Discussion: The 2010 Halloween Event is here!
But that doesn't have anything to do with my comment where I was unable to find any reference to Malleus Maleficarum in City of Heroes.
Appropriate. Kill some "real" digital witches in a make believe game, get a badge. The witches in this game are no more "real" than the witches in the Middle Ages. Only your feeling on the subject is different.

None of the Croatoa witch badges make any reference to real world mass murder - they stick with the idea of witches as fantasy things, and have suitable sounding titles to match.
A title like "Spellbreaker"/"Spellbroken"/"Disenchanted" would be fine for the Halloween witches because it'd fit with them being fantasy people that use magic.

Hmm... interesting, but I already knew about the Malleus Maleficarum. I did a search of that wiki page, and didn't see a single reference in there of City of Heroes.

If badge titles can't use outside references, then those ones must be in the game somewhere, right?

Basically they are upset over the Malleus Maleficarum, a codex on how to run witch trials. Since the media often protrays witches being only female, they are led to believe that the witch trials were only there to mass murder women.
Ignoring of course the whole element of the other gender that was also killed. Cause you know, no one cares about the men who where killed as well. The book after all does say that women are more often witches than men. Mostly because it came around in a time where men had thought they were the ones in charge. However now we live in a time where we get offended over everything because it has some connection to this one time that this thing happened that was bad. Thus is the major reason people are upset over the title of the badge and the way it is earned. So they want to sweep the bad part of history under the rug, even though several people here have now been educated on it. (Though everyone already "knows" at least a little bit about the witch trials.) |
I for one am offended by the title and I didn't say ANYTHING about gender. I'm perfectly aware of the nature of the Spanish Inquisition and who was killed by it.
HOWEVER, why don't you read that Wikipedia post that was linked. The book on witchhunting was specifically about hunting down female witches because of their sexual congress with the devil and original sin.
I won't object if the name of the badge is changed, but I also don't mind if it stays the same. I don't think that the badge being called "Malleus " is going to make anyone think it is OK to murder or even persecute women. Heck, 99% of the players here probably have no idea to what it refers.
Defeating witches is ok in the game, because they're real witches - but it's not ok when the badge for it is a reference to the murder of real people for being "witches".
|
On the other hand, I'm pretty sure I know some people who would object to the opinion that it's OK to portray real witches as villainous women who have to be defeated.

Ok... so doing the Halloween tip mission nets you a rare recipe? Ive done it twice and gotten two awesome procs
--Miracle: +Recovery
--Aegis: Psi Res/Mez protection
Is there a limit to how many times you can do it? I think its once per toon?

It's unlimited, as far as I know.

Unlimited on the same toon or is there a time? I ran the tip mission 3 times in a row and on the first character's run I got the Aegis unique but on its 2nd and 3rd run I didn't get the option for a rare recipe.
I ran the same mission again on a different character and after the 1st run I didn't get the option for a rare recipe.
I don't really want to farm rares for profit more than play one on each level 20 toon till I get things I can use for myself but it seems that after the 1st run you don't get the recipe

You're totally missing the point again - linking the murder of real people for being something they weren't to defeating in a game the things they were accused of being is totally the wrong thing to do.

I feel this badge title is entirely appropriate to the act being done, just as the other badge titles in this event are. Your apparent "outrage" will not change that. The only thing it will do will be to make you more upset and me more indifferent.

All the other Halloween badge titles are fine - their titles are all harmless pop culture references or general associations.
See if you can spot the one here that doesn't quite fit in with the tone of the others:
Defeating Vampires: "Hunter" - vampires and vampire hunters - a general association.
Defeating Ghosts: "Buster" - a reference to a comedy movie.
Defeating Werewolves: "Shifter" - werewolves are shape-shifters - a general association.
Defeating Zombies: "Dead Head" - a reference to the fans of the band called "The Grateful Dead".
Defeating Witches - "Malleus" - a reference to an instruction book from the middle ages for hunting "witches" that helped in the mass murder of thousands and thousands of women.
Or you could even compare them to the non-Halloween versions:
Defeating Vampyri: "The Slayer" - a TV show reference.
Defeating Ghosts: "Haunted" - a general association.
Defeating Warwolves: "Silver Bullet" - from folklore - a general association.
Defeating Witches - "Spellbinding" - witches and spells - a general association.
More pop culture references and general associations - including one for defeating witches that has an entirely appropriate title that doesn't references crimes against humanity.
There is totally no need at all to have the Halloween witch badge called "Malleus", and the devs really need to change it to something suitable that isn't sick and creepy - just like they managed to name every single other supernatural themed badge in the game without making them sick or creepy.

Can you explain how references to crimes against humanity can ever be "entirely appropriate" for badge titles?

Again though GG, you may as well drop this, you won't change my opinion on the matter. It bothers you, it doesn't bother me. You want the name changed, I don't think it is necessary. If anything it may be more important to keep the name to remind people of that atrocity as a way of trying to keep them a little more humble in the future.
Is Acantha on some sort of part time schedule? I'm pretty sure I'm in the right spot (at least according to ParagonWiki), but all I see is some fireflies. They're cool, but they won't take my salvage...
Edit: I went back into the game, and there she was. Not sure why she wasn't showing up before. |

Thanks for that link Nether. I am seriously thinking of buying it to use as a teaching tool for my children. Nothing like showing how dangerous a closed mind can be when it is given room to work.

Some interesting historical context there as well.

I do see the connection between the badge and the historical aspect but it's just a game and some people might be a bit too sensitive... Imagine CoX where beating 100 Marcone Mooks gives you the badge "Wifebeater" and you go on a wild Carnival of Shadows/Knives of Artemis killing spree!
I would then be offended...but referring to a 600-700 year old tome that used to direct historical directives on finding and dealing with witches ( Granted that the logic behind tome is as backwards wearing a hat on your feet)compared to "arresting" oddly colored Cabal members seems sinfully appropriate.
I present you with this:

You've totally missed the point again - the badge name is offensive because it's totally unsuitable for a game, especially a superhero one - it's being used in a approving way, which is totally wrong.

I noticed something odd just now. I have a toon that has an animated tail. Specifically the bioluminescent tail. When I use one of the ToT temp costume powers, the tail's still there.
It's actually kinda funny and a bit cute, but technically it's probably a bug. Anybody else notice this?

"You have blown this all out of proportion because it bothers YOU."
So... should we change the name of the badge "Hammer Down" as well?
Main Hero: Chad Gulzow-Man (Victory) 50, 1396 Badges
Main Villain: Evil Gulzow-Man (Victory) 50, 1193 Badges
