They're dumb.
No, really, Shadow Fall is freaking awesome. If you're not leading a hostage/rescuee to the door, there is no reason not to use it. If you're leading a hostage/rescuee, it interferes. It also makes people's costumes grungy and their toons translucent, which may be a legitimate complaint but IMO Shadow Fall is more awesome than their toons' costumes.

It's generally the look. I'd never ask anyone to turn it off in a fight, but it's got an annoying look when you're not and it's not necessary. I generally only turn it on for battle.

It doe smake tanks have to try a little bit harder to ensure he gets all the agro at the start of a fight for about 0.000000001 seconds, for a good tank.
Its an awesome power, and should only be turned off if you intend to be near the hostage or more accurately, the person the hostage is following.
It also has its uses for hostage stealing, if some gimp on your team is being dumb.

The problem with Shadow Fall are 1) Idiot team mates, 2) Idiot NPCs and 3) Idiots in Rikti Events. Only one of three is important.
1) I run Shadow Fall perma when I'm in a mission and travelling around. Great stealth and nice bonuses to resistance (and a little def). No reason for it to be off in a mission unless ...
2) Some NPCs escort hostages can't see through it and need it turned off so you can get the dumb rear to the objective.
3) I have been whined at to turn it off during Rikti Events because "It prevents heavies". This is nonsense and why I keep this post bookmarked.

One thing I have noticed with SF and Steamy Mist is if your gfx card is struggling it can cause a little lag. Personally I always turn the number of particles down from 50k to 10k. Not sure if that's relevent but I like it.

If you have to deal with a hostage, turn it off. Other than that, go nuts. (And as for #3, I found that just funny the last time someone whined about that. "Shadow fall prevents heavies!" "No, it doesn't," (provided dev info.) "They're wrong. We won't get any heavies because of him!"
And when the heavies came up?
"Hey, guess what I'm still running."
Be sure not to click any glowies in the TV respec, either.

The only time my Darky turns off Shadow Fall is if there's already a huge abundance of defensive buffs going on in the team.. In which case it's just draining my End for little return.

Shadow Fall prevents you from escorting hostages, that's the only time during the mission where you should turn it off (and I'm willing to bet those are the only situations where people have asked you to turn it off)

Yeah, it's not the nicest looking power in the world.
It can be laggy at times, even at 100 particle count. Yes, I often play at 100 particle count and it can be frustrating. That said, if we're fighting anything that it gives me that nice +Res to I just deal with the drop in FPS.
And yes, turn off your annoying toggles (AND AUTOS) in WW and the Black Market, please. And if you're a Mastermind - do you REALLY need to have your pets right next to you blocking the person for everyone else?
It's your game, if you like it leave it on. You don't pay for the game AND the subscription just so some random noob can tell you how/when to use your powers.

And even still, there's nothing wrong with saying people should be considerate enough to avoid screwing other people over (they paid for the game and subscription fee, after all, if they want to use it to implore others to reduce lag, that's their prerogative).

I recently took Shadow Fall on my dark/dark defender. However, the few times I've used it on teams, the team has asked me to turn it off.
Why don't teams like Shadow Fall?
