This is kind of why I thought you might have a hard time with themed contests. Especially something offbeat.

There's probably some out there, but the author community that actually participate in the forums is very small. You could get an accurate headcount from past contests I'm sure. Maybe like 20 of us? And I haven't even been playing in months due to health issues. Just pop by the forums every so often.
  2. When I said a million times longer I guess they really took that number to heart, lol.

It's a way for the soloer to not be c blocked. Sounds good. That's all a soloer really wants.

I'll be running a Kahn or two this week, because I happen to like that TF.

Next week, however, I'll be skipping the WTF, because I don't really like Lady Gray.

If these Task Forces were mandatory, like you're saying here, I wouldn't be allowed to skip one. But that is exactly what I intend to do.

The whole thing is optional, always was, and more than likely always will be. The only thing that makes anything "mandatory" is your own perspective that says it is. That's the point I've been trying to make in ALL my posts on the subject lately: The ONLY person forcing you to do anything is YOU.
Mandatory in the fact if you ever want to advance/level shift your character. Basically locked out of content if you DON'T do the TF's.

Every player should have the right to advance their character. If you can't advance without doing the TF then the crap is mandatory.

What is so hard about that concept?
  4. Risk = Reward - Time * Subscription divided by a monkeys butt squared.

I think that was one of Einstein's first equations!

Seriously though. This game to me 'use' to be like this. You could obtain anything if you put enough time in it. People who took more risk, such as TF's, would tremendously reduce their time to achieve said reward. So the more risk the less time. That's what you get for taking more risk.

I said 'use' to be like this, but since there's mandatory weekly TF's, the game has departed from its core values trying to copy other MMORPG's.

Mob levels... Well it's been said. The classes are too unbalanced to make it fair.
  5. There's multiple bosses because you were either with a friend, or had your field settings higher than normal.

To get around it. You either need to seperate your bosses into a seperate group- or there's an option not to autospawn the boss. You can do either of those to place the bosses where you want without multiples.
  6. Well I have one. It's a romantic comedy and had planned on releasing it in Feb, but it's hard to sit on an arc for 2 months. It is also a SPOOF so please inform your group it isn't 'within the lore'.

Dating Ms. Liberty Isn't Easy ARC#464550

    Enjoy!
  7. Well- I18 was known as Shades of Grey. To me that means there was more focus on vigilante/rogue than actual good/evil or hero/villain if you will. To me a grey area (Shades of Grey) means the middle ground where good and evil are blurred.

This I think was the theme through the entire GR expansion. Praetoria just seemed like one big shade of grey to me. All the missions with choices seemed to have equally good/bad points morality wise.

    OMG lol

I had him save his costume and powers and go back to create it over thinking he was in such a rush he missed the Hero/Praetorian/Villain choice somehow....nope. He gets an error "you must first create a praetorian and complete the tutorial before making a hero/villain". WTF??

Most new players seem to have not a clue what Statesman, Lord Recluse, Emperor Cole, or Praetoria are, they want to play a superhero game. Why on Earth start them in Praetoria as a Praetorian, in neither City of Heroes or City of Villains, but City of Grey?? *and shiny. City of shiny Grey

Aside from them starting a....character in this alternate universe where they dont get to pick a side and see either of the main alignment zones (I planned on TPing my friend around to some of the nicest zones in coh to see) they also cant leave Praetoria(unless studio 55 changed this) until level 20. Trials can only level to 14...so they never see the "real game" before subscribing.

Praetoria is cool, but for existing players who have a basic knowledge of the lore and know what it is, throwing new people there by force with no information at all as to why they "cant be a hero or villain" is just dumb in my opinion.

And I get that the purpose is to make them play the tutorial, but why not any of the 3 tutorials? I made a praetorian and did the tutorial, and I remember the blueside being the most informative of all 3.

So I had my friend create his character with a name he didn't want to keep(which also screwed up his globalhandle), so he could finish the tutorial and logout and (hopefully, we haven't tried yet) re-roll it as a hero like we intended in the first place.

It's an obvious marketing ploy. Just think about the big picture here. The developers know that most players quit MMORPG's before hitting level 10, and/or before their trial has even expired. So they created this expansion with an obvious angle to entice new players.

Hate to say 'bait and switch' but... You know a duck is a duck. Think Age of Conan- superior level 1-20 experience followed by a completely different game. Good idea on paper but it never works out and is a good way to burn new customers.

Really it has ZERO to do with the story and EVERYTHING with wanting brand new players seeing their best work first, subscribe, then leave them scratching their heads in the end.

This expansion brought in some new blood. Myself in point. I started the day GR launched. Saw the ads, always wanted to try COH, etc... Started in Praetoria with minimal knowlege of the lore. Then I accidently left through the portal not knowing I wouldn't be able to return. So I was thrust into the real COH game not knowing wtf just happened.

Since then I've burned through pretty much everything. Even offset adventures such as badge hunting, base building, amassing influence, built a multi billion prestige base, published several AE stories. All of this since GR launched and I don't play 24 hours a day either.

Anyways. In short- it's just to force new players into seeing the better content first.

Your own desire to have the brand new thing on all your characters RIGHT NOW is making you run the same TF over and over.

The game is not going anywhere. The Incarnate system is not going anywhere. You are not going to lose the opportunity to do these things if you don't do them right this instant.

If you have 35 level 50 characters, well, I guess you're not getting the Notice on all of them this week, are you? Well, unless you have the time and desire to spend 35-70 hours running TFs this week.

TrueMetal has it right on one count: It's not a race. You aren't going to lose the game because you didn't get the new shiny as fast as someone else did.

The devs do not decide what I spend my time in the game doing, *I* decide that. I am content to run the WST at my own pace, when *I* feel like doing it. What I am NOT going to do is grind out the same TF repeatedly because I'm obsessed with having the new thing immediately, and then blaming the devs when I get burned out on it. They gave us the Notice, they aren't twisting our arms and telling us that we have to get it on all of our characters in the first week of it existing.

Again, the devs are NOT to blame for your compulsion to have everything on all your characters RIGHT NOW.
I never have run the TF's and never will. It isn't about needing something immediately. I'll never advance my character period if I am gated by a Task Force.

It's forced grouping cut and dry. Not a new concept in MMORPG's which have a playerbase to support it. Really reminds me of LOTRO's legendary item system. Yet even that was better implemented than this idea.

Right now it looks like they lifted the idea straght out of WOW's raid of the week concept. Once again, they have a large enough playerbase, and would never release major content patches without throwing soloers a bone.

What I'd really liked about CoH is that you were never forced to group to keep advancing. Now you are forced to group or you're done.

You keep speaking of basically making your own fun. Well some of us have even exhausted the 'making our own fun' concept. There's basically nothing left for me to do. I can't advance my incarnate characters and will never be able to advance them.

Does it really matter when we knew this was coming? Does that mean I should have cancelled earlier when I heard it was coming? Was really hoping some common sense would come into play- or the large amount of solo players would cause an outcry. Unfortunately not everyone uses the forums.

Might be a soloer but it doesn't mean that I don't talk to people, know people, or even have friends in this game- because I do. There's lots of people out there, just like me, who are die hard soloers.

So it isn't about OOO I gotta have a shiny right now der de derrrr. That's just ridiculous. I haven't had ANYTHING to do since they first released this incarnate system. Which kept me busy for around 2 weeks while I got multiple characters their Alpha's slotted. Since then I've just been playing other games and waiting for the upper incarnate tiers to open. They open and there is nothing for me. Not even a long drawn out option to do it solo.

If it took a hundred times more effort to do it solo that is FINE. There just needs to be an option for people like me so we have something to do. All of my 'make your own fun' options have been exhausted. There is no new content for me. By the looks of this system there never will be new content for me. I'll be stuck with my Alpha slot and be stuck forever. The characters I WANT to play and advance will collect dust on a shelf.

Cool man Whatever you guys want is the way it should be! Guess I should read better. Sorry Bubbawheat, didn't mean to jump the gun on you there.
  11. To make a good custom NPC it must be tested in my humble opinion. Even just changing one power can completely overpower/underpower a custom. Any EB/AV is generally a challenge just because they are at that rank. Really you just have to get out there and test it each time you change it and see what happened. Unless you are psychic
  12. This is pretty much it for me. CoX is a great game but I can only run so many tip missions and the like so many times. I'm bored and have nothing to do as a soloer. Unable to progress my main character any further there's just no real reason to stay subbed to this game.

People say- but but but there's stuff to do! Badge hunting, some badge hunting, or maybe you could badge hunt? Been there done that. Spent lots of time in AE and even there it's just making your own fun. When a game gets to the point where you as a player HAVE to make your own fun then something is wrong. The fun should be right there at your fingertips- not wtf am I going to do today...More tip missions? Sigh... Work on my multi billion prestige base? Done it, done it, done it.

I seriously think the developers are underestimating how large of the player base is soloers and small groups. When we can't progress our characters then it's done. Altitits only lasts for a spell then you hit the same wall. Just myself I have over 8 level 50 over 2 accounts... Really think I want to level another character when I can't fully enjoy the ones I already have?

To change the entire game direction at such a late stage... I just really don't get it Devs. Sometimes you must cut your own nose off despite your face to see reasoning. When subs start to suffer then 'hopefully' they'll start to understand. This sure as hell won't increase subs if that's the intention.

Bubba, there's no reason to make this complicated. If they want a theme that's cool and all. But it sort of defeats the purpose of taking off the previous rules. This way it's open to everyone without exception. Just hate to see people being excluded.
  14. He's said on Letterman that all this craziness was just for this movie. Jaquin went on Letterman earlier playing the role in the movie without Letterman's or anyone else's knowlege. They used over half of the Letterman interview as part of the movie.

If you've seen him lately he looks normal again. Hair's cut, face is shaved, nice suit. So it was all an act/publicity stunt for the movie.
  15. Here's a shot of Austin- the bridge designs and city layout remind me of Founders Falls.

  16. Well I guess I might as well enter my next entry to get the ball rolling!

My entry for Febuary will be 'The Vengeful Heart' ID#454861

This was my entry into the Dr. Aeon's 3rd challenge and I put lots of work into it. There were so many things I'd wished to do in this arc but had to compromise due to AE bugs. It wasn't even the original story I had in mind. But had to adhere what the challenge wanted which made it all feel forced.

That's some background on it, and I hope you guys get some enjoyment.

    Well that's good to know!

  18. Don't think that will work. Even $target I think just gives you your own name.

I used random bosses in my Dating Ms. Liberty arc on one mission. What I did was just be vague. Leave the dialogue non descript.

If you're talking about the compass - then sort of the same deal. Named the bosses Challenge #1, Challenge #2.

Thinking back I think it would have just been better to stick to one boss or creating a custom character for it. But i really liked the idea of the mission being different every time you played it.
  19. No, but that would be an awesome idea, lol. Probably would be too easily exploited though.
  20. I always thought Founders Falls had some striking similarities to Austin Texas. Even some of the names within the zone seem to have references to areas here in Austin. Might be all in my head, but if I'm not mistaken, part of COH development took place in Austin.

If PC is in Rhode Island that'd be kind of hilarious since they are usually excluded from CoX contests.
  21. Err maybe just pick up flight? Do people actually not choose flight? Outside of that... Most people just pop down an Ouro portal if they need to get somewhere really far. Of course there are exceptions I guess. Just find it hard to believe we have so many joggers.
  22. Grats Neb!

Thank you American Legion for doing this- and for all your consideration refining the rules to include everyone. That was very respectful and you guys are great!

Once you free them they pick up a rifle and assist your character in freeing the others; I only gave them a couple of powers, what a "normal" citizen would have using a regular rifle.

You won't find the arc as I keep it unpublished for it's not done and may never be done as I lost interest in AE.
You make no sense. How will someone know it is your character unless they even know you? If I used my main as a character in an arc- how could you tell the difference between a custom character I created out of the blue? Same thing.

Now my use of my characters is very discreet. You'd never know that was my main inserted into a crowd of other NPC's. But if someone has an entire story revolving around a main character and it happens to BE their main character. Then what exactly is the difference?
  24. I used it for some screenshots. That was useful and about the only time I ever used it besides accidently hitting it.
