had similar situations occur as well.

There I was between a rock and a hard place. Then I thought, "What am I doing on this side of the rock?"

That's actually a collage I put together for the costume redesign thread. Most of the time when I play this one, I'm using the dragon since that's what she fights in, and that's basically what the bulk of City of Heroes constitutes. I can see people approach a cute if (intentionally) weird girl, but I don't actually use that costume almost at all.

And the part I wonder is... I agree with you that the dragon form is weird. It weirds ME out, and I made it But that's kind of why I made it to begin with, so I wonder if that same weirdness that repulses some people isn't the kind of thing that draws a specific kind of person out. I mean, if I saw something like that running around, I'd definitely want to take a closer look, which is why I'm thinking the creep factor may be contributing here.

I'm not on a high-population server... Not VERY high - Victory here. And I haven't really noticed a large influx of brand new players, which is what these guys feel like they are (part of why I try to not be a dick to them as best I can). Maybe I'm just looking for reasons where none exists, but this girl has already attracted two weirdos in two days, and that's a new record for me.

I think it looks pretty cool. As for the rest of it, I'd chalk it up to you're just having a random streak of weirdos coming across you.

total kick to the gut

This is like having Ra's Al Ghul show up at your birthday party.

The big chest? I dunno. I'd petition both of them.

Fun fact: The dragon form has a significantly smaller chest than the human form I really have no reason I can give for this, and neither is past middle (didn't look right on such a tiny human).

I didn't petition either of the two, mostly because I'm not sure there's sufficient ground to. One of them seemed like he was just a little slow, and the other guy was a dick, but not really THAT out of line. Maybe because I left for my missions pretty quickly.

Feel free But you can thank the people at the costume redesign thread who came to my aid and helped me put it together. Even if it picks up weirdos, it's still worth it, I think

were you standing in line to begin with? if so, then pay for your groceries and get moving, im stuck in the same line and want to get home.

anywho, well, the outfit is striking, i rather like it but then again, im a fan of any monstrous character that is put together well... given his grammar and style, maybe he just is very young and thinks all female characters ingame are actually females who look exactly like their characters and he was attempting to have a conversation with significantly limited vocabulary and social skills. the weird thing to me was the alteration of rude-jocular-friendly in the interaction, that is some serious weird interaction right there. I have gotten a few comments on either my way out there costumes or someone gets the silly puns or references in their names, but nothing like that.

for the record, this is my current project, rather pleased with the look, and has gotten comments, he looks like a hero, right? http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...8-18-57-41.jpg

Yes.. better would be: "They need to learn how to socialize.".

I've often wondered why some people/characters seem to get more attention than my female characters. Maybe mine look more like a character created by a guy: Barbie-doll look (I prefer blondes, okay?) but chest slider is NOT all the way to the right (just 2/3rds) ; while other people's characters and clothing styles might indicate a better chance there's an actual female player behind the character?

Of course, maybe I should count my blessings that I'm not bothered as much as others by the "weirdos".

Suuure! Looks perfectly heroic Seriously, though, cool costume. Watch out for weirdos out there

That's actually an interesting topic. To my mind, weird characters seem to catch the eye of a particular type of person, because they tend to stand out a lot. Just the other day, for example, I saw someone say IN BROADCAST "Ew! Slime Girl smells funny!" I didn't catch that until after I was out of the D, though. Point is, Slime girl stands out. A lot. Even in her non-glowing version. Some people just walk around and don't care, but some do stop by to wonder why the hell this thing exists.

I can only speak for myself, but I know my eyes kind of skip over "ordinary" looking characters, by which I mean essentially people in clothes. I appreciate that that sounds awfully inclusive, but consider that over half of our skin tones are non-human, and over half of the human ones are black, yet I always seem to see people use the same 3x3 colours top right. I don't read into that, it just doesn't catch my eye. However, whenever I see, say, a blue woman or a green man, or even a full robot, I go and have a look, because it's interesting an unusual. I can only imagine my weirder designs catching the eyes of even weirder people. Considering the kind of... Things I've had to get past to even find material for some of these, I can kind of see how that could be problematic.

I don't, however, get many leeches on my female characters, even though not all of them are very conservative. Hell, I have one who goes around in chainmail bikini. I attribute that to the fact that the game has such a vast supply of cute girls, be they piloted by men or women, that the chances of attracting a lech are fairly remote. The game lacks, by contrast, a very large supply of weird and undefinable characters, so when you do take one out for a spin, you're essentially mopping up all the potential weirdos, since there isn't much else for them to see.

An unfortunate side effect, to be sure, but the costumes are worth it.

You know Sam, it could be that they see your character, see the wider sliders, and assume it's a female player.

You hear it on the boards all the time...girls don't make super skinny girl characters. Girls don't make characters such and such way.

Of course, none of that's true. There is no rule as to what a character will look like, based on the gender of the player. But people other like to think there is, and maybe you're just catching those players.

True, that's possible. There's this myth that when guys make female characters, they're always busty cheese cakes and when women do it, they're always conservative and stylish, so you can always tell who made what. I, personally, don't buy it, but it is out there, and I've seen many people discuss that over the years.

However, I have some doubt that this guy had the mental faculties to make that kind of predictive stylistic judgement Granted, quality of spelling on the Internet isn't a foolproof indicator of personal intelligence, as some very intelligent people are also lazy and type like complete idiots just the same. However, what really makes me think that is barging in on a total stranger, making demands and proceeding to pester and insult them is not the hallmark of a discriminating person who thinks this far ahead.

In my case, though, I don't think I tend to leave much room to speculate on what the gender of the player behind the character is when I team with people, as I just don't tend to ever be "in character" and "I'm not the kind of guy who" tends to be a big part of my regular expressions

Lot of pervs out there.
