Question about Rep Bars and how to read them
For some reason people are sending me PMs on the boards or global messages ingame instead of posting here about the Perl script. People, I'll see the complaints here faster :P
So far people seem to have trouble getting the script to recognize IE's cookies. This can be caused by two things:
1) You need to select "Remember me" when logging in. No cookies are created if you don't tell the site to remember you.
2) IE has to write the cookies to the harddisk before the script can read them. Usually just closing IE will do that. But if you're using a program that has an embedded browser, that might not be enough because "some kind of IE" is still open. If you can't figure out which program it is, restarting the computer will take care of that.

Oh wait, you're serious. Let me laugh even harder. *HISTERICAL LAUGHTER*
IE stores its cookies in plain text files in a shell folder which you can find in the registry at HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Exp lorer\Shell Folders\Cookies -- It does not seem to care of what security zone or settings you're using; all the cookies land in there, in simple text files. In my case, there's a text file called leandro@boards.cityofheroes[2].txt which contains the cookies "bbuserid" and "bbpassword". Copy that file, and you're logged in as me. There's absolutely nothing preventing you from accessing that file; not even User Account Control, because that file is stored in the user folders, which aren't a protected location.
At least it doesn't store anything in plain text. Regarding the version number: cookie storage hasn't changed since Internet Explorer 5, back in the Windows 98 days.

I meant the security setting that prevents all cookies, period. Some people may have it active without even knowing it.
Personally, I've found that whenever someone disagrees with your views, your always the Vocal Minority.
But yeah, that Katamari Damacy reference was *hillarious*. Which is one of the reasons I miss Cuppa. |
I think it was something along the lines of the "defend my views from all comers" mentality. Because they had to respond to each (although probably not every, since that would be nigh-impossible) disagreement sent their way, their posts and wordcount went up.
We can see this sometimes in various heated forum debates: quite often, there is just one person with a contrary view to the others, and they respond to everyone else one at a time, due to the nature of forum posting. More "vocal", in that they post more (due to responding more), but still a numerical minority.
Note that I am not judging whether a viewpoint is correct or incorrect based on whether it is held by the majority or minority. I have to put it in bold because I seem to cause people to skip over bits of my posts, and then yell at me for things I already mentioned.
So, while I have experienced being classified as a member of the Vocal Minority when I disagree with someone else, this is not always the case. It doesn't seem to happen in the majority of the cases for me, but then we're already into anecdotal evidence anyway.

enrious2 notes: The reputation system is the 2nd dumbest thing I've seen the mods do here on the boards in the last 2 years. |
LiquidX adds on: You should have been here when he had the equally idiotic "Star" system. |
Dec out.
Work as in run? Yes. But it won't display anything, because the server doesn't have access to the local cookies for another domain. You'd have to give it your username and password, and I'm not willing to make anything that asks people for their COH username and password.

If I could run it from my own personal website, I'd be good to go.

Aaah, 1 explains why it wasn't working for me. Silly Carni. On 2 things like Steam (maybe, they upgraded recently and I think removed the IE Browser component from the store) and CoH loading screen are potential culprits.
I looked at the source to have a look, never coded PERL at all. It seems very, very powerful in terms of the libraries and functions you use

Guess I'm out of luck, then, because I'm not going to install some avtivexpearl thingy just to see rep comments. If I could run it from my own personal website, I'd be good to go. |
* Find your IE cookies folder [after being logged in and remembered by IE and making sure it wrote them to disk]. On XP, it's C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_USER_NAME\Cookies. In Vista/7, I think it's C:\Users\YOUR_USER_NAME\Cookies. It's a hidden folder, so you need to enable hidden files first.
* Copy index.dat and YOUR_USER_NAME@boards.cityofheroes*.txt to the same folder where the script is. If you use IE as primary browser there might be a lot of text files in there, just copy the ones with boards.cityofheroes in the title.
* Open the script in Notepad, then:
** Delete the line use Win32::TieRegistry....
** Delete the line my $cookies_dir = $Registry->...
** On the next line, change "$cookies_dir\\index.dat" to just "index.dat"
* Immediately below require 'rep_comments.ini'; add the line print "Content-Type: text/plain\n\n"; so the webserver knows that the script is outputting plain text.
* Delete the line sleep(5);
With those modifications, the script will load your IE cookies from the copy you made, and you can run the script from any web server, because the cookies are stored with the script. The password is not stored in plaintext, so your game login can't be obtained this way; but you run the risk of someone finding what folder you're running it from and gaining access to your forum account. You really want to risk that?

Biggest Troll on the forums? I'll give you a hint:

Rep is mostly a silly and meaningless thing that can be turned into something silly and fun as long as people don't take it serously. It does help, however, to quickly identify someone as a troll.

I'm a troll? Damn I wanted to be a Hellion...

I'm late to this thread, and I am yet another who disabled rep, mainly because I never saw myself ever getting any. (Not as popular of a forum poster I guess.) I have gotten some taken away the last time I looked.
It was a post saying the the stereotype of being a gamer and not having a girl just isn't true, and in some cases, downright unfair. Minus rep for that.
Another post got me some neg rep when I made fun of people who give it out for the most minor of infractions. (An incorrectly spelled word, using 5 instead of five, stuff like that.) I said that it made me laugh whenever people did that, and soon a neg-rep message came that I decided to put in my signature.
Oh well. Not everyone can get along and agree on everything.
