Heroic Masterminds?
What racism would you be talking about? Never seen any from the Chapman clan.

Any MM theme could easily be good or bad, especially since the idea of being good or bad is relative.
Some examples
Undead heroes - The Crow
Demon heroes - Ghost Rider
Thug heroes - Sons of Anarchy
Robot heroes - The Vision
Merc heroes - The A Team
Ninja heroes - The American Ninja
I can't think of any theme really that couldn't be made into a hero or a villian with a little imagination.
The way my heroic Demons MM plays is as a spellcaster who prefers to have a wall of meat between her and danger. Demons are a pretty reliable resource and if one dies it wont be a tragedy. Also, it provides her with a good gauge of her skill because, well, many infernal creatures -hate- being controlled and fight hard not to be so.
She also sees throwing magic at foes as a crude way to manipulate magical energy.
Skipped most of the thread, so don't know if it was thrown out there, but:
They don't have to be actual robots, thugs, undead, etc. They can simply be illusions or beings made of magic created to look like those things.

Introducing Charlene White, demons/dark mastermind. She's a hero. She's a resistance warden, completely skipping all the crusader arcs. She's forthright and honest and saves the innocent. She's going blue side, where she'll do heroic tips and heroic morality missions.
Because she is sick of the bad rap demons get. She is sick of superstition, fear, and bigotry, and wants people to know that demons can be reliable, trustworthy, allies.
The only possible reason for anyone to worry about this is this odd detail... Why is her background "natural"? Who can naturally summon demons, anyway?
Not a comic, but back in the 90's there was a series of books called Necroscope. One of the main characters, Harry (the titular "Necroscope"), was a guy who could talk to the dead. The dead were so happy to have someone to speak to and loved Harry so much that they would rise from the grave to assist him if he was threatened or needed their help.
Such a concept could be adapted to a heroic zombie mastermind.
Wouldn't Fat Albert be an example of a good thugs mastermind, granted... if one starred on a Saturday morning cartoon show?
A necromancer can be heroic easily. Sure, you once raised some zombies and they follow you around. Well, you didn't mean to and now they're here you might as well make some good come out of it, it's what they'd have wanted in life.
My own heroic Demon/Thermal mm, isn't calling demons from what ever place bad people go to. No they are manifestations of her inner personal demons. Just being directed at evil.
Possible side affects? Well, will have to see.
I can't remember the spell's name, but I know there's a D&D spell somewhere for use in Good alignment necromancy. You summon the spirit of the person to inhabit the corpse for a time to help right a wrong and help them find peace afterwards.

It is by caffeine alone that I set my mind in motion. It is by the beans of Java that thoughts acquire speed, the hands acquire shaking, the shaking becomes a warning. It is by caffeine alone that I set my mind in motion.
My Demon Mastermind is a Demon Rancher. On Praetoria, for generations, her clan have been raising demons to sell Demon Meat, Demon Blood and even Demon Milk to those that have use of it. After the Hami Wars and Cole cleaning up, there hasn't been much use for Demon pieces, so the daughter headed out to the big city with a herd of Demon "cattle" to try to make a buck. She isn't evil, just an innocent, proud Praetorian trying to save the family from bankruptcy.
After Praetoria (Lvl 18 now), She will be a bluesider. She's a loyalist, but not too thrill with what's up now that she understands how things work within Cole's empire.

And yes just a week ago I created "Miriam the Medium" on Liberty. She's a medium who can give the dead physical form (using ectoplasm). Zombies/Thermal looks kind of cool especially with spectral green flames.
My level 50 Dominators:
Madame Mindbender 50 Mind/Energy
Fly Agaric 50 Plant/Thorn
Nate Nitro 50 Fire/Psi
I made a pretty corny Mercs/Dark MM with a heroic feel.
His name is Major Incantation, and his basic rundown is he found a mystic tome on a routine recon mission that empowered him and his team of elite soldiers.
Soldiers:
Pvt. Pentagram
Lt. Leyline
Cpl. Corporeal
SpecOps:
Specialist Samhain (it's not pronounced 'sam-hane', it's "sawin'")
Sgt. Seance
Commando:
Col. Cauldron
I'm enjoying the play so far.

Didn't Spawn get Demonic Powers and he used them for good?
P.S. Dont judge a book by its cover. Just because they are monsters doesnt mean they are bad. Ever See "Monsters vs. Aliens"? ...lol

When I think of good thugs, what jumps to mind right away are the gang members who fought vampires in the Buffy spinoff Angel. Before he went to work for Angel, their leader was a guy named Charles Gunn. So I'd consider him a heroic Thug Mastermind -- actually probably started as a vigilante and went hero, but whatever...

My Robotics MM dates back to the first days of CoV, and I always saw him as a person who was trapped by circumstances on the Rogue Islands, and forced to do questionable things to survive there. Nevertheless, he was never evil per-se.
And, much as Celestia said a page ago, one way to also explain the Robotic MM hero (as my character did) is as a Technology Controller, able to control computers and hi-tech equipment. In fact, the Technology Controller concept is more acceptable to me, as this implies the ability to manipulate the basic forces of the universe, something that explains how Robotic MMs can generate/summon mechanical troops in any location...they just build them on the spot out of the matter on hand.
Heroic Demon Summoning MMs probably only work if the idea is that the Hero is a reluctant summoner who somehow can't get away from their power. Likely, the person made a bad decision early in their lives, and now they walk a fine line trying to use the Demons they summon to help find a way to break whatever gave them that power without being in turn used or corrupted by those same Demons.
Zombies are a definite challenge, but it's possible that the undead are those of the victims of Paragon's crimewaves who the Heroes -didn't- arrive in time to save, or passed by because more important tasks called to them (how many high-level characters pass over a COT ceremony in King's Row without a glance?), and have been given the chance to exact revenge upon the same criminals who killed them by the Mastermind. These undead are the vengeful undead, seeking retribution for their deaths, and the Mastermind is the source of their ability to return to the world of the Living.
The rest all depend on the motivations of the minions in following the MM, but there are countless tales of Mercs, Ninja, and Thugs who had a heart of gold, and strove to do the right thing (even though their preferred methods included knocking heads together....kinda like some Heroes we know....).
My own two cents.
Those who think Truth is relative haven't had a Tank land on their car.
Are these demons using the definition that a demon is an angel who is down on their luck?
Could always go the route that I think one version of DnD uses, Animate Dead doesn't raise the dead but summons them from an alternate dimension of dead people. Odd, but somehow it works.

Cutest necromancer ever.
Or the zombies could just be reanimated corpses without a soul or mind in them. That's how the Necro/Pain I'm taking through Praetoria does it, anyway.
Birth of a Villain Group (Arc ID 60573): Designed for villains level 1 - 10. Found a villainous organization on Mercy Island. Find a base, recruit some minions, gather valuable equipment, and destroy your enemies!

Not any better. That's still desecration of a corpse, imo.

Isn't it kind of tacky to call them demons? The preferred term is Infernal-Americans.
'Lo, there do I see my father.
'Lo, there do I see my mother, and my sisters, and my brothers.
'Lo, there do I see the line of my people, back to the beginning.
'Lo, they do call to me.
They bid me take my place among them.
