It depends on the situation. If your battling an AV with have AoE cones that slap the crap out of you, stay at range. On the other hand if your doing more normal stuff blapp like crazy

Like Mike says...depends upon your situation..now if said AV is being aggroed by a tank and his back is to you...well..kidney punch the bastich...

To me, my blaps cover AR's inherent lack of Single target damage.

I have enough recharge now that I can make an attack chain of Energy Punch, Bone Smasher, and Total focus.

My assault rifle still cuts down the massive ammounts of minions with ease, but for that last boss remaining, I blap that sucker down.

Not sure if anyone else experiences this, but it seems holds are used a lot less in melee range. If I'm hanging on the fringe, there always seems to be some sort of mez being thrown my way. Get up close and personal and they pull out the damage. So considering my only real weakness is mez resistance, wouldn't it make sense to go where the mez is less?

Also I love doing superspeed drive byes with thunderstrike. And heaven forbid a boss get's knocked down by it. He'll find himself tesla caged+shocking grasp jacked before he regains his feet. Then.... it' fisty time.

I blap 'cause my sonic/fire AoE blapper is the most fun toon I have, not to mention the only one i've ever seen in-game. With something around 30% melee defense, it's all kaboom, nearly all the time!

i play a (low lvl) energy blaster for both p and s and my only secondary atm is an energy punsh that sends enemies flying and i only use it for the funnies of sending people flying. its quite entertaining, so for that you could probably say im a blapper. but i only do it because its funny and currently its one of the very few powers i have.

My Elec/Elec used to tick off this tank I used to run with..

Him: Dude stop doing that !!!!

Me: What ????

Him: Running over here and finishing off my guy in two punches when I been punching him for like half an hour

Me: We aint got time for you to whittle down the mob.. Your the tank !!! You make the team go.. when you slow down we all slow down... just go aggro the next mob so I can drain them...

Him: Ok.... ( bounds off to next mob )

Me: Short Circuit. Power Sink, Aim Build Up, Ball Lightning Thunderstrike...

Him: Come on man.. leave me Something !!!!

ha ha ha

My short-lived fire/elec (deleting 'cuz I hate the noise for the damage aura) took the first /elec melee attack because it did huge damage compared to my other ST powers at that level, and was really handy. I'm rerolling fire/ice, we'll see how similar it is.

I also sorta dislike the appearance of the aura. While I quite liked a lot of the /ice stuff.

Now it's just a matter of figuring out whether to blap in /ice; I don't know whether those melee powers are good damage. I guess I'll find out.

Ah, well... for the aura you could use this slash command. I use it all the time

Planning a Sonic/EM Blapper right now, anyone have experience with this combination?

I would not recommend it. You only get 3 melee damage attacks to begin with. Frozen Fists is atrocious, and Freezing Touch is a great hold but deals minimal damage. That leaves you with Ice Sword, which is the only solid attack of the bunch. Oh, and with Chilling Embrace you can hog attention from a lower level tank, not something you really want to do as a blaster.

IMO, Ice Manipulation is much more suited for ranged combat. Set up Ice Patch at a choke point/corner, launch Shiver, and you'll kill everything before it has a chance to get in melee range.

As for my on topic comment... I'm not a blapper. Few of my blasters actually take the melee attacks, and those that do usually only use them to finish off the one or two bad guys that actually got within melee range without dying. It's a matter of choice really. I prefer to shoot from a distance, but I can think of plenty of character concepts that would involve killing a few enemies from a distance, then rushing in to pummel the rest.

@Winter. Because I'm Winter. Period.
I am a blaster first, and an alt-oholic second.

EDIT: Didn't read all of the thread before I replied. This was pretty much covered. My bad

Just answerign your original question....my fave toon is an NRG/Fire blaster (I know, I know...). At 50 and slotted out she blaps like no one's business. Here's an example.

Drop [Fire Ring] on the toughest guy in a mob, charge in with [Hot Feet] going, drop [Burn] and watch everything start to die. [Fire Sword Circle] picks up stragglers.

My snipe has been called a 'blue side AS'.

Why am I a blapper? Because when I blap, everything dies quickly and horribly. Only on Master runs do I resort to traditional blasterism.
