I like my VEATs more than any of my characters, but I don't like Claws, Psi, or SR all that much as regular ATs.
I guess I'd have to say my favorite powerset is Fire.
I can:
Kill it with Fire.
Burn it with Fire.
Out-DPS it with Fire.
AoE it with Fire.
Let out out my inner-pyro without the evil leprechaun telling me to.
I think I have quite few toons that share a powerset with 3 or 4 toons. I am not interested in being known for anything I just like concepts. If she is happy with empathy then that's good but just like Golden Girl basically has a lvl 50 Golden Girl on every server with the same sets I think that "If it was me doing that?", I would be missing out.
He will honor his words; he will definitely carry out his actions. What he promises he will fulfill. He does not care about his bodily self, putting his life and death aside to come forward for another's troubled besiegement. He does not boast about his ability, or shamelessly extol his own virtues. - Sima Qian.
I've played every Rad/ defender combo to at least lvl 40. Three of which I went all the way to 50. In additional I have 2 lvl 50 /Rad corruptors and 3 lvl 50 /Rad trollers.

I don't have huge obsession with one set but some sets I have more than one or two.
Spine Set for Stalker. I have a 50 Spine/EA and 42 Spine/Nin
Sonic Blast: Sonic blast on Blaster and sonic/cold corr, sonic/pain corr. Now come to think about it, I think Sonic Blast could be my first obsession. I love the noise and I love -resistance debuffs.
Merc and Necro MM. I just like the theme and I like the fact that they are kinda under-powered and not overly used. I have 50 Merc/Poison and 50 Merc/Storm. 50 Necro/Pain and 46 Necro/Storm.
What's left is to normalize all Assassin Strikes and improve Stalker's old sets (Claw, MA and EM)! You don't need to bring back the missing PbAoE attack. You just need to make the existing ones better! For example, make Slice a WIDER and LONGER cone.
Anything that makes my opponents flail in the air
I don't have an actual obsession, but when I look at my relatively small roster of characters, the pattern that emerges for me is "weapons." I have a dual blades brute, a war mace brute, a claws stalker and a broadsword stalker. I may be creating a new scrapper or stalker who, purely for concept reasons, will also be broadsword, and I love the set enough that I won't mind playing it again.
I suppose claws is not necessarily a 'weapon' set in the same sense that the sword and mace sets are, but I view it as one on that particular character.
She said, I can always be of help no matter what the situation.

Its very intresting to read the why people like certain sets, I notice I tend to use fire alot on my tanks (melee mainly..mainly)
"...well I have wrestled with reality for thirty-five years, Doctor and I am happy to state I finally won out over it." Elwood P Dowd (from the movie Harvey)
I have to play devil's advocate here with the terminology.
5 of 9 powers in Empathy do nothing if people aren't taking damage. Three heal damage in a burst, one heals over time, and the final one heals someone back to life. The anti-mezz power Clear Mind is nearly textbook standard for video game healers except that it lasts a little while. Likewise the shield portion of the Fortitude buff. The only two powers remaining are garden variety "mana battery" powers, the offshoot being +Recharge.
This is all my way of saying that I have a problem with people who have a problem with the word "healer." It's just a word. And an apt one. Somehow it's been construed to mean "someone who only heals." Well since a tanker doesn't only tank and crowd control doesn't only control why do so many people clutch their pearls when talking about "healers" as if the term is uniquely awful?
Tex, I'm not trying to be dismissive or rude, but this debate is completely over. Both sides will remain strongly commited to their opinions no matter how eloquently we all state our cases (as you did exceptionally well in my opinion).
Let's try to let this thread continue closer to the orginal (fun!) topic since the "healer" one has been done to death.

While I can appreciate not wanting to derail the thread, the "debate" isn't a debate. It's just piling on about "healers" yet again, and didn't start with me. I responded to what was already stated (and is stated over and over on the boards in incredibly incendiary language without often enough being challenged).
Energy Blast all the way.
I grew up reading the 70's Marvel "cosmic" characters like Adam Warlock, Captain Marvel and the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Energy Blast just fits that whole vibe - its flashy, has a powerful feeling (even if you dont defeat an enemy, you send them flying) and ties in with all sorts of cosmic power concepts.
Superhero comics and especially games are funny like that. Why does a scrapper fighting with bare hand or weapons do more damage than a tank who can lift 100 tons? Its for storytelling or balance reasons, even if it doesn't make internal sense.
So while, say, Assault Rifle, does the same damage as Energy Blast, I'd much rather be crushing atoms between my fingers than carrying a gun.
Mechanically I like Energy Blast for not having a hard mez. Many other blast sets pack much of their defensive punch into a single power (Cosmic Burst, Tesla Cage) whereas Energy Blast spreads it out more broadly. It also makes certain enemies much more challenging, eg Tsoo Sorcerors, if you can mez them outright.
I've got 5 and counting. I'm sure i'll make more.
[EDIT] Concepts are of course flexible. An Assault Rifle blaster could be carrying the One True Gun, an artefact from some kind of Platonic realm that exists outside time. An Energy Blaster could be an ex-fireman who built a suit of armour in his shed with a high pressure hose. But Energy Blast still screams "cosmic" to me

Anyway. My obsession would be Luminous Blast. Matter of fact every last one of my peacebringers has taken that set.

Since the release of i18, I have a slight obsession with KM. I currently have 6 KM toons at 50. 2 Tanks, 3 Scrappers and a br00t. I just enjoy the way it plays and have intentions to make a few more, with different secondary's. Have tried it with Dark, Ice, Shield, Regen and Fire x2. Still WP, Invul and mebe Elec on my list.
I also enjoy fire blast on ruppy's, i have fire/dark, fire/traps, fire/kin, fire/cold all at 50
For me it is Shields. I have all the primary that pairs with Shields at 50 with Scrappers but KM, it is only at 32 right now. I also have two Shields brutes, SS/SD and Elec/SD.
I love AAO and Shields Charge! I like to min/max toons too, so Shields is great for that.
I'm just leveling up my first Archery/ and Electric Blast/ Blasters, and even though the first has never interested me much and the second has always seemed underpowered, I'm LOVING both of them. I love knocking a guy on his a** with Power Thrust, then shooting and "arresting" him from point-blank range while he's on the ground. With the Elec/ blaster, I can easily see falling in love with draining entire mobs of their endurance in one or two moves.
Sheer poetry.
Traps has become my vice. Like Adeon I like AR as well. So I have the best of both a Traps AR Defender. I have 4 traps and 2 AR toons all at 50 because its just so easy to level them up.

Anything Fire
I've played fire/kin, fire/rad, fire/therm, and fire/ta trollers at 50.
Fire/Fire, Fire/Regen, and Fire/Shield scrappers at 50.
Fire/Kin, Fire/Cold, Fire/pain, and fire/therm Corrs at 50.
Fire/Em, Fire/elec, fire/mm, and fire/dev blasters at 50.
A fire/fire brute and an ice/fire tank at 50.
If therm counts as fire I've had 5 lvl 50 therms.
Simply put for high end speed TFs you can't beat fire.
/Regen and /Willpower. I have one of each primary (scrapper & brute). The /regen scrappers predate the willpower ones (obviously) but they're both heavily favored.

Trick Arrow. Since 2008 I've had every Trick arrow/ - /Trick Arrow combination. It's hands down my favorite power set. Be it PvE, or PvP I can't help making something with the almighty Trick Arrow!
Willpower here. All but one of my melee toons (the Peacebringer-) are Willpower of one sort or another...
Part of it is simple familiarity. Like Dual Blade, it's simply the one set of its type that I know best. I know how it handles at various levels, the limits it can take and exactly what to expect. I'm also pretty good at assigning slots and picking enhancement sets for WP at this point. There's rarely any question of what to put where.
The rest is just preference. I've tried a couple of other mixes, but there's always something about them I don't like... The way they play, the way they have to be enhanced, the way they're toggled, the gaps in defense... *Something* that gets in the way and makes me say, "You know, I really miss Rise and Heightened."
@Brightfires - @Talisander
That chick what plays the bird-things...
i have a basic rule not to duplicate powersets, even across different ATs, mainly because they aren't 'new' to me. i also can't ever get into combinations with the same element in both sets (i've tried ice/ice tankers multiple times for example... can't do it).
that said, the only two duplicates i have are a grav/icy and a grav/elec dom, mainly because i love gravity but icy assault didn't do it for me, and two bane spider soldiers (i love executioner's strike!).
however, i do notice certain sets have appealed to me more than others. i have characters with fire blast, fiery assault, fire melee, and fire aura, and dark blast, dark armor, and dark melee (scrapper and stalker). i guess elec is getting up there too now with elec manipulation, elec assault and elec melee. i guess i really like flashy animations over 'power hits'.

I'd have to say Martial Arts. Which is odd since until a couple of years ago I really had only the one MA scrapper, who was 25 or 30. But then I leveled her up to 50 and really got into the set. Shinobu Dragonheart was MA/Invul, which I liked a lot, so I decided to make an MA/WP scrapper as well. This was Tiffany Blackheart, who's since become just about my favorite character to play.
However as I was leveling up Tiffany I was working my way through the Striga and Croatoa arcs, and we had a double-exp weekend. I did not want to level Tiffany twice as fast, but I was still enjoying MA a lot. I had an MA/WP scrapper on Freedom that I liked named Ballet Dancer (because the high kicks and overall graceful flow of attacks suggested ballet to me), so I created a clone of her on Virtue specifically for playing during that double xp weekend, and named her Nina Ballerina (Ballet Dancer was taken -- Nina Ballerina is an old ABBA tune ^_^ ).
I played a lot that weekend and got Nina well up into the 30's. After that, I leveled both Tiffany and Nina up to 50. Also around this point I started playing on Freedom again, and wanted a level 50 so I could hami raid. Because I was still infatuated with MA I took picked Ballet Dancer, who was already about 25, renamed her and redesigned her (the name Jalia was suddenly available, which had been the name of my first 50 on Pinnacle as well as the first name of my original EQ barb shaman).
...end result, I have 4 level 50 martial arts scrappers, three of them MA/WP. (And all three slotted based on a very good (and expensive) build that I got from the scrapper forums that I really REALLY liked a lot, makes those three toons nearly unstoppable.)
And I still like MA, so when I decided to level up a stalker, I went with MA/WP as well. Though the stalker versions are significantly different for both power sets. I miss my AoE leg sweep.
I do have a few other Willpower scrappers and a willpower tank, all between level 25 and 35.
My other favorite set (or pair of sets) is very likely dark/dark defender powers. I have a level 45 dark/dark fender, a level 47 dark/arrow fender, a level 50 force field/dark fender, and my level 44 mastermind is bots/dark.
And... I have 9 level 50 scrappers overall. Two are katana/regen and one is broadsword/regen; one is broadsword/shield and one is electric melee/shield. Only have the one invul scrapper (and one invul tank), and no dark, fire, electric armor scrappers at all.

my lil RWZ Challenge vid
This morning I was talking with my wife, who told me her latest empathy character (Disco Diva) is 6 bubbles away from 50. Out of curiosity I asked her how many 50 empathy type characters did she have...well she started counting and between defenders and controllers nine, with lots of others in their 20s and 30s etc. Now I have read a lot of negetivity about "healors", and how boring they are to play. So I asked Jen why Empathy? She said, I can always be of help no matter what the situation. Damage heal, standing around in a PvP zone clear mind the blasters, in Atlas Park chatting forting and ABing the lowbies, plus she is always on a team.
So I am curious does anyone else have this obsession not with an archtype, but with a power set, and why? I think the results might be intresting to read. |

My goal in all my alts is to have one of each powerset for each archetype. Because the numbers of primaries and secondaries aren't the same, sometimes to make one set I need to double on another, and I tend to pick one I liked the first time around. However, since some powersets are used by a lot of archetypes, there's a few that I have as many as five times... but nothing more than twice on the same archetype. (For reference, the powersets that I have five times are Trick Arrow, Invulnerability, Sonic Resonance, and Electric Armor. I should mention that I wouldn't even say they're my favorite powersets, it just kind of happened...)
If it's fun, you're doing it the right way.
I personally don't get the whole playing the whole set to 50 over and over thing, especially in the cases of it being the same powerset combination (I once knew someone with several level 50 Invulnerability/Super Strength Tankers), but to each their own. I know the way I make characters would drive some people crazy.
ETA: If we're going into things like origins and power pools, I pick Super Jump on all of my characters unless I can think of a good reason not to. I'd say almost half of my characters have it or plan to have it.
