Your window is a flat plane too, doesn't mean everything outside is 2D. Do you need to see branches and birds popping out into your room to tell it's 3D? If you look at a monitor playing a modern game head-on, it's like looking out a window, there are 3 dimensions, and if it's a game with good graphics at a high resolution on a big monitor you could almost swear you could stick your arm through the screen. Objects popping out at you add nothing.

I would be in the 'would like' group. Just using the regular nVidia drivers, I get a kick out of playing stuff like Need for Speed and Modern Warfare. CoH is open GL though! DoH >.<

3D done well is nice. Not OMGWOW!, but nice. Now, if Nvidia supplies the drivers, and someone wants to play CoH in 3D i'm all for it. i don't mind native support for 3D being built into games even though the odds are low i'll spend the money to use it. (i also use an audio set up of two speakers and a subwoofer despite most games having native support for far fancier setups.)

Also, is it just me, or did anyone else think "fap, fap, fap, fap, fap" when they saw this?*:

Who is that, anyway?

*Just to be clear it was because i imagined him as some sort of cyborg, possibly only a head and neck, engaged in being visually stimulated over the internet since the image was a forum avatar. <.<

Every 3D animated movie ever made, how about? There is no "passable" 3D. It destroys the colour of the movie as you're watching it through coloured filters, it makes me, personally, crosseyed and gives me a headache and the glasses always get covered in filth just as I watch even if I wiped them beforehand.

And all of that for a pretty shallow optical illusion that just on its own has the capacity to make my head hurt like I was dropped. There is nothing redeeming in 3D, and I am sick and tired of not watching movies because they air in 3D.

Do you have any idea how long I waited to watch a decent copy of Avatar without watching it in a confusing, colourless mess?

You're not talking about those old-style red-and-blue glasses, are you? Granted, I haven't seen a 3D movie in ages, but even when I saw the last one years ago, they were using polarized glasses that had no color to them. Most home theater/computer 3D implementations that I know of use LCD glasses that "blink" with an extremely high refresh rate, so fast you can't perceive that each lens is "off" half the time. Again, those glasses are either completely opaque or completely clear, no colors involved.

There are 3D technologies out there on the edge that don't even use glasses at all.

Do I honestly need to explain the difference between a window and a monitor to you? :I

Sounds to me more like a personal health issue for you, then . The animated movies i've seen in 3d were just what I said, mostly decent movies that the 3d didn't hurt and in some cases made for some cool effects, but then I don't suffer headaches and whatnot. I have no idea how the glasses are getting dirty while you're wearing them though.

Sometimes people's head shape don't agree with the glasses themselves; I had an old pair of glasses (prescription) that would give me one monster of a headache if I wore them for more than an hour.

Right now 3D is just a gimmick. This is not the first time we have gone though a 3D craze. We have one every 20 or so years. The 3D lovers always claim that people that don't like it have to suck it up and get used to it because 3D is the future, but that still hasn't happened. There is a large percentage of the population that have issues with the current type of 3D. Large enough that no movie will ever be 3D only. Until there is a 3D system that doesn't cause headaches, 3D will not be the standard.

No movie ever? *pssst* it had 9ft tall blue aliens and made more money than any movie ever.

You can try. I'd like to hear it.

Haven't you ever been in one of those rooms with giant screens on the wall pretending to be windows that show images of outside but can be changed to any season or environment? Or at least seen one on TV? It's pretty cool stuff.

Avatar certainly wasn't 3D only. I watched it opening day in normal vision at one of my local theaters. Worldwide only 25% of screens showing the movie were showing the 3D version.

i still haven't seen the 3D version.

Both in visuals and characters.

Seriously, the characters weren't that bad, but some aspects of the plotting and setting made me go, "Wait, what?"

I am liking some games, NWN2, DDO but Champions and STO not so much. In the first two if you ramp up the slider its like watching the Starwars battle chess game, only way clearer.

Sometimes it feels like the game is already in 3d, I think it would only add to it?
It'd be cool, I love 3D! But it gives me massive head aches.

I got suckered into buying a pair of these a few years ago, lol.

Damn you Wil Wheaton and your persuasive selling techniques!

The glasses actually weren't too bad. Far from true 3d. They sit here behind my computer in brand new condition with a layer of dust. Should break them out and see how COH looks. If they still work that is!

Funny, my experience with 3D Avatar was one of an amazing vivid and rich world. It was bright, colourful and crisp and it's 3D was perfected, not just gimmicky.

I'm upset that I won't be able to experience that again without shelling out for a 3D tv.

I'm not talking about those cardboard and cellophane monstrosities, no They handed us essentially Albert Wesker glasses, but those still had tint in them and, more than anything, blocked some light so they made everything darker. I've seen Avatar on DVD since, and the quality on my dinky 17'' crappy LCD was far, far, FAR superior to that I got from clearly the best, most expensive cinema in town, all because of those god damn glasses.

I have no idea what glasses you're actually talking about, I just know that's not what I got here.

I actually do know why it makes my head hurt. My brain does not process optical illusions well. I recognise them instinctively and my eyes refocus and move in order to compensate for them. I see the optical illusion as just that - an illusion, and I can never accept it as real depth. It looks like a hologram sticker.

This constant refocusing and readjusting makes my eyes hurt, makes the muscles in my eyes burn, and I get headaches when any of the muscles in my head start to hurt. That's eyes, cheeks, neck, anything. 3D is not and will never be real enough to fool my subconscious. All it will ever do is give me headaches.

I remember someone a while back posting one of those "holograms" that you had to "cross your eyes" to see. Not only did that make my eyes hurt like a SOB, but I was never actually able to see it. The first time I saw 3D of any kind, I just saw disconnected coloured lines that didn't meld into any sort of shape or form. I had to actually cross and refocus my eyes in order to adjust them into some kind of coherent image. I don't know how to see 3D and no - it does not happen instinctively.

And I sure as hell ain't gonna' bother learning how to watch my movies, especially since 3D DOES NOT NOT LOOK GOOD even when I can actually see it. It's a whole load of wasted effort and pretty much double the ticket price to see a worse version of a movie. I don't care if it's the crappiest movie that I'm going to see. I will not pay double the price for half the quality.

What you are seeing through a monitor is on the monitor. It is a 2D scene displayed on a flat 2D plane that simulates the appearance of a 3D scene.

Oooh, so if the game had true 3D support then it would stop being a bunch of colors displayed on a 2D screen that simulate the presence of 3D, and would instead become a bunch of 3D objects with a transparent screen in front of them? That sounds great!

There is no such thing as true 3D in games or movies yet. Maybe sometime in the future. All we have is some fancy technology that tricks our eyes into thinking we are seeing 2D objects in a 3D fashion.
