Man, 500 Days of Summer annoyed me. I'm actually a sucker for romances, but watching that movie was like having a root canal. There was one creative thing in the movie, where it showed the scene in split screen with the "Planned" version on one side and the "Actual" version on the other side. That was clever, but it couldn't save it. Both lead characters were intolerable to me.
Hated Requiem for a Dream. It was just train wreck after train wreck. Well made, definitely and Aronofsky is definitely a solid film-maker, but I felt like I had been mentally mugged after watching it (much like Magnolia, another soul-scabbing film).
Throwing in another "final" pair of suggestions for The Fisher King -starring Jeff Bridges and Robin Williams in Terry Gilliam's most effective human drama. Gilliam occasionally busts loose with his requisite surreal visuals, but mostly keeps the story rooted in a touching human reality. It wasn't what I was looking for when I saw it, but it was better.
And second, Zero Effect featuring Bill Pullman as Daryl Zero, "the greatest detective who ever lived", who is also a complete basket case, with nearly non-existent social skills. Ben Stiller plays against type as the straight man agent for Mr. Zero.
Also endorsements for several previously recommended films, including Brick, Chocolate, Dexter, Black Snake Moan, Bubba Ho-Tep, and El Mariachi (though not so much for its value as stand-alone entertainment, but more for the fact that it was made by essentially a San Antonio film student on a $7000 budget. That film student was Robert Rodriguez, who has done some impressive stuff since.)
Oh yeah, both Fisher King and Zero Effect are terrific films.

Just throwing this out there before I head to bed.
Frailty: It's told in flashback mostly explaining how the narrator's father one day believes he's visited by an angel telling him that he's been chosen to hunt down demons on earth in human form. Of course the father then tries to get his two sons to help. The narrator's telling the story to explain how his brother is now a serial-killer.
It's a good thriller with some great performances, though it is sort of religious which is a sensitive issue for some.

Another day, another handful:
1. Ben Hur. Worth it just for the chariot race. The rest is great, too. Epic movie.
2. The Professional. Jean Reno as a paid assassin.
3. Ong-Bak. Nice martial arts flick.
4. The Road Warrior. Early Mel Gibson action movie, which led to sequels.
5. Dr. No, Goldfinger, etc. Bond. James "awesome" Bond.

Smart, funny movie that peels back layers of the story and characters like an onion, The Informant! How Matt Damon didn't get nominated for an Oscar for that role I have no idea. It also has an audacious soundtrack that is clever with witty (non-lyrical) musical commentary.
A gorgeous movie that is also smart and odd is The Fall. I don't know if I already recommended it, but if so I'll do it again. Easily one of the most beautiful films of recent years, it occupies the thematic space between The Adventures of Baron Munchhausen and The Stuntman.

To go in a slightly different direction I'd like to suggest Rashomon by Akira Kurosawa. It's subtitled, black and white, and very solidly in the 'classics' category (as honestly I feel many Kurosawa films are). It's a film based off of an old Japanese folk-tale and involves several people recounting the events of a crime from their perspective while taking shelter from a storm. As is often the case with Kurosawa's films Rashomon is just beautifully filmed, what he manages to do with shadows is amazing, and I've always found the differing perspective type of story to be fascinating.
Honestly, several of Kurosawa's 'best' films are available for streaming on Netflix at the moment and I'd honestly recommend any of them.

it's one of those rare movies where you sit back turn your mind off let the story flow take control and just enjoy the "run".

cube 1997
Clueless as to how they got there or why they were chosen, a student, an ex-con, an engineer, a social worker, a cop and a mentally handicapped person are caught in a maze of interlocking cubes with no apparent way out in this sci-fi thriller. Food or water is nowhere to be found, and upon further investigation, the six discover some of the rooms are booby-trapped with destructive devices. Can the unlikely group survive long enough to escape?
actually i wrote the script for this film, so ah yeah ,awkward moment ......what's there to say, i could write a book on all the ins and outs of this film .
but i'll just say this, hope your not squeamish and well if you can make it past the first 5 mins then you will be ok "evil grin",oh by the way it's rated R so take that into consideration.

edit: also i didn't pen the sequels i thought the movie stood well on it's own and i didn't want to write scripts turning it into a franchise it took me many years of researching out all the little details in it and i am rather proud of that film...so if you see the sequels to this movie, i didn't have a hand in it.
and in away it shows
anyway Hope you enjoy o:
