I don't believe that you can. When I loaded into the game once I17 hit, I received a pop up at the loading screen. It gave me 2 choices. One was Ultra Settings and the other was Quality Settings. It said that QS were still ultra settings but lower quality of them or something to that effect.

You can lower some things in options, but I don't think you can completely get rid of it.

what was formerly highest settings would now be (if i get this right)
shadow mode: Stencil
enviroment reflection: off
watter effecs: medium or high (although new reflections may mean this is higher than old settings)
Ambient occlusion: Off

along with any other settings you previosly used (world detail %, FSAA etc)

you also have the option of cancel. Which retains your old settings.

It's in your graphics settings.

I turned off shadows and that made a HUGE difference in system performance.

Listen to the wisdom of Big Lunk, ChinaDoll

And shadows and ambient occulsion are the two big framrate killers in ultra mode.

Your belief is incorrect. Menu, options, graphics. Simple menu will give you five settings, from basic settings through full "ultra." You can also turn on advanced settings and fine tune for yourself.

The popup you see at the beginning is just telling you your computer *can* run it, and offering to use the settings.

Even then, the pop-up's just checking to see whether or not you have an OpenGL 3.0 capable graphics card. E.G.: I got the pop-up on my mobile RadeonHD 2600. Okay, yes, it can run Ultra Mode features, but even the lowest Shadow Maps are a bit beyond it's capabilities.

Nor does the pop-up detect Window Resolution. E.G. A Geforce 9600 can run Ultra Mode features decently at 1024*768... but 1280*1024 and 1440*900 are a bit of a stretch.... and 1680*1050 is generally out of the question.

Considering these types of limitations, it's easy to see why somebody would get put in a position where they would get the pop-up... think yes, I can do Ultra Mode... then find out that Ultra Mode standing still and taking screenshots is drastically different from Ultra Mode in the middle of combat.

My personal opinion is that the login-screen should allow you to access graphics options before you actually load the game, and give players a chance to tweak the settings before they load up a full geometry instance. Ergo, if the players run into an ingame performance option that's just too intensive, they can easily change that one setting.

Okay, fine, I know somebody's going to shout, yes there is, and link in some utility that allows one to Tweak CoH's settings outside of the game. There's a big problem there in that such a utility doesn't work on all platforms... and... after a quick search of Google and ParagonWiki... it's not easy to find either.

Go to the forums search, and search for the tag "TweakCoH". Yes, some people use USEFUL tags.

That's what I found too. Turning off the real-time shadows (which unfortunatly seems to make the most realism difference) made a big difference and seemed to be the bottleneck for my system between choppy playable and playable. Was getting around 40-60 fps before ultra mode, with ambient occlution and water reflections, about 20-30 fps so far...which only makes me want a new video card cause I liked the shadows.

In the settings there are 5 options if you leave the advanced settings off. "Quality" and "Ultra" are both Ultra mode settings. The 3 below that are all the old settings. Unless I'm greatly mistaken, setting it to "Recommended" turns Ultra mode settings off.

I can't run it any higher than "Quality" myself, so I feel your pain. Our other computer can't run the new settings at all.

FSAA, Full Screen Anti-Aliasing, big big pig. I had to turn it off. You still get good AA on your toon.

Shadows, they looked like baked booty anyhow. Turned them off.

Reflections down to half.

OR, put slider further to the left.

Might have to do this , tried playing last night with UM setting and the lag was unbearable could not move at all and typing was a chore as well . Quality setting still looks good so if I can't do UM at the moment , its no big deal .

Right same here Nova.

My question is how do I go back to quality settings. If I tryed ultra mode.

From the graphics options, you can turn off the advanced settings and put the slider back at "Quality" mode. At that point you can re-open the advanced settings and tweak them if you want (I like to turn off the depth of field effects).

I had a lot of success by dropping "Max Particles" down to about 1/3 of the maximum, down to 17797 instead of 50000. I think if your max particles is low enough it is impossible for anything to bog you down because any additional detail just doesn't get rendered.

I could totally be wrong, though. It's just my personal experience.

Hmm, I might look into that as I'd like the reflections to be a little greater.

Make a toon with Metallic body. It doesn't fit any concept I'd want, but wow. Swank.

ultra mode reminds me of when Ultima Online added that 3d client and no one ended up using it and all the screenshots were still the old school and better client. It would have been better if instead of messing with shadows, they'd have just added local lighting to the particles and focused more on that kind of thing than shadows on buildings and seeing myself in the building windows... which I never stop to look at anyway because I just want to play the game.

But looking at shadows and reflections is now part of playing the game
Ultra mode looks amazing, and I totally can't believe how muich of a differnece it's made to the look of the city - everything looks more solid and real with the new shadows.

Unless I'm in an area with tons of people running their powers all at once I've had very few hiccups in UM at max settings. Even when I'm on a team of MM's.

When the hiccups start I just turn down my settings and everything smooths out fine. This is the system I'm using, I need to save up for a new video card.

For my system Ambient Occlusion was the biggest drag on performance. With that disabled i can run water, shadows and reflections at the higher settings. Ambient Occlusion was nice, but i find the shadows and reflections add more to the experience anyway.

Same, I lowered that to performance. I can handle one step above performance blue side, but I later found my system struggling with that in the rogue isles.
