Yes, they used to Fir Bolg - freaked me out the first time I saw one of them transform. I have not run a character through there in several months (mostly been red-side), so I was not aware of any change...
there are trees that are fir blog and there are trees that are devouring earth. i noticed this around i14 but never really paid attention to it.
I wonder why the changed it?

Probably because adding surprise trees in a place with trees was simply too good to pass up?
Pretty sure it's always worked like this, too. Some of them have always turned into DE instead of Fir Bolg.

I was running a DE mission a couple months ago and ran into some 'trees' growing in the middle of an office building. I had never seen this before...even though I've been playing for 5 years....so,I thought it was a graphics bug until they turned into DE and started attacking me.
Yeah, it can get pretty interesting, especially considering they are untargetable in tree form. And dont leave tree form untill aggro'd. Includeing Eochai the GM.

I still recall that first time I ran across disguised Fir Bolg: I was traveling through Croatoa - it may have been my first time ever on the map - and I stopped short suddenly, "say, does that tree have eyes on it?" So, assuming I was about to be attacked, I got closer to check...
I'm not even sure I survived it, but I didn't mind one bit. This game needs more fun moments like that.

I must admit, I had just played a set of very hard bass songs on Rock Band 2 before playing CoX so "the Trees" by Rush was firmly stuck in my brain.
Not a huge fan of Geddy's singing, but boy can that man write an amazing bass line.

I prefer the original version that actually went to release.
As to the DE in Croatoa, they've always been there, but they stay out in the Misty Wood.
In closer to town, it's always just Fir Bolg.
I remember running into them during my very first run though the zone.
