The Sesame Street clip that's too hot for television (Yes, really.)

Well I remember when I stumbled across Danny DeVito on SS. This was a few years after his Taxi days, I think he was trying to out grouch Oscar.

Phew!!

I thought it was going to be the one with Jack Black in DJ Lances orange jumpsuit. That was a sight to put me off my cornflakes.

The Ting Tings have been my 3 year olds favourite band for over a year now, and we still haven't managed to catch the Yo Gabba Gabba with them on it yet in the mornings.

Well I don't have any particular favoritism for Katy Perry in particular. I don't own any version of her music, not sure I've seen any of her other music videos and really don't know much about what she's done to become "famous" in the first place. As I said before she probably would've been better off in this Sesame Street appearance dressed a wee bit more conservatively to avoid all this "censorship" silliness. Regardless I still think it was a misguided move to cut this video for reasons I've already given.

Having said all that I wanted to address this idea of whether or not a person's "professional background" disqualifies them from ever appearing on Sesame Street in the first place. Obviously there are people out there who are so controversial that they would never be considered. I intrinsically trust the people who work on Sesame Street to have enough good judgment to keep those people off the list.

But if the people Marcian Tobay listed managed to appear on the show already (the likes of Cheech Marin and Gene Simmons?) I hardly think Perry could be much worse what little I know of her. The idea that a performer who's normally more "adult/mature" oriented could never switch gears and handle an appearance on a show designed for kids is a tad bit narrow-minded all things considered.

I think it's kind of sad to think Perry might actually be mainly famous for "wearing cupcake bras with cherries for nipples" in her videos. If that's her claim to fame (again because I don't really know) then that'd be a little pathetic. But clearly the folks at Sesame Street didn't think she was a "naughty" enough person to preclude her from even showing up to tape this video with Emo to begin with. As was pointed out Perry's outfit here is not really any worse than Tinkerbell's. Was it really provocative enough to be censored, really?

It's too bad Sesame Street supposedly caved to outside pressure to cut this video from their show. Obviously it's their call to run their show the way they see fit. I just think this act of censorship is going to ultimately cause them far more trouble than it was worth in the long run.

This is all you need to know She was a nobody Christian singer(let that sink in) and then got lucky to stumble into people who know how to package her in a mass appeal kind of way. She is more of a studio creation than Britney. Kathy Perry singing live is outright painful to listen to. Even as much as I think Taylor Swift sort of, but not really sings, Kathy Perry is just...no.

Yeah but they put Leslie Hall on there....Granted I think she is brilliant but I need brain bleach every time I see one of her videos.

She hosted the Teen Choice Awards, appeared on Nickelodeon...

..and despite the California Gurls video (which is more silly sexual than raw sexual), I don't think she is overtly sexual, any more so than Britney and Christina were. I don't recall any uproar over live performances where she gyrated inappropriately, had salicious dance moves, etc.

Yes, her breakthrough song was "I Kissed A Girl," but I think she comes across winking in her sexuality, in that it is much more of a "Teehee, I am so innocent and I don't know what I am doing."

Or, she is like Lady Gaga in her sexuality, in that I don't think we are meant to take it seriously. She isn't early Madonna, trying to shock people.

Dangit, I'm going to have to watch that Katy Perry video at some point, aren't I? I've almost made a career out of avoiding it...
In all fairness, I'm probably not the most objective opinion here. Never really been a fan of Perry's "work".

As for the list... I honestly just scanned over it in about 5 minutes. Some of those people I don't even know who they are... Gene Simmons is probably the most damning of the people on the list. I don't know how I skipped over that name...

Anyway, the argument that people who are worse than Perry getting through is valid. Obviously the show doesn't discriminate so much based on history. Granted, I haven't seen their segments either...and can't accurately judge their.. uuhh... position on the awkward meter.

Gene Simmons?! Okay, so I'm out of the loop as to who's been on Sesame Street.

Still, Perry goes wherever her label/management shoves her.

How do you even get on Sesame Street, anyway? Do they ask you? Or do you approach them?

Tales of Judgment. Also here, instead of that other place.

That was kind of the point of my last post earlier today: Apparently a person's background doesn't really have to be totally "kid oriented" or even "kid friendly" to appear on Sesame Street. Clearly they've tried to pick all sorts of people over the years based on the show's core idea that diversity is a good thing to cultivate.

Sure Perry might have made a better wardrobe choice, but beyond that she's not totally "inappropriate" for Sesame Street. In this case she's a young pop-starlet singing a vapid happy-shiny pop song on a kid's show with a puppet. It's not like we have to take -any- of it all that seriously. I could easily envision millions of people LESS appropriate than she would have been even in her apparently titillating Tinkerbell dress. *shrugs*

True. I mean, it's not like it's Jenna Jameson or Ron Jeremy we're talkin about here.

I really want to see Ron Jeremy make a completely innocent appearance on Sesame Street now.

So, Katy Perry responded by appearing on Saturday Night Live in an extremely sexy Emo themed shirt.
