First Look at GL's Power Battery
Huh, and here I thought it'd mean, "Side Effects Include, Drowsyness, Dry Throat, Headache, and Possession by Fear-Parasite-Space-Bug".
I thought it said "If found return to Oa."
The first step in being sane is to admit that you are insane.
Is it wrong that all I can think of when I look at it is how to turn it into a base for a lamp?

Even though I'm a comic book enthusiast, I have come to accept that any comics remade into movies today will have an updated theme or costume or whatever. In the Iron Man movie, I think he was captured in Afghanistan by Taliban type dudes but in the comics (60s), it was the Vietnamese I believe.
This comic version of the Green Lantern came out during the 50s so I think people would be more displeased if the movie stuck with the original power battery design and it showed up as old fashioned camping lantern painted green. What do you think?

It looks the most like Kyle's battery.
I bet the writing around it will end up translating into the oath.

I really don't like it. I get the "updated for modern audiences" bit, really, like Tony Stark being captured in Afghanistan. It makes sense. But you don't need to mess with what works. There's nothing wrong with the power battery looking like a lantern. Where does the "Green Lantern" name come from if there is no lantern-esque symbols around? Why does the chest logo look like a lantern if there is no lantern? There's no need for something to look alien just for the sake of looking alien. Movies and comics should translate well to each other; meaning someone with no comic knowledge should be able to see the movie, get interested, and pick up a comic without wondering why they're nothing alike. I'm really hoping that this, and the suit, are "in transition" to the more common versions and the producers are just putting out these pics to surprise us with a fully comic-accurate movie. At this point, every bit of news I get about the GL movie disappoints me more.
Hollywood sucks.
They couldn't get it right if their lives depended on it.
Ignoring anyone is a mistake. You might miss something viral to your cause.
Well maybe this is Abin Sur's power battery and it'll eventually morph into something more "Earthy".

What i find funny is that you have people here that think it looks bad, when this is obviously made for a movie rather then the 2d block color of a comic book, where if they actually made everything look like the comic book we would be talking about how the costume was to spandex, and how the movie sold out to take advertising dollars from Coleman to have the battery still looking like their camping lanterns.
Guess im just one of those people that watch the old superman movies and think that the costum looks horrid on screen. Cant please everyone i guess.

But that doesn't mean this looks good. Nor does it mean that the one from the comics would look good either.
It means, simply, this lantern? Is ugly.

As classic as it is, the 50's lantern-style does not and would not make sense in an alien setting. The OP picture did disappoint intially but then I analysed why, and it was purely fanboy classic'ism and sticking with what i knew worked.
I think thats just a bad low-res picture of it, and all the green glow around the rim is probably just light-effects, glows and reflections in flux.
Looking at the other picture and the huge lantern prop behind Ryan on stage, i realised it was not the modernist shape of the lantern which caused my initial concern - but the apparent texture of it in the first picture which makes it look more bio-organic than it probably is.
The fanboy backlash is because bio-organic is cliche' for a sci-fi style, has been for a while after all the aliens & species knock-off movies.
I just can't believe that people are letting this ruin their view of the movie already. Makes no sense to me.
I agree, fanboy concern can get a bit carried away sometimes.
I myself have been wrong so many times about concept or production art and then when the movie came out it looked perfectly fine in context with the rest of the movie.
Star Trek XI is one of my favourite films at the mo. I can't believe there was so much uproar about hotrodding those warp nacelles - they look fine to me in the film.
Okay, I saw this yesterday. Since I'm uniquely qualified to comment on this, I will.
"Me no likey."
It's not the shape, per se, though I think it's a little goosenecked for my taste. No, it's too busy. Unneccesarily so. Someone upthread said they liked the oversized prop better than the one for the film...and I have to agree.
So no...don't like the power battery, but that's not going to keep me from seeing the movie.

I'm not letting it ruin the movie for me. I'm still going to see the movie. I hope I'm wrong and it actually looks good on screen and in motion...
I'm just saying, I think it sucks and doesn't bode well for the artistic direction the movie is taking. You can make things look alien without making them organic and Alien™. It really shows the art departments lack of creativity. It actually reminds me of Special FX in the movie Spawn. You remember that? It had a very gritty look to it. At least then it made sense because... well... It's friggen Spawn.
I tell you what, though... I can overlook all this if they manage to animate the rings constructs decently.
