Blizzard to remove the veil of anonymity
You talking about "sweeping generalizations" is hypocritical to begin with, given that you yourself just said you made sweeping generalizations about CoH players on their forums.
But you're just astroturfing for the game, so whatever. |
I said that someone else said something like that on WoW's forum. I argued with that person over there just as I'm arguing with you over here, because you're both full of ****.

There's plenty of useful discussion on the forum, and the majority of posters are not trolls. The trolls are just the loudest and insufficiently moderated.
|
And if the anti-trolling argument doesn't hold water, then what is the real benefit to this policy? My hypothesis is that Activision Blizzard has big plans for its Real ID feature, and they will be for the benefit of the corporation, not the players.
Astroturfing? Really? KM is one of our older posters, and despite her occasionally becoming rather obtuse regarding certain topics, she's part of our twisted little family. If anything, she'd be astroturfing for us over on their forums. Honestly, let's at least accuse her of bad things she's actually guilty of. Like making up blatant falsehoods regarding the WoW community (which is less a community and more the MMO equivalent of whatever 4chan has going on).
|
All the more reason to deem this broad policy excessive. Why should all the WoW forum posters surrender their online privacy because of a few malcontents?

Activision is 200% evil. Hence me buying Prototype pre-owned because I didn't want them to have my money but Prototype is the only game they've made since M:UA that I've had an overwhelming desire to own. War for Cybertron looks good, but I can live without it (or find that used, too).
|
This compelled me to look up "astroturfing". I would now agree that the accusation is false.
|
And I even appreciate MoMC's backhanded endorsement.

You may disagree with how Blizzard's handling this, hell, I'm not even sure it's the best solution myself, but they apparently are getting enough feedback from people canceling their accounts about their forums that they feel the need to do *something* about it, even if it's a controversial something.
If there wasn't a problem, Blizzard would follow the status quo.

Soooooo the solution is to have MORE players cancel their accounts over fears of invasion of privacy or worse?
Today, and my MMO group represents a very slim majority, three people I know not only canceled their accounts over THIS, but removed the game from their computers. One went so far as to sell all their equipment and give the money away to their guild.
People play MMO's to escape and be someone they are not. Unveiling who they are [Can't believe I'm quoting my brother here] is in effect creating a mini example of the "Civil War." Having an identity to escape behind (in most cases this is a good thing) is something people need.
Then there are those that have used these games as a stepping stones to launch themselves into real, growing, friendships. It may seem odd, but MMO's offer those too timid for real world socialization to actual build social skills which some even try out in the real world. Heck, my guild leader and his now Wife, met playing WoW. Both admitted how shy they were to start. Before I got bored and left, they had left WoW for Real Life. We even threw them a Going Away party. Without the veil of anonimity they might never have taken those initial baby steps.

In fact, I would compare Blizzard's actions in this situation to using dynamite to kill a fly. Sure, you'll kill the fly, but you'll blow out a significant portion of your house.

I've participated in some 20 MMOs over the years starting in Meridian 59 and DAoC.
I have found that most MMO forumites are pretty much the same.
The trolls have varied wildly, however.

I think population size has a big impact on trolls - not just the number, but how they can bounce off each other and set new bars for crappy behavior.

In order to prove that they had faith in the system, Blizzard posted the name of one of their GMs. Micah Whipple.
To clarify, they posted the name of someone whose job is to be the messenger that says "We are consciously denying you your hobby into which you've invested hundreds of hours".
In order to prove that they don't have faith in the system, players are posting a vast amount of Micah's personal details. Seem's Micah uses social networking sites. A lot. Enough that pictures of his house are being posted online, who he lives with, his ex's, his phone number...
... you get the idea.
Hey, wanna see where a GM lives?
I post this not because I think it's funny, but because I want to drive home what a terrible and dangerous idea this is.
Oh, I see the point they're making but I wish they wouldn't do it like that.

I don't see what the big deal is. So WoW is gonna be like facebook? Big Whoop.
I can see why they want to do this, but not really sure if it's a good idea. The only thing I can get is that only first and last name will be displayed on the forums. Don't see any mention of the location or personal info of a player being available to other forum users.

EDIT: nice of blizz to toss one of their workers under the bus there. gimmie the name of the executive that thought this was a solution and then we can talk. Theya re making atari look like pr wizzes here. just read the thread, the dangers have been described many times in this thread. and they aint pretty.
The difference is, you generally don't have to worry quite as much about some psycho on Facebook finding your house and setting fire to your car because you beat him in a Loot roll for the Epic Pants of Snogging. In WoW, it's a distinct possibility. And as other people have pointed out, repeatedly, there are issues for female gamers and under-age players. (The first security tip on kid-friendly sites like Wizard101 is "Never share your account info" followed closely by "never share your real name.") And there are players, such as myself, who do not chose to share real life info with people we do not, in fact, know in real life. In point of fact, I don't use Facebook either, and never will. *Edit* I have a number of reasons why I don't want to divulge my name, address, gender, favorite color, and whatever else to anyone who wanders by. If I know you well enough to wish to share such info with you, then I've already told it to you. If you don't already know it, then it's none of your d*** business.

www.pipl.com was linked on the WoW boards. Scary stuff. It has my new cell phone number who very few people have, as well as my entire family, and tons of other scary info, all from just my first and last name. Satellite photos of me working in backyard last summer. I'm freaked.
EDIT: Lordy. I hadn't seen you can search by screen name too. Thankfully my screen name is a little more unique, and none of the stuff that did actually connect with me was interesting at least.
Will this kill WoW? I doubt it. We're going to see a continued existence of non-sanctioned forums for WoW players. And I'm sure that, much like this game, a good portion of the playerbase doesn't even use the forums anyways.
Will this kill the official WoW forums? Most likely. |
If you make posting on the official forums unfeasible for information-gathering purposes (say, build advice), or for expressing opinions without getting drowned out, then people are likely to start posting in other forums what they would have posted on the official ones.
This results in exposure for the game, even if negative; other people see the game being talked about, get curious, and maybe get curious enough to try it out. (See our STO thread for examples.)
Of course, this doesn't always work, as forumless Tabula Rasa showed. (I think it was Tabula Rasa that CuppaJo got assigned to? Could have been Auto Assault.)
