Lost - SERIES FINALE! - 5/23/10

This is it, folks! This is “The End!” Both in the sense of that is the episode title and the end of the series known as Lost! Starting at 9 PM EST tonight (with a 2 hour retrospective before hand, and later, a one hour reunion show), and lasting for two and half hours, we will see what finally becomes of Jack Shephard, Kate Austin, James “Sawyer” Ford, Hugo “Hurley” Reyes, John Locke, Miles Straume, Desmond David Hume, and Benjamin Linus. And that’s just the main cast that’s on the Island! Will we see the final sideways fates of Sun, Jin, Sayid, and people we only briefly glimpsed: Boone, Charlie, Charlotte, Daniel? And where the heck is Juliet and who is she getting coffee with?

And what of that title? On the surface, it seems simplistic, as it is the end of Lost. But hark back to this time last year, when the Season 5 finale aired. What did Jacob say to the Man in Black? It only ends once. Everything else is progress. Will we see lots of progress in this episode? Will Jack survive till the very end or will he die in the irony of irony, since his character was supposed to die in the original script of the pilot? Or will Smokey be defeated? Is his victory what leads to the sideways universe? What is your bet for final scene of Lost? I place even odds on Jack and Locke, on the beach, having a similar conversation as Jacob and MiB did on the beach.

Of course, what I pictured as the ending scene of Lost changed with each season. After Season 2, I was sure it was going to be them being rescued. At the end of Season 3, I was sure it was going to be them returning to the Island and witnessing another plane crash, and having our Losties become the “Others.” At the end of Season 4, I thought it might be Oceanic 815 flying over the Island, the Losties fixing their timeline. And at the end of Season 5, I thought of the Locke/Jack parallel. Some of my guesses actually got incorporated into the narrative leading up to the finale. Some of them were way off (Though, come on, Losties becoming “Others” would have been cool. RIGHT?)

I want to thank everyone who has participated in these threads over the years. Some posters have come, some have left. Some have played “Bad Cop” (Det. Ford?) to my “Good Cop” (Det. Straume?) in discussing Lost. But, overall, I think these threads have been enlightening and fun. With Heroes we had fun gently mocking it. With Lost we had fun deconstructing it. Let’s not let Lost become like Fight Club. Let us talk about Lost even when it is done. And let us welcome those who join the party late and watch it on DVD and come here to share their opinions in the summer months and years to come.

Finally, I ask you not to spoil anything before the show airs on the East Coast, even if it only a sentence of a summary of a scene. A lot of info is going to break today, or at least, that is the fear of Damon Lindelof. So this is a personal preference of mine. I am in Lockdown mode and I do not wish for the black light of the Hatch to come on and illuminate a hatch map before I am prepared. As Damon said in his Twitter: Let us EXPERIENCE this episode.

So let’s discuss your final thoughts leading up to the finale. Let me hear it all. The highs and lows of watching Lost. How has Lost affected your “real life?” I have purchased Lost action figures, the Dharma jumpsuit, become somewhat of an oracle of Lost info and theories amongst my friends and relatives. I have been nearly (jokingly) thrown off a plane for referencing Lost and indicating I would know what to in case of a crash. Lost will forever be a reference point in my life, something I have used to bond with people and yes, even expand my knowledge (Lost Book Club, I am looking at you!)

Well, I am rambling, but let me close with the final line of the pilot. Spoken by Charlie Pace, bassist of Driveshaft, it sums up the series perfectly and this discussion: “Guys, where are we?”

I can't wait. It's simulcast here in the UK with the US but I won't be able to stay up that late, so I hope our recorder works, or I'll have to wait until Friday!

My ideas:

- The words "The End" with the final credits rolling, and then at the last second they add a "?"

- A CGI Rod Serling shows up and explains everything.

- Bobby Ewing in the shower.

- At least one of the cast members boards the SS Minnow for a 3 hour tour.

- The entire cast turns out to be superhuman criminals trapped in an interactive psychic reality by Matt Parkman.

Story Arcs I created:

Every Rose: (#17702) Villainous vs Legacy Chain. Forget Arachnos, join the CoT!

Cosplay Madness!: (#3643) Neutral vs Custom Foes. Heroes at a pop culture convention!

Kiss Hello Goodbye: (#156389) Heroic vs Custom Foes. Film Noir/Hardboiled detective adventure!

The final scene will have something to do with the concert because that is actually the "end" as it is the timeline correction due to...................

I'm sticking with my theory from last week.

Flocke will finally get to the heart of the island with some explosives (or whatever he's going to use to destroy the island). Meanwhile someone (my guess Ben) will turn the donkey wheel thus moving the island through time. When the island lands in the new time it will then be destroyed, thus sinking it as we saw in the sideways universe. It's no longer there, 815 can't crash..........boom sideways universe.

Also once they all gather they will have their "flashes".
Jacks ex will be Juliet and she and Sawyer will flash.
Jack and Kate will flash on each other.
When they are all together someone will piece together what needs to be done in the original timeline to "fix" things and Desmond will communicate that to Jack and the others on the island.

While I like the completion of Jack and Locke sitting on the island as the ending, according to my theory that won't be possible as the ending involves the island being sunk. Unless of course there is another .................duh duh dunnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn.

It's a sad day though as a show we've all loved is going, but at least it's going out on it's own terms. I'll miss it and don't think we'll see another like it for a while. I also miss our passionate discussions here on "OMG what just happened?" or "OMG I really hate [insert your pet hatred] or "OMG I want next week NAO!" It's been fun. Namaste.

I rarely post in these threads (most of the time because I didn't have my subscription active), but I've always enjoyed reading them.

I can't believe we are approaching the end here. Lost has been such a big part of my TV schedule for so long.... it will be difficult to find a replacement.

As for what might happen, I think I'm sticking with my theory on the alternate universe: That the islands destruction actually freed Smokey there.

Ultimately, I would love to see some actual ramifications from Smokeys 'release' from the island... We've really only see him perform some local destruction. I'd like to see if he was able to perform global destruction in any way (other than just flying around the globe kill'n stuff around him). I'm thinking he's actually freed by the destruction of the island in the alt universe... and the gathering to the concert is to set up electro magnets to destroy him there. That's his only real weakness and, I'm guessing, the only way to destroy him. Put him between 2 massive Electro Magnets and pump up the volume. Desmond's immunity would probably come in handy too. He could keep Smokey there long enough for them to start up. Desmond steps out of the way and Smokey gets trapped and/or destroyed or sent back into the alternate universe to merge with his other self. The merge is because, since he technically has no 'body'... there is nothing rooting him to that universe.

And on the other universe? Everyone but Jack and Smokey leaves the island (via airplane) and never look back.

But that's just a theory. I can't wait to see what actually happens.

Just wanted to say how much I loved coming here to read everyone comments about Lost every week. I knew no question I asked would be too stupid.

I never really had a theory about this last season, just really am looking forward to watching it all again to pick out all the things I missed the first few times.

I am suprised Miles has made it to the final show. Do you think he'll last to the end?

I have always been a fan of Hurleys. One of my favorite scenes of him is when he gets the old Dharma van running, and Jin raising his arms in victory. Very cool.

With less than 7 hours to go, I'm getting pretty anxious. Since Tuesday's episode, I've been wondering if someone else will have to become the smoke monster. Maybe that's the only way to kill MiB; to transfer the light he carries to someone else. Hopefully, that wouldn't require a new rivalry to form between Jack and the New Smokey. Of course... if Jack became Smokey, then he could be an even better protector for the Island than Jacob was.

@Rylas

Kill 'em all. Let XP sort 'em out.

Here's something to ponder: Jack, and by extension, Lost, has always preached "Live Together, Die Alone." Will Jackob ask other people to help him guard the Island?

I am really hoping that the last page of the script that Scifi Wire posted isn't the last page. Not because of what it said but because it ruins the ending for me if it is true.

Edit: It isn't real. The type is straight even though the paper is wrinkled and the paper itself looks like a template of sorts.

Also cool that the Lost Finale got a special exemption for Emmy consideration.

Normally, when an episode of a TV series is not fully broadcast in Prime Time it's not eligible for Emmy consideration. Although tonight's episode begins in Prime Time, it ends after 11 EDT, so it would not ordinarily be eligible for Emmy consideration, thus the exemption.

But what I wonder is, will tonight's ratings count? In a similar vein, if an episode ends after Prime Time, it's ratings normally don't count. (I remember the Alias episode that followed the Super Bowl; it had the show's highest ratings ever but the ratings didn't count because the episode ended after 11 pm.)

But all that aside, wow whatta ride this has been. I'm looking forward to tonight's episode with a sense of dread. (yes, you read that correctly.) I always approach the final episodes of good series that end on a high note with a sense of melancholy. MASH, Cheers, Friends, ST-TNG, Magnum, BSG. Lost is literally the only TV show I am watching right now, now that it's over I might as well cancel my cable service.

It's been a huge part of my life for the past couple years (I only halfway watched the first two seasons and for personal reasons, skipped 3 and 4 and only picked it up again at the beginning of season 5.) I've really enjoyed all of the WTF!!!!! moments it has had: Michael shooting Ana-Lucia (yay!) and Libby (What! No!) and the first Flash Forward being my favorites.

Looking forward to the end, but very sad it is ending.

I am getting a kick out of how all these different websites and print media are writing about Lost, its impact, fav moments, etc.

For a show whose mainstream popularity dimmed after S2, it is undeniably a part of pop culture now.

I know I'll be waiting until after the finale to post. But I'd like to take this opportunity for one last time saying how much I loved "Through the Looking Glass". Just for old times sake.

According to Adam Horowitz, writer and exec producer on Lost, the last time a finale aired on May 23rd, it was "Through the Looking Glass!"

Rewatching the pilot on abc.com. It's hard to believe it's ending. Now what'm I going to do on Tuesdays?

One thing I'm picking up from the pre-finale wrap show from both the actors and the producers is how the show came together by looking for good actors and writing roles for them, rather than being stuck on a character and trying to shoehorn an actor into it. I'd be willing to wager that every character on Lost was either different than envisioned or not even on their radars when the creative team came up with the idea.

Who else could have played people like Locke, or Ben, or Desmond, or even Hurley?

I also hope more shows in the future follow Lost's lead of not having to answer every question posed within a given season, or within a few episodes. It's ok to answer questions with more questions, and to throw the audience for loops every so often.

Loose --> not tight.
Lose --> Did not win, misplace, cannot find, subtract.
