What happened to the disable in-game ads option?

Not sure when this happened but i no longer see the option to disable in-game ads. Do game ads still exist, still optional or they just moved the option elsewhere?

There hasn't been any for a while, so no need to have the option.

This game had ads?

Last i heard they had a couple but i've always had it disabled since implementation.

The double fusion folder is still there but only has the generic placeholders so not sure if real ads still exist but the tech still does so i would think the option should also be there.

But eh...if they don't have ad sponsors anymore guess it doesn't matter.

It would disable ads, if they had any to display, which they don't, not for a long time now.

Another "feature" rotting on the refuse pile of "heh, lets try this, it'll be neat".

Let's not forget the huge screaming hordes...well, throngs, at least...okay, the isolated and somewhat small group of self-righteously indignant and morally superior former players who LOUDLY ragequit over being forced to endure advertising in a game they were paying for! Those threads were epic lulz.

I can remember two different ads, and the type of products advertised, but the names of both escape me, even though I never disabled the billboards. Obviously, I never bought either product, so if I'm any sort of example, no wonder they stopped running those ads.

Wasn't one of them for sneakers...Jitter I thought.

Probably wrong on that one. I thought it was an interesting idea and as long as it wasn't screaming out at you...what is the big deal.

At one point one of the community people, both of whom are gone now so no idea if this will ever happen, said that SGs would be able to run ads using this system.

My guess is that's unlikely to happen either, but you can always PM someone and ask.

I remember those threads with people screaming about how horrible it was that we were getting in game ads. Just like the ones where people screamed about having their characters show up on the City Vault. I hope those people all feel silly now, they certainly should.

Oh and since we're talking about failed ideas, anyone know if they're still playing with the CoH/V MySpace page?

I thought this was a good idea by the CoH team. Ads to generate revenue are were subtle in game. I am working on the assumption any additional revenue would go towards improving the actual game.

I am a bit surprised at how many people were offended by this. To improve the product they had to look at a real ad and not a pretend one. No problem here and I am not sure why others were upset over this. Very common these days but ah well. Who knows what actually happened to the ad system.

That was my look on it too.

As long as the ads fit the setting of the game, I'm all for it.

Hell, if given the opportunity I'd totally play a character like Captain Amazing. Especially if being a sponsor ***** got me free gametime

Yeah exactly! I get a bit annoyed at all these people screaming about no ads and then whine about the crap costume pieces we get for free and then have to pay for the ok ones in booster packs. Just a possible situation where ads could have meant savings for the players. Some people just have no clue

I was fine with the ads, and kind of disappointed at how this little project of theirs failed.

Though, I'm more of a fan of CoH actually getting it's name out there and partnering with other companies to generate revenue and get more players as opposed to being blasted with advertisements, but hey, can't be worse than watching tv and going through several commercials every twelve minutes, right?

I used to have a screenshot of the Tony Hawk SideKick but I must've deleted it.

Not 100% sure they always did. There were posts somewhere about there being bright clean show posters in Boomtown amongst the rubble. If they fitted the game style I'd be OK with it, but that would Jar.

Morally superior?

This^^^ was what bothered me. Those ruined city maps that the Freakshow love? They were all over those. Just everywhere. The implementation was really just...sub-par.

There are no words for what this community, and the friends I have made here mean to me. Please know that I care for all of you, yes, even you. If you Twitter, I'm MrThan. If you're Unleashed, I'm dumps. I'll try and get registered on the Titan Forums as well. Peace, and thanks for the best nine years anyone could ever ask for.

I wasn't saying they were, I was just saying that if the ads fit context, I'm okay with them.

Honestly, I think this is partially where the program went wrong from a consumer opinion standpoint. It's likely the advertising companies weren't okay with having the ads damaged and aged and showing up as old blown out billboards if the team that did the final drafts even considered that idea. If I remember right, the companies would submit a few ad ideas, the team approves or denies them and implements them in game.

Add that to a lack of diversity in the ad art and just too few advertisers jockeying for ad space, and you have a failed program.

It's sad because there are just some minor changes to the implementation that would have been needed and they would have been a success.

None of us would know, PM a community rep.

Then again, I was apparently a member of the inferior, immoral, unwashed heathen rabble who didn't immediately rise up and revolt at our horrific mistreatment at the hands of the devs, so what do I know? Besides, if I'd sell out for ephemeral promises of "better stuff" there's no telling what I'd do for, say, a free month of play and free stuff! (Oh, wait, I ran out and bought the GR Complete Collection. The horror! The horror!)

A lot of you still remember the ads, so they worked in terms of reinforcing those brands. Although, they probably didn't convert to sales.

For some reason, I made it a point to remember what they were at the time. They didn't convert to sales in my case because the products advertised were overpriced crap.

Marketing, most likely, and at NCSoft, not Paragon.

I don't think Nike Jumpman shoes are really targeted at the same demographic as MMOs are...
