Character Movement.

I got an interesting Neg rep in another thread where I mentioned that I use the arrow keys to move my characters. Clearly I'm too old fashioned... dunno... As the neg repper didn't leave their name I can't ask how THEY move their character but I'm curious how other players nagivate around the world.

Me, I have my left hand activating powers and tab selecting targets, and my right hand on the arrow keys for movement.

And yes, I fully expect the generous neg repper to leave me another one.

There are some numpties out there!

Me I use the arrow keys as well - mainly because Im left handed and have a lot of stuff set up quite differently. I, like you, use my left hand for tabbing and my main attacks and have the second tray set to my numpad for support powers and if I have them a self heal set to numpad 1 or 0 as I can hit them quickly with my little finger while moving about.

If your mouse has greater processing power than your gfx card, the answer is yes.

I use the right mouse button to steer/move my camera. It has much faster response and better accuracy than using the arrows would, plus allows me to look up or down quickly as well. It's especially usefully for those tunnel maps where the path actually goes uphill and there are foes on it that you wouldn't have seen if your camera was still level.

I use WASD for forward, back, and sidestepping. Spacebar is jump, and X is down (while flying).

I have 2 thumb buttons on my mouse. I use one to toggle Ninja run on/off, the other is Jump (same as spacebar)

How do you activate powers? With the left?

I can understand the response time, but I never liked the old shooters with mouse look. I have Q and E bound to look up and down.

I still use a few of the numbers for some common powers too, but I click on the others to use them.

TAB I changed to TargetNear
Q is my TargetNext
E is Follow

I have a bunch of other complex binds set up, but I wont get into that here. lol

Yeah, I change TAB too. Out of curiosity... is the mouse look on movement, or if you click a button and move? I'm assuming the latter?

Holding the right mouse button down is what activates the mouselook. I believe there are ways to toggle mouselook on and off without holding it down, but that would annoy me as I move my cursor around the screen. lol

Clicking both mouse buttons is the same as Forward (I disabled the autorun), and since I have a jump key on my mouse as well, it leaves my left hand completely free to press power binds on the keyboard if I wanted to... or to chat with the team while traveling through a zone... if you can type decently with one hand. Then again, I can't type with two, but people still understand me. lol

I like to actually use my UI. I like to mouse hover (I reduced tooltip delay to make this faster) over the target window to see exact HP remaining on a target sometimes, and I use the team window to select teammates... among other things.

Only until you get used to it. But if you don't like mouselook in general, then it's not something you'd even want to try. Me, I love mouselook, so I adjusted to it from day one and changed my other binds accordingly, and added a bunch of other stuff to make things easier as well.

If I want to jump up onto a thin power line and SuperSpeed across it.. I can. I don't think I could do the same using the arrows... lol
That's just one example of why I think it's better. It's speed and precision lets me go anywhere I want to very quickly and easily.

As for how it might affect fighting and using powers.. anybody who knows how to use the power queue mechanism is limited by the powers' recharge and activation times anyway, so neither method can really be any faster in that regard.

When all is said, it really just boils down to personal preference. That's why we have the ability to change our binds anyway. You should not have been -repped for it, and you'll get +rep from me.

...I had no idea this was an option. That delay bugs the hell out of me. Thanks!!

Back on topic - I too use the mouse a lot. Right button to move the camera, and left to select powers from the tray - I don't use any hotkeys for that.

I also use the arrows, with left and right to strafe, and Delete to jump. Right Ctrl and Right Shift are bound to next enemy and next friend. Those binds are all hangovers from my many years attempting to blow the heads off fellow UT/Quake players.

Menu > Options > General > Miscellaneous > ToolTip Delay
I think I have mine set at about 10% or so.

Alternately:
/optionset ToolTipDelaySec 0.10

That is of course provided you have Tool Tips turned on.
That option is right above the delay slider, or:
/optionset UseToolTips 1

I use the arrows for most movement, unless I'm flying, in which case I use the mouse to steer with autorun on.

I have my powers set up with my most commonly used ones in tray 1, set up in the order of my attack chain. Heals, Build Up, less commonly used powers go in tray 2, which I access by hitting Alt+Number. The seldom used powers (Rest, Mish TP, Mystic Fortune, etc.) I have in tray 3, and I click on them.

I've set it up so it's very intuitive for me. I enjoy PvP, and have noticed that I seem to have a very slight reaction time advantage over people who click on their powers (I've dueled my wife a few times, she uses the mouse for everything)

There's no right or wrong way to play the game. However the controls feel best to you is the right way for YOU to play the game. Just ignore anyone who says you're doing it wrong.

My left hand uses tab, space, and W (and occasionally S). I also use it to activate all attacks in spots 1-6 (and use CTRL and ALT for trays 2 and 3).

My right hand uses the mouse, left finger to click and select, right finger held down to move right or left, and scroll wheel for camera distance.

All the powers I don't use very often end up shoved over on the right in numbers 7-0 and in their corresponding ALT+ CTRL keys. (Things like the O-portal, jump pack, team recall, etc...)

I use WASD for movement, TAB and CTRL-TAB for targeting, mouse for direction, view and powers. Almost everyone I know shakes their head at me...

That's what I do as well. I use the number keys for my main attack chain, and everything else (toggles, o-portal, et. al.) I just click with the mouse.

My style is pretty much the same as most of you.
I use the mouse to control the camera and my steering, while still using the mouse to click powers in my tray.

I use WASD for movement and my ring finger gets much use on the tab. R is set to select next friend.
I only use the #keys to activate powers if I'm using the mouse to look around at the moment. Space is jump blah blah, I've got my costume binds set to O,P,[,] and my emotes and misc binds are on the numpad.

I use the keyboard with my left hand and mouse with the right.

My left hand is resting on WASD for forward/backward movement and strafing, I use Q and E for sharp turns left and right and mouse look (righ mouse button) for precision turning. Jump is bound to SPACE while hover down is bound to SHIFT.

I cycle through targets with the default bind on TAB and select specific mobs with the mouse. F follows the selected target, G selects the nearest target and follows it. V is autorun, R toggles Sprint, Z chugs blue insps and X chugs green ones.

I activate all in-combat powers by the number keys and most of the powers are spread over two tabs, the "primary" ones in the first tab that's activated with the numbers and the "secondary" ones in the second that's activated with ALT+numbers. "Primary" and "secondary" varies through characters, but ST attacks are always "primary" and AoE attacks are mostly "secondary", as well as stuff like BU, click-heals etc. Powers with longer recharge that are used in fights are at the start of tray 3 which is activated by CTRL+numbers, such as clicky mez protection and Hasten. The toggles are at the end of tray 3 and I activate them with the mouse. Rest is always on the last slot of tray 2, and I have Sprint on the last slot of tray 3 so I see if it's active or not.

I also have a few binds on the mouse. SHIFT+middleclick toggles between Ninja Run and Combat Jumping and SHIFT+rightclick activates the power on the last slot of the first bar, into which I either put Super Speed on toons that have it or a macro that toggles between Fly/Hover and SJ/CJ if the toon has those (in that case the travel power is on the slot next to the macro while Hover/CJ is with the toggles in tray 3 so I see which of them is active). SHIFT+leftclick teleports me to the clicked location if the toon has Teleport or Shadow Step and ALT+rightclick toggles any stealth power the character may have (except Hide which can get really messy if toggled off accidentally).

If the character requires additional binds, I put a macro into the first slot of tray 2 (so it's activated by ALT-1) that opens up a PopMenu with the desired options, such as kheldian form shifting and DP ammo selection.

wasdeq for movement. Mouse for everything else. Have macro's for handy keys like target closest/next and follow. Works well for my mm's as well.

This is my first, and only mmo, and it is just how I naturally developed my playstyle. I agree it is possibly not the most efficient, and I could relearn, but after 6 years playing, its just how I normally sit down at the computer.

Big reason why I got used to using the mouse for everything, was the camera would never remember where it was at after zoning, would drive me nuts.

wasdeq and f to move/follow although I flipped A & Q and D & E to match a game I had previously (so the strafing is Q&E). I mapped the middle mouse button for look/steer because I found right-click in the middle of combat tended to pull up menus instead of steering like I wanted. One advantage is that a turn is much faster if you use both the turn key and the mouse. I can make myself dizzy looking around lol.

90% of the time I use the mouse to activate powers but I do have the most important stuff arranged in the first tray so that the number keys can be used in an emergency. Tab is normal targeting but I have the back-tic key (just above Tab) set to Target Nearest and it gets a lot of use. I almost never target by mouse-click, at least not in the middle of combat, I'm too uncoordinated for that.

WASD, mouse for camera control (My girlfriend yells at me for being able to split-second 180 and jump over her mid-fight), space to jump, X to fly down.

I use shift to toggle SS on any speed characters, and have a bind file set up to toggle between travel powers on an auxiliary mouse button.

That is to say, button4, depending on character, either goes

Hover->Fly->Sprint (loops)
CJ->Super Jump (loops)
Sprint->CJ->Ninja Run (loops)
Aid Self or Ice Slick or other Targeted AOE.

Wow, I thought I was going to read that you guys do what I do. I guess not.

All movement is mouselook, straife, and W or S. And during fights a judicious use of F.

` or ~ if you want to call it that, is target nearest. All toggles are on numpad, attacks are 1 through zero, and underused stuff [sometimes toggles] are on the third tray.

I might move with the arrows if I'm eating.

I tried moving with a mouseclick (if that's what you're saying). Absolutely hated it. Felt like I had no control of my movement at all.

WASD for movement, space to jump, right-click-hold for mouselook (Q&E are turning also but I almost never use them). Tilde (~) is follow, tab and mouse thumb button are targetnear (even my ranged characters play in melee so I generally don't care about dudes on the outlying edges), ctrl+tab is targetnext, mouse pinky button is "targetcustomnext friend", f is to switch on/off my travel powers/sprint, ctrl+f is "/search" and shift+f is turning off all movement toggles.

I use the keyboard for all my attacks, etc, except stuff that's off in the extra trays they gave us (mostly porters and long-recharge accolades and stuff). Main attacks/buffs/etc in 1-0, secondary attacks/buffs/etc in alt+1-0, toggles/self buffs/etc in ctrl+1-0.

Screenie of my UI, even though I've slightly updated it since then so some stuff is different.

I use the same general keyboard, mouse set-up for all my characters. In general it breaks down to the following catagories.

Movement: wasd and Mouse Look
Targeting: Mouse Buttons 4 and 5, G (target_custom_next alive for glowies)
Powers (combat, attack): TILDE through 7, T,Y,and U
Powers (combat, defensive): C, V, B, N
Powers (movement related): Z, SHIFT+Z, CTRL+Z, ALT+Z
Powers (ally buff, or MM commands): NUMPAD(all), SHIFT+NUMPAD(all), CTRL+NUMPAD(all)
Debugging: SHIFT+N (netgraph), SHIFT+F (show_fps), SHIFT+. (where_am_i), SHIFT+/ (loc)

Unmentioned keys retain their usual function.
