Why?

Just curious why is the vast majority of people in the Pocket D, hatefilled spewing on about people's race sexual preference you name it. For this being a supposed roleplaying community this shocks me. Or is there better place find like minded individuals? If so point me to this place.

All I can say is look at your last thread. There have been plenty of good suggestions on things to do different and alternate avenues for good RP that you can pursue.

Hopefully, you find something to your liking soon. Whatever the case, though, good luck on your search.

To better help your request, please define "like minded individuals".
Because if you are going to be as vague as "not rascist sexist homophobes", then you're going to get a vague answer like "everywhere else".

Your last thread got deleted. That pretty much sums up the issue.

I'm curious. Who do you play?

Now I'm certain we aren't playing the same game.

There are no words for what this community, and the friends I have made here mean to me. Please know that I care for all of you, yes, even you. If you Twitter, I'm MrThan. If you're Unleashed, I'm dumps. I'll try and get registered on the Titan Forums as well. Peace, and thanks for the best nine years anyone could ever ask for.

Unfortunately in the world today I don't think you can come anywhere near narrowing this down to just Pocket D.

Dumb thread is dumb.

OP obviously has to learn the hard way.

For the record, the OP has a point. Pocket D tends to be full of cliques...and these cliques can at times be quite rude to "outside" people. Then there are the times I've seen someone ask a question in broadcast and get slammed with rude and insulting commments. Now I'm not saying it happens all the time, but it does happen often enough to be noticeable.

Of course.. then there are those people who actually get mad at others for speaking OOC in the D...deny it all day..but I've seen it happen. These people tend to be quite rude. Lets not even bring up the rude and sometimes insulting comments I've seen in the forums. My point is this...most of the Virtue community can be quite nice most of the time...but on occassion it can also be full of ******** and *******. Getting defensive and calling the OP stupid, or saying other rude comments simply because you don't see what he's talking about, are part of what he's talking about, or just don't care...well that only adds fuel to the fire and further proves him right about Virtue.

I fully understand the idea of the internet being a place were alot of people go /just/ because they can be rude, insulting, whatever without consequences, but must /we/ do so? Ok.. so the guy ran into a few ********/*******..I know I have..tell the guy to suck it up and move on, but is there really a need to insult em, or tell him he's wrong? Especially since he's right about everything he said.

He does have a point. Many of the people did tell him to suck it up and move on. It seems the moderators didn't see much point in that thread besides a blunt rant, so it got deleted. Then the OP started this one.

That's when we started taking the OP much less seriously.

As for whether or not the OP is "right or wrong", I don't know. All I know is that I've been avoiding Pocket D as of late for similar reasons, and I occasionally drop in with a bucket of popcorn just to watch the usual troll-fest in Pocket D broadcast. Sometimes I get THAT bored!

Lmao..but um.. for someone that admits to avoiding Pocket D for the same reasons the OP stated...isn't that pretty much saying you think he's right? So why not just say..he's right instead of... "As for whether or not the OP is "right or wrong", I don't know."? Just wondering, not tryng to start anything.

His premises and excuses are valid. His conclusions and reactions aren't. In my humble opinion.

Insulting everyone and everything, flaming and ranting in the forums, and reacting with potential anger isn't the solution to the problem the OP and many others are experience. In fact, it's exactly what's fueling it. Jerks eventually get tired of being jerks if they realize no one takes them seriously as jerks.

Such is being human, and there are no rules for that. We take examples of how to assess and resolve a situation from our peer groups and mentors who must do the same with those who do the same, ad infinitum.

Unfortunately, there is no universal rule that behaviours A, B, C, D and E are unacceptable while Z, Y, X, W, and V are acceptable. Instead, what we have are unwritten codes of conduct within certain peer groups / cliques / tribes.

I feel that the best thing we can do to make it easier for everyone involved is to simply emulate Bright Shadow's behaviour, here: Understand and offer guidance; otherwise it may be best to simply observe or ignore.

My only suggestion is to avoid the people that are annoying you in the first place. (Or just turn broadcast off or to a different chat of its own.) Pocket D is visited by a vast amount of friendly role players who enjoy the company of others, even if their characters have conflicting views.

The way to attract the role play you want is to do such role play yourself and it will attract the wanted role play you are interested in. The social skills it requires might not be easy for everyone, but it is skills needed non the less for the positive interactions to come about.

Do I get annoyed by people talking out of character without brackets or some other method of showing they are talking out of character, yes. Very easily so, but I try not to be rude about it, letting them know what is up. Usually it is no big deal and people move on.

But there seems to be an increase of non-role players that are aggressive and right out rude to role players and their requests. In turn, a lot of players have become more defensive because of it. Even to minor things that could be passed off. Which in turn fuels the negative spin some non-role players have on the role playing. (Ironic, since they are flying around as super heroes in the first place.) Certain players are just trying to preserve the role playing haven that is Virtue that they have come to love.

Because snark passes for RP if you lack imagination.

It's always easier to cut people down than to be generous in conversation :P

I know what you mean.

So... just throwing this out there, pretty divorced from the situation myself because I've not been to the Pocket D for a while, but...

Is it possible that the people are roleplaying hate-filled bigots? I mean, the old "I'm roleplaying a jerk so don't treat me like a jerk" excuse is old and tired, but some people roleplay jerks expecting to be treated, ICly, as jerks because antagonists make good RP experiences.

Honestly, Pocket D seems to fluctuate on the time of day. It can be filled with idiots or filled with the most mature, amazing people ever. Generalizations of the D used to make me mad, because a lot of people say 'It's evil, and has bad RPers or sex in every corner' and I'm like 'what?' I had a large discussion with several people and, eventually, found out the reason. The day. The times I RP in the day are not the times MOST people that make these complaints about the RP, whether because they can't or refuse to. Virtue is a generally good community, it has some hate, as any society. But, depending on the Time of Day, it can mutate into a riverflow of lava or a light stream you can casually float down, just check out different times and see when you are comfortable with the people. All I can suggest.

With love,
Me! <3

I don't think the issue is the RP. It's more about behaviour of the players, not their characters. I'm all too familiar with the whole "My character is a jerk, doesn't mean I am!" mentality, as I used to play such a character. It's not about that either. But yes, you're right. The general atmosphere of Pocket D as a virtual gathering spot for like-minded players depends heavily on the time of day. Sadly, a lot of people can only play there at the "bad hours", whatever your definition of "bad" is. For me, I think it becomes a lot more tolerable late at nights.

Honestly though, I think part of the reason is that it's summer and schools are out. Just give it a few months. Take that as you wish!

I know what you mean.
My challenge is actually passing for realism- I actually tend to be very snarky, but I'm not a rude jackass, ie many characters in the D, and so my main tends to be similar.

Ice/Ice Blaster. Dedication to concept is an ugly thing.
Claws/WP Brute. Sex without the angst.
Every CoX character lies somewhere on this spectrum.

I'm talking about the players, more than the characters. Some characters are bad, but some players are intolerable.

I play Inquisitor Tyrus as on overbearing, overzealous mouthpiece for Recluse, but I always OOCly apologise for being an oaf. I feel that may be one of the secrets to successful (or at least OOC Friendly) bad guy RP. :3

Like you said, this is the internet. People will act humongous massive douches here for no apparent reason other than to stroke their own self perceived superiority and to feed their ego complexes.

As for the cliques? I say this; Show me a place where there are no cliques, no "exclusive groups", and no "special clubs" and you will have shown me a place where there are no humans.

This is quite simply a human phenomenon. Humans do this, it's rather typical of the majority of them ( Ah, yeah. Caught you, notice how I said majority, back you little harpers. I'm not generalizing. ) - Every game I've ever played that had other people playing it as well be it Neverwinter Nights 2, World of Warcraft, Second Life, Star Wars: Galaxies, EverQuest or anything else has always had cliques. They come with the territory the same as arseholes on the internet come with.. Well, being on the internet. As I've said before and will say many more times, people ( This caliber of punk specifically ) suddenly finds themselves with much more courage with the anonymity of the internet on their sides than they would face-to-face in the real world. The simple fact is that they don't have to fear repercussions here.. It's a sad fact, but I mean.. People will be people..

Let it bother you and you've already lost. You can speak out against it and at least try to educate others on it and try to make your opinion and outlook on the subject and situation known in the hopes that maybe your words will reach another and be of help.. But frankly, most of the time your words will fall on deaf ears, it will be a waste of time, and ultimately in most cases you'll be flamed for daring to oppose the status quo. If you wish to do this, by all means, but don't let it bother you. As I said, the second you let it bother you and the second you let yourself get angry over it is the second you've lost. You cease to offer anything productive and everything just kind of devolves itself into another random and pointless flame war.

I also have a particularly unpleasant villainous character that makes me fall into the "I'm RPing a jerk, I'm not one in real life honest" camp, and I've found a few things that really help in playing smoothly.
Firstly, only unleash their worst excesses with groups of people that know you and know it's just the character from other characters you've played not being like that, or who know you OOC.
Secondly, if you suspect people are becoming uncomfortable with your character, send them a tell or OOC message confirming that they're okay with this stuff, that it's just IC and none of it is meant OOC.
And thirdly, be prepared to lose sometimes. People love to beat the bad guy.
