There was a recent thread about top 5 improvements to the game, and it made me think back of all the updates. More specifically, the additions to this game. It took a sec for me to realize that "Oh yeah! That wasn't always here!" That there have been some really smart updates to the game experience that I pretty much forgot they were introduced; they're second nature in the game now.

My list:

  • Icon. I remade my first character way too many times, just getting his legs/boots right. Thank goodness for icon.
  • Global chat/friends: There was a time when you couldn't track/talk to a friend outside of a specific character. This is the only list I use now.
  • Consolidation of enhancements, enhancement availability: tp range? Cone range? Really? ..And when vendors wouldn't sell some enhancements live travel power enhancements. So glad that's over.
  • Break frees. When squishies no longer were out of luck once mezzed, and they hadn't eaten their mez prevention candy.

What stuff has been introduced that you forget is/was 'new?'

Heck, I don't even think we had wakies when I first started playing, though I might be remembering wrong, as I'm not really sure about it. We definitely couldn't combine insps though.

Making sure to sell DOs and SOs to the right vendor in order to maximize profit (otherwise I might not be able to afford my next round of enhancements in a few levels!).

Stacking armours- Tanks only being able to run one armour at a time really sucked.

For that matter, the change from "Unyielding Stance" to "Unyielding" was also a really nice change. Forced immobilize to use your status protection, not so fun.

Also, the Sonic (blast and buff) and Archery (Archery/Trick Arrow) sets. They're so established by now I sometimes forget they weren't available at launch.

I can't even remember the last time I used combining enhancements (beyond incidentally when I slot a new enhancement over an existing one).

Doors that open in missions.
Autoexemping for TFs. Since eclipsed by the SSK system. (It used to be that anyone who had out-leveled a task force had to exemplar into the TF level range and would be kicked from the TF the second they unexemped. If either of the exemplared pair lost connection the exemplar would be ended. *boot*)
Instanced outdoor missions.
The graphical upgrade that accompanied City of Villains. (Since eclipsed by Ultra Mode, but it was still a nice improvement at the time.)

Dark Armor being able to toggle on more than just one armor at a time. There was a time where the developers thought it was a good idea that Dark Armor was supposed to switch armors depending on the situation they were in.

i really forgot about that as well. Ragdoll physics was incredible when it went live. And, unlike another super MMO, it worked on the first try. Ragdoll is still hilarious to this day.

the armors and mezz protection back in the day did stink, when they did multi stacking armors(and also made stone armors look really cool when stacked) it was a major thing. i still remember having to off frozen armor to put on wet ice, and then getting pounded because all of a sudden my s/l defense was lousy.

I never cared for the ragdoll physics. If anything, it seemed to increase the problems with enemies getting stuck in walls and such.

Love the ragdoll physics.

Being able to see my current lvl in the xp bar.

Being able to see my teammates and/or hostages on my map. (Although this is an intermittent bug since i17 was released).

Capes

Auras

The old Boomtown map. Death to Superspeeders.

Did I mention Ragdoll Physics?

And oh so many more. This game has improved tremendously over the years.

Heh. Yeah, I have old screenshots pre-ragdoll - enemies sticking straight out of walls by their toes just looked odd.

Admittedly some of the ways they land now - ouch - but still.
