Question about Rep Bars and how to read them

Nicely done.

Hmmm... Not in the current version. It needs your board username and password and stores it in plaintext, and that's seriously insecure. I don't mind it on my computer, but it'd be irresponsible to spread that around. I'll see if I can make it use the web browser cookies instead.

If you just run that locally, just pass us the code with dummy data inserted and we can adjust it for ourselves.

Please? Pretty please?

Although I wonder how fast I could go from max neg rep to max pos rep. Any of yall wanna help me out? I need neg rep.
So in response to this post I got one positive and five negative reps and overall I'm extremely positive on the post. I understand how why it's like that, just find it amusing.

That being said, after just a few hours I'm giving up on this 'project' since it appears it would be rather difficult.

The positive one was from me. Because I'm an *******. Makes you wonder about how high my rep must be, huh?

Put me down for one.

OK, for the guinea pigs willing to try this thing and see if it works in a system other than mine, install ActivePerl (some of you might already have it, DropStats uses the same scripting language) and then download rep_comments.zip here. Unzip it in any folder, preferably one that has no files already in there, and double click it.

It will use the Internet Explorer cookies for login information, so if you're not logged into the boards from IE, you'll see this:

Getting the forum user ID ... ERROR: Not logged in?
Died at C:\Perl\rep_comments.pl line 68.

After you log into the boards using IE, it'll go more like this:

Getting the forum user ID ... OK: 375909
Searching for new posts ... OK
Getting reputation for post 2843123 ... OK
Getting reputation for post 2843108 ... OK
Getting reputation for post 2841769 ... OK
Getting reputation for post 2841458 ... OK
Getting reputation for post 2840360 ... OK

And it'll create a file called coh_reputation.html in the same folder, which will be the one I put a screenshot of above.

I used Internet Explorer's cookies because everybody in Windows has access to it, so it's not an endorsement of the browser (I use Google Chrome). If anyone here uses a flavor of Linux I can make it use Firefox's cookies.

Note that the search returns only the last 20 items in the first page; for me that's not a problem because I post only a few times a day, but if you post a whole lot, you'll want to run the script at least once every 10 or 15 posts to make sure all your posts are found. If you post that much you'll also want to increase $chkposts in rep_comments.ini

By default the script includes all your posts in the HTML, including those without any rep, so you can make sure that it's searching correctly and finding your posts. To make it output only the posts with rep, set $allposts to 0 in rep_comments.ini

I was disappointed to find a thread about Rep Bars that had no mention of chocolate or caramel.

Dude, I wish I could right half as much code as you seem to be able to churn out

"Hey guys, I just wanted to let you all know I turned off ratings because I'm above it all! Hey guys! Guys! My rep is turned off! Don't pay attention to it at all! I shut it off! My rep, that's what is off. Hey, did you know my rep is off? Yeah, that's 'cause I shut it off, because I'm so above it! I'm making sure you all know this, so every time someone starts a discussion about said rep system, I make sure to point that fact out. That fact being that my rep is shut off. Not singling you out but your post's essence is repeated in every thread discussing rep.

lol

and a good example of why I still monitor comments.

Seriously, though. Yes, I did say I see them as "pointless and distracting" but the crux of it was that I STILL liked the comments portion of it- the ability to send a very quick indication TO THE AUTHOR about how you found a post without adding to the postcount.

THAT had value.

I know some people were getting harassed via comments, but I would have preferred an OPTION to disable comments, rather than what we got. I don't want to use my rep as a popularity contest, but it helps to see the trending.

Leo, I'm going to have check that out--I always used rep as a tool to improve my posting. Cool.

There are no words for what this community, and the friends I have made here mean to me. Please know that I care for all of you, yes, even you. If you Twitter, I'm MrThan. If you're Unleashed, I'm dumps. I'll try and get registered on the Titan Forums as well. Peace, and thanks for the best nine years anyone could ever ask for.

Search "Dahjee"

They have as many red bars as I have green, maybe more.

Reason: Had the audacity to disagree with people in the PvP forums. (Guessing, I'd nevr seen the person before I saw them there)

Hmmm...I thought the rep bars where more a novelty than anything. But I do love the comments section of them.

And I've given + amd - rep to the same poster before (obviously not right after the other of course).

But seeing as how there's a +REP me thread and a -REP me thread, and recently seeing GG's rep meter going from 11 green bars slowly working it's way down to 1 red bar, back up to green, down to 3 red bars, and back up to 11 green bars within an hour.

Though that could just be a GG thing. As she's the only one I've ever seen that happen with. Or a forum game that's going. *shrug*

But I do like the comments, even if I don't always understand the comment myself.

Huh, thanks for asking this Marcian! I had my own convoluted theories as to why there were darker green bars... But was never certain!

I thought they might have been Rep Levels that had been attained, but then lost due to negative rep... Or possibly the system somehow had some sort of other ebb and flow to it, haha.

Now I know...

Huh... Once again... the truth is much less interesting... *sigh*

You know what I really dislike about this silly system?
I made some posts that were never replied to and I was sort of surprised... But not entirely, because it is common to feel ignored in forums (Unless doing something extreme)... Then, from another thread, I learned about the current rep comments system... And I discovered that those posts had a bunch of comments despite zero replies!

So... I wish people would just reply instead of leaving hidden messages that I'll likely never look for!

Silly stuff!
Thanks for asking this question though! I'm glad you're an over-sensitive sillyhead that cared enough to start a thread to find out what the deal was!

(haha, just kidding... mostly!!)

Personally, I've found that whenever someone disagrees with your views, your always the Vocal Minority.

But yeah, that Katamari Damacy reference was *hillarious*. Which is one of the reasons I miss Cuppa.

Work as in run? Yes. But it won't display anything, because the server doesn't have access to the local cookies for another domain. You'd have to give it your username and password, and I'm not willing to make anything that asks people for their COH username and password.
