  1. We've got 3 nVidia machines here, and 2 of the 3 have shown this issue. The 9800GT and GTX 260 machines both have had the flickering. The GTX 285 machine has not had this. All 3 are Win 7 and none have had their drivers updated outside of the Windows update.

The odd thing with ours is it seems to happen most often after doing a lot of alt+tabbing. We played last night with no flickering on either of the machines in about 3 hours after they had both had the symptoms previously. No repair, no update of drivers - nothing.

I'm lost on this one as I can't repeat the symptoms at all.

Thank you! I wouldn't think there would be an issue with using a secure browser...

FF3.5, FF5, both IE9 32 and 64-bit, and even tried on android 2.2. Is it safe to assume all the codes are gone?

Otherwise, 560 Ti, 570 and 580 are a good nvidia choices. (or heck 560 if you can get it really cheap)
The 460 is about on par with the 285, both usually benching between 5% of each other going either way. It would be a waste of money to side grade.

    OPENGL issue?

I found an interesting issue with OpenGL games with nVidia cards (all I own). Go into your nVidia control panel, manage 3D settings, and go into your global settings. 9th option down is "Multi-display/mixed-GPU acceleration" and it's default is multiple monitors. Switch it to single monitor and see if that helps. I had problems with a couple OpenGL games crashing out on my XP system until I switched this setting, at which point all crashing stopped.

I have no idea why this works, but it has helped on more than one machine I've seen crashing OpenGL apps. If you had already made this change, then I really have no other info.
  7. Very fun. This weekend I tied the knot with a woman I met in this game 6 years ago. We didn't do anything in-game to commemorate it, but we did have friends fly in and our entire wedding party was made of people that played the game. We celebrated by spending the night playing Rock Band along with various other things.

Reading this did make me wonder, though. Has anyone looked into how steady relationships made in virtual environments are? Of course I would like to think they would be more steady as most gamers have more than a few things in common.
  8. Not sure if anyone else experiences this, but it seems holds are used a lot less in melee range. If I'm hanging on the fringe, there always seems to be some sort of mez being thrown my way. Get up close and personal and they pull out the damage. So considering my only real weakness is mez resistance, wouldn't it make sense to go where the mez is less?
  9. I have to wonder about some of the responses so far. Where are they spending most their time?

Indoor missions I can crank everything to the max and hold 60fps no problem.

Step out into grandville, praetoria, or faultline and watch the fps barely hit the 20's if I'm lucky.

Turning world detail down to 100%, AA to 4X, AF 16x, and keeping AO pretty low and shadows just about minimum will keep me in the 45-60fps range in the above outdoor areas most the time, but still dip into the 20's-30's depending on where I'm standing.

    6GB Corsair 1066 DDR2 (running 1001MHz)
GTX 285 oc'd to eVGA SSC settings

Looking forward to building a new rig once Sandy Bridge gets released.

I was having the same problem a while back, you can use EVGA Precision with CoH, however, if you are editting your settings at the same time it is running your game or system will freeze/crash as you've noticed. Turn off EVGA precision before starting CoH, change your settings, and then you can turn it on. You should be able to find other posts in the CoH or EVGA forums related to this problem. If you want to OC, you can use a program such as Rivatuner, it works without a problem while in CoH. So just try not using EVGA Precision and see what happens. Good Luck!
    +1

The two programs do not play friendly with each other. My reliability monitor on win 7 says I have the least reliable machine on the planet due to the crashes involved with these two programs hating each other.
  11. about the only option you have is keep complaining to the devs to update the game to play nice with the current generation OS. CoH is the only game that does this that I play.
  12. Yeah, that's about my only gripe with this game. For the visual quality level, hardware gets taxed far harder than any other, much higher visual quality game I play.

I will say that my vid card rarely gets 100% usage in the game since the coding doesn't take full advantage of said hardware, nor does it max my CPU due to quad core, but there's relatively few games on the market that are that multi-threaded at this point.

To the OP - until you can find what actual fan is spinning up, not much can be done. I purposely ramp up my vid card to about 65% fan speed and have my case fans/CPU fan ramp up on their own. With 4 120mm fans, 2 140mm fans, and a triple 40mm setup on my ram, I rarely if ever hear any fan other than that of my GPU.

You could also use whatever hardware monitoring software came with your mainboard and see which fan is ramping up, and maybe change it's settings (At full blast, I only allow my fans 10.0V as I'm never hot enough to need them at 100%).
  13. Ah, you're using compatibility mode and switching it back to XP compatibility. Gotcha now. I was thinking you were doing something with 7 specifically. Blond moment is all.
  14. This is a known Win 7 problem - been that way since 7 came out (technically, since Win7 was available to the public in Beta, but I had hoped it would be fixed before it went RTM). Both my 7 machines do this.

What I'm wanting to know - what service packs are you guys talking about??? Service pack 1 hasn't been released for 7, yet you're talking about SP 2 and 3?
  15. I've been working on finding decent settings. My issue is getting the NV control panel to remember game specific settings rather than having to set everything via global settings. For the life of me I can't get triple buffering to work reliably, so I'm stuck woth the 60fps -> 30fps issue and I want to make sure my settings work WITH vsync on.

100C is *hot*. I wonder if the fan on the card is broken in some way?
Air and case constrictions make a huge fluctuation in card temps. Before my current 285 I had the gtx 260 216sp. In my case, it idles about 40*C and never went above 70-75*C in game. I put the card in my gf's case, and idle temps went up to 45*C and load temps from 80-85*C. I have a CM 690 with over a half dozen 120mm+ name brand fans, she has an "i-don't-know-but-it's-shiny" case (I had to let her pick her own or I wouldn't hear the end of it) with a single 120 front, 120 rear, and 80mm side panel fan.

I would say play the game with your side panel off with a small fan blowing into the case. If your temps drop without using Precision, then you have a case airflow problem.

EDIT: And just to add with the precision thing: Letting the stock fan profile do it's thing, games on the 285 would push card temps to 85-90*C. By setting it to 65% fan I get a small amount more fan noise (not noticeable with a game running) and temps stay in the 70*C range. Pushing the fan to 100% would only give me a 2-3% decrease in temps, for a huge increase in noise. Seems these fans are optimized for lower than full speed.
  17. You running windowed is the difference. If you run full (which I do) then it will cause issues with the game. Most recently with v1.9.5. I installed 1.9.6 last night so I haven't tried it, but considering the patch notes I doubt that anything changed. I have watched the in-game numbers enough now that I start it, load my game profile, then close it. Profile stays up, but no issues with CoH that way.
  18. have you used msi afterburner or evga precision to crank the fan to see if that helps the temps? I manually turn my fan to 65% for games on my 285 as that speed is still relatively quiet and drops temps by close to 20*C.

note that evga precision doesn't play nice with CoH, and needs to be closed before exiting the game, or the game will hang.
  19. I just closed the updated and tried again - no issue second try.
  20. the odd thing is that it's only select MS mice with Vista/7. I use an ancient MS optical wheel mouse (circa 1999) and when I moved to Win 7, I had no issue with the scrolling. My girlfriend has a newer MS mouse (purchased last year comfort mouse 3000?) and when switching from XP to 7 she inherited this problem.

It's starting to be a little too obvious that CoH was built for XP and there hasn't been any real QoL corrections for making it play better with newer OS's. The lack of the updater to open any browser other than IE (which can be removed, making the links dead), the inability to tab out of game without having to alt tab the game twice to re-enter it, the switching 7 back to basic instead of aero, and this mouse issue. All little things, but they add up.
  21. So did this work for you? I'm certain this was the cause of my lock ups. I've also noted that I could not change graphics settings in game while precision was running without locking up.
  22. Curious, are you using evga precision while in game? I've been having this issue lately. Found out (literally about 5 minutes ago) that the game will not close out when precision is still running. Closing precision before closing the game allowed it to exit normally.
  23. I'm guessing it has to be the OpenGL implementations. I ran benchmarks on the 197 drivers, then the 257 drivers on some of my more intensive DX-based games, and saw no real improvements on my GTX285.

People with GTX 4XX cards are seeing some real nice improvements, but that is expected considering the drivers are maturing for those cards. Any other cards I fully expect every ounce of performance to have been eeked out of the drivers years ago considering how long they have been out.

Didn't realize they had those two so far different in clocks at first. Yes - that is a better choice between the two with very little difference in price.

It's a shame the 2009 series cards went so high in price with the EOL thing. I got my gtx 260 216sp off the Egg 7 months ago for $5.00 more than what you're getting the 250 for. Best bang for the buck I had seen as that same card is now near $200.

At this point you've got yourself a pretty decent budget build. Won't be easy getting much faster without spending a lot more money.
