My Netflix Queue is Empty
Another good movie worth checking out if you haven't seen it already is Unleashed aka Danny the Dog.

Not on instant queue but I love this movie. Not sure if you will because I've shown it to others with mixed results, but it's a thinker, it's surreal, and it is a gorgeous movie in visuals and in the soundtrack. Clint Mansell is a genius composer. It's the director of Pi, Requiem For a Dream, and Sunshine.

I loved Pi and Sunshine, still need to see Requiem.

My favourite 'hidden gem' of the last couple years remains Spartan starring Val Kilmer as a Secret Service agent. It's a bit of a convoluted story, and David Mamet (always a treat when he chooses to direct a movie) pointedly chooses to forego narration or unnecessary exposition. Everything you need to know is on the screen, but it forces you to pay attention and have a working brain. Which makes it all the more engaging for me.

I really liked Sunshine.
Requiem for a Dream is a fantastic (and troubling) movie.

I could go on and on... but once you start watching classics.. you'll find you jump to others on your own..

Oh, one more for those into theatre adaptions. Well, two actually. Julius Caesar with the young and very yummy Marlon Brando as Marc Antony giving a very interesting and riveting version of Antony's speech on the senate steps. It's certainly not how I'd expect the speech to be delivered, but Brando really makes it work. And then there's Al Pacino's outing as Shylock in the recent adaptation of the Merchant of Venice. Not my favourite Shakespeare play, but Pacino brings his trademark fury to the character of Shylock and manages to make you feel sorry for him and despise him at the same time.
...meh, while I'm at it I should point to Branagh's version of Much Ado About Nothing. Possibly Branagh's best (at least his most entertaining) attempts of adapting stage plays for the screen. Even Keanu Reeves rocks in this...

I figured so when you spoke of 'a thinker's movie' in the OP. Several posters on IMDB have apparently actually gotten lost in the story because they got hooked on details. On that note, I presume you've seen Ronin (the Frankenheimer movie with De Niro and Reno) which uses a smilarly subdued narrative. A lot is implied about the various characters, their motivations and backgrounds, but you really need to look for the clues to get an idea of who they are. Plus, it has some amazing car chases.

Also, if you haven't seen it, you *HAVE* to watch "Awakenings". From Wikipedia:
Awakenings is a 1990 drama film based on Oliver Sacks' 1973 memoir Awakenings. It tells the true story of Oliver Sacks, fictionalized as American Malcolm Sayer and played by Robin Williams who, in 1969, discovers beneficial effects of the then-new drug L-Dopa. He administered it to catatonic patients who survived the 1917-1928 epidemic of encephalitis lethargica. Leonard Lowe (played by Robert De Niro) and the rest of the patients were awakened after decades of catatonic state and have to deal with a new life in a new time. |
One Hour Photo- Robin Williams in a very very creepy and convincing role.

Robin Williams is better than Robert De Niro. There, I said it. Reason why I say this is because Williams could do anything De Niro has done, but De Niro can only do a fraction of what Williams can do. I can see Williams as Travis Bickle. Can you see De Niro as Mrs. Doubtfire? I rest my case!

I have to second 500 Day of Summer. I saw this in the theatre and bought it the day it released on DVD. This movie hits me so damn hard every time, even though I know EXACTLY what's coming. It's a great flip on the common theme of "girl meets boy" (my boyfriend called it "a chick flick told through the guy's eyes"...and he loved it).
I'll give just a few suggestions:
- Secondhand Lions (makes me cry every single time - although to be honest, I cry at the drop of a hat )
- Stigmata (Christian spirituality without a huge emphasis on religion itself/church...one of my favorite movies, and I'm agnostic bordering on atheist...plus it has Chumbawamba doing the theme song! )
- The Jerk and/or My Blue Heaven (Steve Martin, nuff said!)
Kids' movies (I am a HUGE fan of kids movies):
- Coraline (and read the book)
- The Last Unicorn (probably my favorite animated movie of all time)
- Fantasia 2000 (several of these make me bawl my eyes out, even though there is no story other than the music/art)

You should have gone on to include Inherit the Wind. For such an old movie, it still gets me really riled up in all sorts of ways, and considering the modern day Creationism shenanigans going on in parts of the world, it's actually timely again.

or Spencer Tracy... Captains Courageous, Boys' Town, his version of Dr Jekyll, any of his movies with Hepburn (Adams Rib, Woman of the Year, Pat and Mike, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?), Father of the Bride, Judgement at Nuremberg...
or Gene Kelly... Anchors Aweight, The Pirate, On the Town, An American in Paris, Brigadoon, Singin' in the Rain...
or other stuff about the craziness of religion at times.. like Elmer Gantry.. which of course takes you into Burt Lancaster's whole career...
and well.. like I said.. it just goes on and on...

More since it's another day:
1. Hart's War - Bruce Willis and Colin Farrell in a WW2 prison camp.
2. Three Days of the Condor. Robert Redford on the run. Speaking of, I assume you've seen The Sting. If not, go see it. Now. I'll wait.
3. Awakenings. Robin Williams and Robert DeNiro. And speaking of DeNiro, Ronin and Men of Honor are worth the watch, too. And for Robin Williams, check out Jakob the Liar, Dead Poets Society, and Mrs Doubtfire (worth it just for the Run-by fruiting bit!)
4. Schindler's List. Probably seen it, but just i case...

Well, that really is a matter of taste. Mind you, I didn't think he was funny in the 'Meet the...' movies. Then again, I don't really like Robin Williams' straight comedies either. Mrs. Doubtfire was pretty much stale **** compared to, say, Patch Adams, What Dreams May Come, Good Will Hunting, Insomnia or Dead Poets Society.
