While others have mentioned teams and the Trinity mentality, I will add that... just have fun!

You can make a team of all blasters/tanks/defenders/etc and smash through missions/Task Forces and all.

Lol Newby is friendlier...

Okay no addons...nice... This means I dont have to worry about another player having a leg up on me due to just having a better UI/addons... Already enjoying this game...

I would like to add that the Ultra Settings are awesome, and the game has a real comic feel to it... I also love the idea of not having to LOOT everything I kill..Nice change of MMO pace.....

Once again thanks for all the help, I will be purchasing the full game tonight once I get home and put the kids to bed...Looking forward to it...You guys made my decision easier...

You know what won me over day 1 all those years ago? No corpse runs. I had grown to hate that in EverQuest. Not having to loot dropped enemies was #2.

I'd say the part I bolded isn't even that necessary...

In most cases when you level up, as long as you say "ooh, that looks fun" on power picks, and "this power needs a little more kick" on slot assignments, you should be fine (tip; brawl sprint and rest almost never require slots. Unless for lulz). And if you enjoy min/maxing builds, there's probably guides to help you get started with that, too.

Oh yes this is true...The dreaded corpse run..It is not missed..Do you lose anything when you do die, or just go to the hospital?

You get a small amount of easily worked off XP debt after level 10 for being defeated. Half your xp goes to paying off the debt till its gone.

You just go to the hospital or choose to go to your supergroup base if it has a med (forgetting the name now). Except for a couple enemy maps where you get beamed into jail cells and have to bust out.

We do get debt which is negligible beginning at level 10. It gets paid off at a 50/50 rate by taking 50% of your earned experience and paying off debt with it but patrol xp absorbs it and removes it while you are logged out.

Now 6 years ago my blaster was in almost a complete state of perma debt. That was bad. There was no patrol xp, debt cap was much higher, started at level 5. Now I barely notice the debt and if I do have any when I logout it is gone when I log back in thanks to patrol xp.

One last thing and I will stop pestering...

Flying...Is it the best and only other form of travel outside of on foot and can anyone obtain it?

Posted

Anyone can take Flight as a power pool. I prefer it to all the other travel powers but Super Jump is a second favorite of mine. They all have their good and bad qulaities however.

The four travel power pools are:

Flight
Super Jump (Allows you to jump very high and far, very fast)
Teleportation (Allows you to teleport 100 yds at a time)
Superspeed (Run really really fast)

All the travel powers are available at level 14 but you have to buy one of the first or second powers in the pool at 6 or later to be able to purchase a travel power at level 14.

Posted

Flying is the most convenient travel power, but they made it the slowest to compensate.

There is also Superspeed, Super-Jumping and Teleporting. Plus a myriad of flying or super-jumping temporary powers from various sources.

EDIT: Heh, beaten again. I do love how everyone falls all over themselves to help out around here. It's almost competitive.

Dec out.

I am completely biased in favor of flying so believe me when I write the following:

Fly is the safest, easiest and slowest travel power.

Superjump is faster and you can land in trouble but you can control your movement while in the air similar to fly.

Superspeed is fastest in a fashion but completely on the ground so getting up in some zones it is not efficient.

Teleport is technically the fastest but a total endurance hog until/unless well slotted to reduce endurance. Plus some people have trouble with the temporary hovering in it not being long enough and plummet to their deaths.

Anyone can get any of the travel powers. At level 6 you can start choosing pool powers instead of just your primary and secondary powersets. In order to obtain a travel power you need to choose a pre-requisite power from the same pool. In the case of fly that would be Hover or Air Superiority (a melee attack which I would recommend over hover).

At level 14 or higher if you have the pre-req power you can take the travel power.

There are temporary versions of fly and superjump available in the game. You can get fly at level 1 with the temp power we just got for the jetpack. You would need the salvage and influence to craft it. There is also at levels 5-9/10 you run radio missions in Kings Row and after 3 of them your detective will offer you the Atlas Park safeguard which will reward you with the temp power jetpack.

At level 10 it is a 50/50 chance for Atlas Park or Kings' Row safeguard. Levels 11-14 it is Kings' Row and Kings Row has the Superjump pack temp power.

There are 2 other temp fly powers. One is purchased with real money at $5/month and the other costs 40,000 influence in the Shadow Shard.

So you have a ton of fly options without even taking the power.

[Edit] And Dechs' link is the bestest.

Once you reach level 6 you get access to the power pools. If you select one of the two powers available from them (which you can do at any time after level 6) then at level 14 you get access to a third power int he selected pool. Four of the pools (Teleport, Flying, Leaping and Speed) are referred to as the "Travel Pools" since the 3rd power is a travel power. So essentially there are four travel powers that anyone can get.

Here's the rough break down:

Teleport: Pros:The fastest power (if you're good at it), allows for full 3D movement. Cons: High endurance cost, sucks in tight spaces, can be nausea inducing in some people

Super Speed: Pros: Fast movement in all environments, provides some stealth capability against NPCs. Cons: No vertical movement so you have to detour or use temp powers to get around it, older computers can have trouble rendering stuff fast enough

Super Jump: Pros: Provides a nice balance between the speed of Super Speed and the mobility of Flight. Cons: cannot remain in the air permanently, having to bunny-hop in areas with low ceilings gets annoying

Flight: Pros: Perfect 3D movement, can remain in the air indefinitely. Cons: even with slotting it's noticeably slower than the other powers.

Personally I prefer Super Jump but plenty of people like the other ones.

Additionally you can get temporary powers that provide limited travel powers. Here's the ones I can remember:

Raptor Pack (Jet Pack): Basically unslotted flight with a limited duration. These are available in a few ways. The easiest (if you're between the levels of 5 and 10) is to go to King's Row and talk to the cop there. He'll give you a radio that you can use to do random missions. After you do a few you'll be given a chance to prevent a bank robbery, doing so gives you a raptor pack with 2 hours fuel.

Zero-G Pack: Equivalent to unslotted Super Jump, gotten in the same manner as the Raptor Pack except you have to be level 10-15.

Ninja Run: The only permanent "temporary" travel power. This is given to all people who purchase the Martial Arts Booster pack. It falls between Flight and Super Jump in terms of speed and between Super Speed and Super Jump in terms of vertical mobility.

And don't worry about "pestering" (your not, BTW). If a new player is genuinely interested in the game, most of the forum regulars will go out of their way to help.

We respond well to polite inquiries, and generally will attempt to render assistance to anyone who needs it. Although our patience with those who seek assistance through being hostile is a bit thin, we still do our best unless the individual refuses to be helped.

One more thing I haven't seen mentioned yet that a lot of new folks get tripped up on going from the trial to the full game... Make sure that you upgrade your existing account in the account manager and do not make a new one when you purchase the game and apply the code.

This way you get to keep everything you have worked on in the trial version of the game.

And a hearty welcome aboard...

Oh and about travel powers. If you end up wanting to try Teleport, there's a keybind that makes it bearable. Just type:
/bind SHIFT+LBUTTON powexec_name Teleport
You hold shift, and teleport straight at the spot you clicked.
But, I'm more a fan of speeeeed. You learn the layouts of everywhere really well!

This is why I have TP; I get TP friend so that when a few people I know who are speeders get completely and totally lost I can just tp them to the mission door so we can get started... I really don't like exploring every inch of the city because I can't find a way to get over an inconveniently placed wall.

Also, does the game support addons of any type and if so is there any you all recommend?
Didn't see anyone mention this so...

/bind mousechord "+forward"

Also, if you briefly click both mouse buttons at once while auto-running, it stops you.

Not sure if anyone pointed this out either -

www.paragonwiki.com or wiki.cohtitan.com are the same site and the main wiki for the game.

There is a wikia wiki - but that's a ad/virus trap, avoid it.

The above info about turning off the autorun was pulled from the following pages :

I love the liberty at which you can approach this game, and not forced into some cookie cutter elitist build that forces Math & Spreadsheets upon you...After raiding 25mans in wow, this is a great change of pace... I am interested in the Travel Powers and everyone has different opinions on them, which is good....

So there is no real LOOT system you are after in the instances, you are not having to roll for gear or anything?

You know.. You get City of Villains too.. Not bad huh?

No rolling for gear. It's all random. You do get tickets you can use to buy rolls or rewards with. You might want to check your wiki about that.

Experience and Influence/Infamy are divided evenly among teammates, with a bonus amount depending on the size of the team.

Inspirations, Enhancements, Salvage, and Recipes have a chance of being granted to every teammate whenever an enemy is defeated. Your chance of receiving one of these items is independent from everyone else's chance: an enemy might give an Inspiration to a teammate, and this does not affect whether you will also receive an Inspiration from the same enemy.

Merits are granted to the owner of a mission arc when it is completed. They are also granted to an entire team when they finish a Task Force or Strike Force. When a Giant Monster is defeated, every member of a team that collectively did at least 10% of the total damage to that Giant Monster receives 2 Merits.

Yup! City of Villains used to be an Expandalone (It was its own game, but worked in conjunction with the hero servers), but when the partnership of Cryptic Studios and NCSoft ended, allowing Cryptic to go on making Champions Online, NCSoft rounded up all our existing developers, gave them their own studio (Now called Paragon Studios... See what they did there?), and gave all the subscribers full access to both games without having to purchase either seperately.

I recommend taking a look at the following link: http://www.cityofheroes.com/news/gam...ssue_list.html

If you're like me, you'll probably feel all tingly excited when reading over all the game features. I still get that feeling when I read over the update list, only my tingly excited comes mixed with a large dose of nostalgia.

DK, I'm glad you warned him of that. I messed up long ago - don't remember what I did. I think I started with City of Villains, and when I upgraded with GvE version to get Hero-side, I accidentally created a second account.

Luckily the good folks in customer support got it all straightened out for me. That's always an option if you mess up the 'upgrade'

There is loot in the game, specifically the Invention enhancements system. The good news is it's completely optional. The base difficulty of the game is balanced around characters using regular enhancements and while inventions allow you to increase your power level beyond what is possible without them you can still enjoy the entire game without them and you won't have to worry about getting turned away from teams because of your gearscore or anything (ok, there are a few idiots who do turn people away for not having IOs, but they are by far the minority).

If you want to get deep into the invention system then it offers a lot for people who enjoy doing the spreadsheet min/max type of thing but there aren't really any cookie cutter builds. Everyone has their own opinion of how to build a character and even two characters with the same powerset combo will frequently have some differences in terms of power assignment and slotting.

Actually the amount you get is based on what you would get for killing an enemy of your own level modified by the con-level, the size of the team and the relative level of the team members. It works out roughly the same as dividing it with a bonus but not identically.

I'm pretty sure this is wrong, AFAIK drops are generated for the team and then randomly awarded. You definitely get fewer drops on a per kill basis teamed as opposed to soloing.
