how do you view CoH time?
Typically, I view COH time on a COH watch.
(Other than that, I don't really worry about it. Aside from some missions which, in text, are going "Oh, wait, just got this info, you need to do X!" I assume there's investigation time, dinner, etc. in between - levels don't equate to years to me or anything like that.)
I don't think there's any strong correlation between 'in-game' time and real time. I always view things like this; my new character completes the tutorial and it's shortly after the Rikti War, events unfold as my character does missions, in-game time passes. With each new toon, time 'resets'. The events of Going Rogue etc are certainly meant to be at least a few years after that.

I try not to think of it. I also don't try to think of why my characters may be standing inside the door of the police station for 20 days.

Time's funny in comics. And also in a comic-related MMORPG.

through the strenuous waving of a hand . yeah thing sprogress and some events seem to specify time moving, but really it is all pretty much handwaved where convenient.
The only character who I match anything to with levels is a prototype robot who is limited to X% power level in order to protect the city from collateral damage (where X = current level, so it's only at half power by lv50)

what i meant is how do you view the progression of time through the missions... generally speaking...
Year 1 = Rookie year where you establish yourself, ussually fight street crime.
Year 2 = City relies on you more, Main Villains start coming out of the wood work
Year 3 = Joining bigger groups, or bigger groups start recognizing you, main villains become established...
Year 4 = ???
So as you go through these missions time is passing but how much and where is the imaginary dividing line between years... to me it seems that roughly every 10 levels is a year... The year 6 stuff is more or less the most recent additions, and year 7+ will be going rogue's, Icarnates, and stuff like that.
for each character though I see it as each character doing it in the same year as all the characters...
So in a sense to a lvl 1, the Praetorians don't exist yet...
Still the same answer. I basically don't let time enter into it except in my website timeline, and I fudge a lot of those dates to suit me.

My CoH time relates to the order I play it in quite a bit, actually. Although it means that some parts of the game don't make sense as I play them, the order that I play something is the order that it happened chronologically.
I tend to look at it as one CoH day/night cycle is about one week. This may only work for me because I'm one of the more casual players. My characters are in an order of their own, too. If I were to make a character today, then in my mind they're starting their careers whilst my main is at the top of his game. This helps with my SG, as my main provides assistance and media pull to my younger heroes.
This messes up some shorter storylines, such as Breakout (which I tend to get around by just seeing it as a regular drug bust), or the Midnight Club entry arc, but it makes long-term changes much easier to process; such as Architect Entertainment opening for business, along with the Rikti War Zone opening up.
Me look up in sky Sun is right above head and stomach growling.. it time for lunch. Later me look again and sun very low almost touching hills to west.. time to log off fancy magic box at work and me go home. At home stomach growl again .. time for dinner. Dinner done and all chores finished.. time play COH/V on personal magic box me have at home Later it very dark outside and me very sleepy ..time go bed. LOL
Like most I few each character as starting around if not at the same time in sort of flashback mode. I don't really view levels as years as such just a normal progression of the game. After all unless I use my costume slots to do so its not like my character ages. At 50 level she looks the same way she did at level one when she arrived wide eyed and innocent and on the steps of Atlas Park as a level 2. And to anyone that knows me and my frequent use of free costume slots just be quiet hehehe .. okay so my FIRST character on COV changed looks so often before I found one I really liked members of my on Villain Group didnt recognize her and kidded me constantly about it. But she's 50 level now and not a single grey hair :-D

Alternate timelines sure can be confusing.
I view CoH time using this
Generally, as wasted... :P
That's how we all (readers and companies) viewed comic book time in the Silver Age. But the Bronze Age had to come along with obsessive fans and, worse, ex-fan writers and editor who thought it had to "make sense" inventing 7-10 year sliding timelines, etc. They should have just left it alone.

Like this
I hand-wave it, except for my jaded original main, who sits around griping about how nobody would have to arrest Dr. Vahzilok for the TEN THOUSANDTH TIME if they'd just let her execute him, and dangit, Madeline, put down the pendant, you should know better by now.
Having Vengeance and Fallout slotted for recharge means never having to say you're sorry.
My Characters are not beckoned to the same linear cage that I am. Time really has no meaning unless the bomb is at 00:03
how do you view CoH time? |
Beyond that, I don't worry about the timeline unless it specifically references itself, at which point I just go with whatever it claims.
Samuel_Tow is the only poster that makes me want to punch him in the head more often when I'm agreeing with him than when I'm disagreeing with him.

Down here, it's our time. It's our time down here.
that's how I view it.
I RP. So, really, I don't start them over at year 1 with every toon.
Now one could RP and do it that way. But then you have to RP with just those who follow the same rule or things will go out the window fast.
Lvl 1 SKed up to a Lvl 50...
Lvl 50: Yeah. Hero One got taken by the Rikti and turned into one them. Also turns out the Lost are really humans the Rikti are trying to turn into Rikti. Countess Crey, yeah, she's arrested now. Took her down. Won't be seeing her anymore.
Lvl 1: What?!
Or you look at other things in game...like the Council's return just last year, but you'll run into them before you get into this years timeline.

The BrandX Collection
What I mean is...
every level 50 can go through x missions in a given amount of time, but really those have been roughly the same missions for the last 6 years....
So When do you view the mission events to take place?
I'd say something like
Mission levels...
1-15 = Year 1
15-25 = Year 2
Going Rogue + = Year 6+?
