There is some PvP in this game, but that was never the games main focus.

Costumes - when creating a character, you can make some really interesting costumes. Later in the game, you can change your costume for in-game money (the cost is a sliding cost based on your level). You can also earn extra costume slots (so you can change your appearance on the go). Costumes have no effect on combat power in this game.

Heroside, you might want to try a Blaster (Ranged Damage/no real defense powers) or either a tanker or scrapper (both damage + defense types, with tankers having the better defense and scrappers the better damage). Defenders and controllers can do just fine as well, but tend to be a bit slower to start.

Villainside, you might want to avoid the Corrupters or Dominators at first, but really all five archetypes villain side do well - City of Villains was an add-on to the regular game, so the archetypes are more soloable/ quick to go.

I find it easy to get a team when I want to. When you first log in, the game will list the servers from Least load to heaviest load from top to bottom - which is an indication of population. After you have logged in, the server at the top will be the last server you logged into.

Don't be afraid to create alts. It's part of the game

Different powersets on the same archetype can make that AT play a lot differently - Ice/Ice blasters are a bit slower, but more "safe/controlling" than Fire/Fire, for example, which is all about damage.

15 dollars is not to bad for a monthly subscription
Enjoy the free month also

You can expect a ton of fun , meeting cool people , and hours of enjoyment
Doubt you will get bored with this game , there is so much to do and see

You run mish/tasks at lvl 20,30,and 40 for extra costumes slots and obtaining halloween event items ( you can get these at Wenthorths or during teh Halloween event in Oct ) you get an extra costume slot

Virtue and Freedom are the most populated , but all servers have people on them at various times

Have fun

You mention Euros so I don't know if you have the North American or European client. They have different servers so if you're on European, you won't see Virtue or Freedom. I don't know which is the heaviest populated European server but when you log on and see the server list, it's arranged with the last server you played on on top and then in rank of population from least (top) to most (bottom).

Technically, I think they're ranked by server load but it's as good a calculation of population as you'll get.

You don't have to invest extra money for costumes, but there have been some Booster Packs - six in all I think - that you could purchase if you wanted to. The Booster Packs - Natural, Science, Technology, Magic, Wedding, and Valkyrie - include costume pieces that are not otherwise available, as well as some bonus powers and emotes that are not otherwise available.

There are also some costume pieces available only through various editions of the game - Good vs. Evil, City of Heroes Collector's Edition, and City of Villains Collector's Edition.

None of these bonuses are necessary to play the game at all, but if you really become enamored of it, you'll probably end up buying some of them.

Have fun, and welcome to the game!

If you haven't stuck with MMOs for long some basics: Unlike action games where you use the same power but it gets stronger and stronger, in an MMO, you start using more powers and more complicated powers. At low level you only have a few attacks and the enemies are very weak so the game feels a bit boring. By the time you've leveled a few times it's very different. The developers want to ease you into the game not overwhelm you all at once. So stick it out, the game starts slow, but you will enjoy it once it gets moving.

Also, this game is really story driven. So when you do missions, take the time to read the clues and the mission stories. It is worth it. There is a lot of fun detail in there that otherwise you'd miss out on. I wish they had more cutscenes and voice acting, but the stories are quite good.

Please do the tutorial and read everything. However you will get two "Inspirations" one green with a plus sign, and one red with a starburst. DO NOT use them even though the mission tells you to. They are worth a good bit of in-game money once you get out of the tutorial. Ask for help selling them on the auction house (called WentWorths "WW" heroside and Black Market "BM" for villains) for a random amount less than 50,000. You should get much more than that when they sell.

Please avoid "AE" also known as "MA" which stand for Architect Entertainment or Mission Architect. That was an add on that lets players create custom missions in addition to the official missions. AE is wacky and not at all like the real game, and it will both confuse you and keep you from learning how the game works properly. Save it for later, you will really appreciate this!

If you make a hero, go to Atlas Park after the tutorial, and join a sewer run. If you make a villain, choose Kalinda and join a team doing her missions. But avoid "bank farm" teams.

are ther allot of players. or just like 100.
This game has the most flexible costume system out there, with only Champions Online coming remotely close. You can spend hours designing your look and it is a lot of fun. As mentioned, eventually you'll have access to 5 costumes you can swap between. There are a few costume packs you can buy, but they are 100% optional and do not make you more powerful. The longer you play the more some costumes unlock as veteran rewards, like Scottish Kilts and Samurai outfits and Angel Wings.

Average player age is quite mixed. I've played with kids as young as 10, and I have two retired grandparents I team with every weekend. Seems to be the majority in the 15 to 24 range though as with most games in general.

This is not a crowded game, but also most of the activity happens off the map, so it can appear much less crowded than it really is. You can hide so other players don't know you are online, and when you are inside a mission you won't be involved in the main "chat" channels like broadcast. So you will probably think it is empty. But watch a little more carefully and you'll see otherwise.

the most crowded zones (best to find teams at any level):

Heroside:
Atlas Park, Steel Canyon, Talos Island, Peregrine Island

Villainside:
Cap Au Diable, Sharkhead Island, Grandville

I noticed the word "Euros".
The European server list has 4 servers. Union and Defiant are the two english speaking and then there is Zukunft (German) and Vigilance (French).
Union has been the most populated server, however it is possible that Defiant has gotten an increase in population.

If you choose Union or any of the European servers, do not be afraid of saying hello in the European boards or server boards.

In any event, City of heroes is a game where you play a hero or a villain (or both... lots of both aka Altitis = Making many characters). The game is all about the journey towards 50 and not getting quickly to 50. Those who believe this are those who fall in the trap of words like "super xp", MA/AE missions, powerlevelling etc.

Now you will not start off being able to fly (like Superman), however at lvl 6 you can choose amongst pool powers and at lvl 14 a good travel power (choosing hover at lvl 6 means that at lvl 14 you can choose "flight" and FLY).
At lvl 5 though you can start with papermission/radio mission (just get to the broker/police station) and you can do missions and then stopping a bank heist or ... do the heist (if your a villain). If successful you get a temporary power (it is not permanent, but it will last some time, atleast until you get to lvl 14) who happen to be a travel power (like fly or jumping)

Thought I'd give that little tip.
Now if you are on the European servers, you can type this /t @lady arete, ThethingIwanttoask/tellanotherplayer and I'll try to answer as best as i can
If you are on the US server... then I cannot reach you, but I'm sure the other players on the other side of the pond (well for me) will be more then happy to help you

I wish you a great experience in this massive multiplayer online game.
Oh age-wise the community is a very mature (... exceptions DO exists sadly).... thus generally a very mature community of various age, from teenagers and young adults, parents that play with or without their kids to those that are grandfathers/mothers.
After all we all like superheroes/villains... anything that are Super!

One thing I will say:

I find it easy to get a team when I want to.
This mmmay not be easy for new people. It's often a complaint people have coming from other MMO's - I don't know if this game is HARDER to find a team, or if it just uses different techniques.

Broadcasting "Level 6 Scrapper LFT!" will sometimes work, but it's really unreliable.

Using the Search tool (instead of putting something into chat, type /search) gives a better idea of who's out there. Most people are in missions, most people are on teams, most people have been playing for several years and tend to hang out with their friends. Blue names are not on teams; grey names are teamed.

There's also joining global channels, joining an active supergroup with a coalition, and asking around in the board for your server. I believe there's a global channel specifically for helping new players, called "N P C". Details should be around here somewhere.

Check out the Mentor Project at the top of this forum. They should have representatives on all the NA servers and some on the EU servers to provide help and possibly one on one help learning the game.

BTW Welcome to the funhouse.

No. There are some optional items that you CAN spend extra for, but there are thousands and thousands of costume parts available automatically.

Someone did a study about this game for a college paper. As I recall, the average age was 26. Youngest and oldest people I have played with (that I know of) were 14 and 70.

Valkyrie costume pieces are not part of a digital distribution only extras pack, unlike the Super Booster series and the Wedding Pack. The Valkyrie costume parts come with the Mac Special Edition release of the game -- there's just an upgrade pack you can purchase, just like the GvE goodies pack and similar to the Hero Gear Kits (see: CoH CE) that were available at HeroCon.

Welcome.

The game also has quite a good chat system with the use of "Global Channels" which you can join on you raccount, and use your "Global Name" to chat on there. So if I'm on my character Blind Dynamo, chatting on a global channel it comes from Mega Jamie.

The good thing about these channels is that since you get the global name of people you can really get familiar with the regulars of that channel, and since anybody can set them up, channels exist for all sorts of reasons, and chat can occur regardless of whether people are in your zone or not.

(assuming your going EU as you mentioned Euros)

If you end up on Union, I would reconmend joining "Union Chat" channel for random nattering, and "Sals Badgehunters" which, although primarily there for helping get our games achievements, badges, alot of big team content is ran through this, and similar channels, and they funciton as a good knowledge base too.

Defiant likewise has Defiant Events, and I'm sure that the German and French servers have similar themed channels.

You can't server lock yourself, so if your EU at all times you can make characters on any of the 4 servers, you dont have to worry about picking one from the off.

Historically Union has had the higher number of players, but I think its probably fairly even with Defiant.

Enjoy the game!

Some of the best costume pieces can be unlocked through missions. At 20 you can run the cape mission, which was ramped up in diffiulty lately. I tend to not be able to solo the last mish, but, really, I don't like capes but will unlock them for the scarf.

If you go with blades, there are quite a few to unlock. The rarest, imo, is the Rularoo [sp?] sword. I have the katana, woot.

There are several routine, non-supergroup based events that happen regularly on certain servers too. Champion and Freedom have Tanker Tuesdays. A small group does a fire/radiation controller only team on Mondays on Freedom. Check your server's forum here at the forums.

The guides here are great, but you may just want to dork around with your first toon and not worry about opimization yet. After all, you have a second build.

my personal reccomendations for an easy toon for a beginner, fire/ice blaster or katana/wp scrapper. Some archetypes, like spine/ or MA/ scrappers are not that easy. Same for kinetic defenders or controllers.

I don't play villian side. Too gloomy for me. But hey, welcome to the game.

If you do decide to head off after a month or two, NCsoft never deletes your characters. But after 60 days if you have a bid up in the market the money, or the item you're trying to sell, will dissapear.

One quirk of the Search window is that when you first type /search, it comes up with an initial search just showing folks in your zone. Since many potential teammates may not be on the same map, it's not an accurate picture. Fill in the level range you're interested in teaming with and press the Search button and typically you'll see a much larger list of names.

Freedom: Blazing Larb, Fiery Fulcrum, Sardan Reborn, Arctic-Frenzy, Wasabi Sam, Mr Smashtastic.

that's no longer true. I left for 4 or 5 months and all my bids were still there (actually bought cheap purple sets that way)

I can't recall when exactly but they removed the 60 day limit a year or 2 ago.

Also, I'm not sure if it was mentioned already but the game is instance heavy. Meaning that when people are in missions you will not see them in the open world. They play their mission in their own little world where broadcast, local and other typical channel won't appear. (global channel will still works). They will still show up in Search.

So spamming "LFT" in broadcast will probably not help you get a team, while using global channel and search will help you a lot.

Sort of.
It used to be that, after 60 days of not checking the market, you lost whatever you had in there. That is no longer the case.
HOWEVER, if your account goes inactive (unpaid) for 60 days, you lose stuff on the market.
