Sexism (not as bas as it sounds, promise)
A wise man once said, "If I'm going to spend 4 hours watching someone's butt running, it may as well be a girl's"
Last time I did a survey, I was close to even. But I have to say I'll tend to make female for one reason - and no, it's not the "watching someone's butt" bit (pixels don't do it for me, sorry.) Unless you get the sliders just right, male characters seem to run like they've got cement shoes or something. It's just very clumsy and irritating looking. Ninja Run helps this, as do travel powers, but.... oy, it's just distractingly bad.
I tend to make mainly female characters...
Partly because the butt watching, but also the fact that the males do run a bit wierd...
And also I think of more female costume designs that I like, where as males I usually only find one every now and then (For a specific character though...)
I seem to have many more females than males in the concept stages, but that gap closes quickly when you look at the post 25 game.
As a male i seem to have more male toons- shock horror i know. but i do have a few female toons tho ^^. lol, tho it does depend on name n theme
yer u'd think- well yer name would make it either male or female- good example- a toon of mine is called "Classic Hero" started of male but after using a KoV cossie on it i was thinking- hmm cos its katana/regen as well it feels better female. so it changed lol
99% of my characters are female. The only male characters I have are by concept.
Gorden Freeman, for example, is a guy.
PPD Shell is another guy, because the costume power stays male gender.
Shadow.Knight (not to be confused with my other Shadow - Knight) is guy just cause.
And while I could make Iron Breaker a female dwarf... I'd rather not.

Number of levelling characters (Not RP NPC's)
Female: 17
Male: 17
Most Popular Female Character AT: Mastermind (5)
Most Popular Male Character AT: Scrapper (6)
Least Popular Female Character AT: Defender + Controller (1 each)
Least Popular Male Character AT: Defender, Corruptor, + Controller (1 of each)
I'm not sure if it's gender bias in the most popular AT's or not. A fair few are female as it's simply what the character calls for, especially in the case of my Mercs/Storms MM, Gail's Force. The pun, the wordplay!
Sorta-kinda on topic:
I'm a fairly social roleplayer, and I have interacted with a large number of players in a number of groups I've been in. The number of these players that were actually female surprised me when I first started the game - I used to think that women would never bother with video games, and have since been proven wrong. The player gender split in my group has been roughly 50/50 over time, with maybe slightly more males than females. The group has had around 20 or so active people at any given time, with some leaving and others being recruited.
I've noticed a trend* with regard to character gender over the years.
Male players will go all over the place. Some of them make mostly male characters, some make both, and some populate their character stables with females. It's not that unusual for a guy to play only girls, in my experience. Female players seem a bit more rigid. I find that they're more likely to stay within their gender, with one or two token males if they've been playing the game long enough. Obviously, there are exceptions. I'm friends with one woman whose main characters are male (though she does play both genders). But I find it more unusual and unique to meet women who play male characters than vice versa. I find it especially rare to meet females who play only males.
Anyway, the result of this is that while the group as a whole has a fairly even gender split, the characters made by this group don't share the same split. There are way more female characters than male characters.
I am a male player. I play a mix, but trend toward female characters. I've got around 30 characters at current, and the mix is 50/50. But the characters that actually get played, loved, and recognized by others in the group are more often female - I'd say probably 75% of my 50s are female.
* 'Trend' is based entirely on anecdotal evidence, which is not really evidence at all. I could be completely wrong.
The Ballad of Iron Percy
I probably start roughly equal amounts of male and female characters, but for some reason*, despite the fact that I'm a bloke, nearly all the characters I stick with are female. I've only got one male character, my Fire/Fire tanker, over level 30.
*I suspect it's because, although I'm not really a roleplayer, I do think of male characters, in any RPG, as me, and I have real trouble playing them if I can't picture myself in that position. Now, obviously I don't have the ability to protect myself with fire while igniting others, but if I had superpowers, then that's the kind of thing I'd like to see myself having. For a non-CoX example, I've never been able to get anywhere as a male character in Mass Effect, mainly cos I just cannot picture myself as a soldier.
On the other hand, my female characters are just that, characters. I can disassociate myself from them much easier for obvious reasons, so I can play characters that are just fun rather than ones that are me.
All of my characters are female. I like the idea of female superheroes or supervillians or superpratorians kicking butt. I also believe there is more in the costume creator for females. I have made a male toon or two in the past and I just didn't connect with him. Plus I am a female and I wish I had superpowers, but because I don't, I live through this game vicareisly (think I misspelled it but you all get the drift.)

Cheers for the replies. I forgot to mention in the opening post that I'm Male. I do roll a lot of female heroes, they just don't get played very often and the males time to 50 is much shorter from date rolled.
I have 2 accounts, first one is all females,2nd account is all males. The first account of course, has most of the costume codes and highest for Veteran Rewards. 2nd account,no costume codes, about 9 months behind VR's. I tend to use the first account for farming, etc. More characters on first account vs. 2nd account but neither is capped on server slots yet on my home server.
Yea,I think I'm biased,against the 2nd account.
(Oops, forgot to add as well,I'm male too.)
[Beta Testers]Zombie Man: Harlot is Swan's nickname too. And Dominatrix. And Sister Psyche. And Mynx. And Bobcat. And Synapse.
The above is only my opinion, please don't hate me for it

GhostRaptor: Server populations have been trending upwards since Issue 13 release. There are no current plans for any server mergers and we're looking forward to Issue 14 and the rest of the year.
I don't play female toons at all. I am male, and I like the RP immersion of this game. I just can't get that with a female character.
Also, I tend to spend all of my time with camera angles, and walking when I attempt to make a female character.
My wife is the same way, when she does play, she only plays female characters.

My Portfolio
I've eight males, eight females, and two genderless beings that take on a male 'shape'. I tend to prefer making female characters. Partly because I greatly prefer their costume creator, and party because when I'm dressing a female character, it feels more like 'dressing them up'. I can make them look 'better' and show a little skin; a bit of female leg or cleavage tends to look better than a mans. I can pick between different styles of shoes. Thigh high boots? Stillettos?
When making male characters, it tends to feel more like I'm designing a uniform. Superman, spiderman, that kind of thing. Men have also got less to show off, tend to be covered from the neck down, and have flat shoes. I've got a couple of males with bare chests and black patterns to simulate 'with skin' options, but it isn't anywhere near as useful as the female one.
Overall, I think it's a combination of having a somewhat effeminate mind, and having more options in the female costume creator. Females aren't my 'type', so it isn't that I like staring at their butts as they move between missions. But because I can clothe that butt up in such a way that it looks great with that particular cutting of skirt and those heels.

Yeah, so i RP all of my characters and can't seem to get into character on female characters...so all but one of mine are male. :/
There are no words for what this community, and the friends I have made here mean to me. Please know that I care for all of you, yes, even you. If you Twitter, I'm MrThan. If you're Unleashed, I'm dumps. I'll try and get registered on the Titan Forums as well. Peace, and thanks for the best nine years anyone could ever ask for.
I started with mostly rolling guys, and then there was a recent avalanche of concepts that just worked with female chars.
Rolling a few more guys again now, though. It honestly comes down to which suits the concept best
And nothing to do with females and spandex. Nope. Especially not Widows >_> *cough*
GG, I would tell you that "I am killing you with my mind", but I couldn't find an emoticon to properly express my sentiment.

I'm male, and all of my toons are male (except the Widow but I barely ever play her).
I just think the female running animation is dumb as all hell.
Heh, come to think of it, the only toons I have that are not Males (or Huge) are robots, and even those use the Male template. Might be interesting to turn an existing concept Female, kind of like Starbuck on BSG
I've discovered when it comes to playing CoX I'm a bit sexist. I am half working on leveling 1 of each AT to 50 Blue Side while playing whatever I feel like with other toons. Of the 5 mains of each AT I have 2 at 50; Scrapper and Blaster, 2 in the 40's; Troller and Fender; and a tank in the 30's. However, 4 of them are male toons. Only the tank is a female.
I've rolled other female toons and enjoy them but they tend to languish around the 20-30, with only the Fire/Fire blaster getting any love and she was a reroll of my first tank (fire/fire, didn't enjoy it, but liked the back story) and my second toon.
But here's the other side of the story... I have 5 villians and they are all female except for the SoA I rolled. They aren't as high yet, but I enjoy playing them.
Praetoria seems to be breaking my pattern as while I rolled a female Stalker she is taking the warden's path.
So, does anyone else notice a gender bias in their toons?
