That's actually kind of what I was going for. I thought that Jack would emerge as a white, or "good" version of smokey.

Though it would be a nice twist, I think the show has been firm in that smoke in any form is bad.

See: The Others and Rousseau, various fires on the Island, and, of course, Smokey

A new thing to ponder: Hurley's vision of dead people (at least, off-Island), is that the sideways verse trying to communicate with him?

I say just cause the vision of Charlie Hurley saw when he got off the Island looked the same as Sideways Charlie. Of course, that is mainly because Dominic Monaghan decided to shave his head before his resurrection scene in S4.

If the show was self-contained to the Island and the Oceanic 6 stuff never happened and if Desmond never time-traveled, I think it would be easier to swallow that what we have seen for 6 seasons was purgatorty itself.

But they went out of their way to establish the real world exists outside the Island and our character visited it. From when Ben told Jack that the Red Sox won the World Series, to Jack commenting upon a real baseball score in 2007, the show went to great lengths to establish that the Island world is connected to the real world.

Given that Matthew Fox said after the show that the Island was real, and the only "purgatory" was the sideways verse. Yes.

Yeah just reading some comments from producers about what the "real" story is. I still think the show is more poetic if you see them as having been dead the whole time.

But as usual, "reality" is a mess even on TV

I'm not sold that that wasn't how they might have originally planned the show, but when a lot of people guessed very early on that they were all dead, I think this was their solution to still have the story end in the same place but from a different direction. Whether or not it is more or less poetic, is debatable, but I get your point. It would also go a long way in explaining the unexplainable and fantastical, but that isn't the show we got. And from my viewpoint what we ended up with was pretty special.

I watched the last 20 minutes today and cried more than last night. Hearing what the others who "knew" already had to say to Jack and each other had a much different impact. Kate's performance especially was touching and really showed how she grew into an actress.

That's what I really loved about the show. They never really romanticized anything.

I keep on coming back to this point, but I love how they even made the "gods" fallible.

Oh, something funny from last night: the local news had their lead story as the finale of Lost. They sent a reporter out to broadcast from a Lost party as they watched the finale. The reporter said he was a few episodes behind so he had to ignore the finale. Then they had him interview someone to get their opinions and he again said he hadn't watched the last few episodes yet.

How much does that stink? Some people hate going into work because their coworkers might spoil an episode they missed. For this guy, work was forcing him to be spoiled!

Haven't commented on a Lost thread here since about season 3, but been an avid watcher of the show and reader of these threads. Going to miss them both.

Couple of thoughts I wanted to toss out there for the discussion.

1) Brilliant ending to a brilliant show! I could not have asked for a better ending.
2) Syaid's death on sub, saving as many as he could by taking the bomb and running. Not only was this evidence of Hurly's statement in the Flash Sideways about Syaid being a good person, but a very nice statement socially. A suicide with a bomb that was meant to save lives, not take them.
3) John's statement to Jack in the Sideways, "I hope someone does for you what you just did for me." meaning the remembering. On reflection later it was pure brilliance that it was his father's casket that really brought home his remembering followed by a visit from Christian. Christian was Jack's major relationship throughout the show and it definately should have been him that allowed Jack to remember.
4) I did a little research after "Across the Sea." The name Claudia, Jacob and MiB's real mother, has a historical reference as Vesta Virgin in ancient Rome. She was a senator's daughter who saved his life from an angry mob. I then looked up Vestal Virgins. Very interesting. They were priestesses of Vetsa, the goddess of home and hearth. She, the goddess, was responsible for keeping the fire of the world burning. Just an interesting tidbit there.

So many other profound moments in this finale. I just wanted to toss in my two cents on a couple of them. Thank you all for the last six years of thoroughly enjoyable forum reading. I will miss these threads as much as the show.

Ladies and gentlemen, this finale was what it was due to, IMO, a conglomeration of things:

1. The writing. Wasn't always good; even its "best" may not rank anywhere near the top of television writing excellence. Even so, the writers and creators (here I'm including all creative forces behind the camera) delivered an experience to be remembered.

2. The acting. Again, wasn't always good. But the actors also delivered that special experience. We came to know these people enough to care about what happened to them.

3. The audience. And here I'm not just speaking of the people who post in this board's Lost threads. I can't put into words, exactly, how the viewing audience contributed to making the show what it was, but perhaps it was the love of the true fans.

All of these things combined into something that was actually more than the sum of its parts. Maybe it's the melancholy talking, knowing that it's over, but I recall only a very few shows that are in the same category as Lost. An earlier poster mentioned a few television shows, M.A.S.H. among them. Again, I'm not saying that Lost was the best show on television ever, but it IS, again IMO, one of those rare shows that come along only once in a lifetime. Although, *heh*, I just mentioned that it's not unique in that regard...nevertheless, I stand by my statement. Once-In-A-Lifetime-Shows is a category, not just "The Best Show Ever and Nothing Like This Will Ever Come Along Again."

You meet thousands of people during the course of your lifetime. Only a precious few do you hold dear.

You watch hundreds of TV shows during the course of your lifetime. Only a precious few do you hold dear.

Thank you, thank you, to everyone ever involved with Lost, whether behind the camera, in front of the camera, or in front of a TV screen at home. I'm hopeful that another show will mean this much to me in the future, I'm sad that my relationship with this show is at an end, but I'm very happy and thankful that it was a part of my life.

/drama king sentimentality

P.S. I cried during the finale more than my wife did. I'm pretty sure it's one of the reasons she loves me, but I dunno; women are still a mystery to me.

M. Bison: For you, the day Bison graced your village was the most important day of your life. But for me...it was Tuesday.

McClane: Hey, thanks for saving my daughter's life.
Farrell: What was I going to do?
McClane: That's what makes you "that guy."

I enjoyed the final episode, but I need some help with something:

How did Jack get out of the cave? When he was shown laying on a tree by the river it seemed similar to the MiB getting expelled from the cave. Did I blink and miss something?

No, he sorta passed out, then awoke to find himself outside the cave.

Unless we both missed something...

Wasn't he in the same place that the Man in Black's body was located after he turned into the black smoke?

This is slightly off topic, but I'm curious as to which of the actors/actresses will be able to move past the characters they played on Lost and go on to be successful elsewhere. Particularly, if any of the stars of the show will be a break out success in films, who all do you think it would be?

Now, obviously, Michael Emerson and Terry O' Quinn are the two most talented actors but that won't necessarily translate to major big screen success.

If I had to put my money on just one of them, it'd be Josh Holloway.

Well Terry O'Quinn is a long time TV actor going back well before he got involved with JJ's shows. I remember him fondly from Millennium and Harsh Realm.

But you have to remember that shows with large ensemble casts, it's difficult for a single actor to stand out beyond the character type they were originally chosen to play. Terry O'Quinn tends to play authority types, a natural leader that people would choose to follow. Those are the rolls he played in the past, they'll be rolls he'll play in the future.

I never watched those shows, but I remember him as the admiral that was Riker's former captain from TNG. In the episode where they find his old experimental ship stuck inside an asteroid and he's obsessed with getting it back. ... I used to remember the character's name but it escapes me at the moment. Also the name of the episode.

Also remember seeing Daniel Dae Kim in a few things before Lost, most notably(for me) as the first officer of the Excalibur from B5 spinoff Crusade.

Wouldn't surprise me if Matthew Fox got more movie roles, or at least more TV roles. I know it's not a popular belief around here, but I thoroughly enjoyed Speed Racer and liked him in it. Would prefer something with him as the lead, though.

I also recently saw Desmond's actor in something, though I can't remember what it is... I know he was in that Dead Like Me DTV that came out a bit ago.

Then there's the hobbit, who I've seen here and there.

There are a lot of Losties that looked familiar to me, but I can't remember where I'd seen them. So they've had careers before, and unless they have enough money to retire and end up doing just that, I know we'll be seeing them again soon.

Also- the pieces on the beach were clearly from a widebody twin-aisle airliner, and the Ajira plane was a 737 single-aisle narrowbody. And the "bent up wingtips" are called winglets. Yes, I'm an aerospace engineer. I've designed some of those parts.

Which save on fuel and improve take-off distances.

Not to be confused with aglets whose true purpose is sinister.

Hurley&Ben; the mystery man with the heart of gold and the schemer who'd sell his own mother to get what he wants. They're nothing alike. They have a secret Island base.

And together... THEY FIGHT CRIME!

This is Hurley we're talking about here. He'll likely replace it with a Star Trek quote.

Now I've seen nearly zero of Lost. I think I caught one episode of season 4 and it was confusing as all get out so I decided I couldn't simply "drop in" to the show and get it. But I did watch the finale and it was still emotional to me. The vision flashbacks to the island was enough to set into context the various relationships that had developed over the duration of the show. At the very least the finale was well written and edited to convey the emotional backstory for all of these characters and it was truly a pleasure to watch.
