I have a gtx470 card and if i put the shadows on max game lags i have to turn them down to get decent framerate.
yet any other game i can max out and is a much better looking game.
Looks like coh has some optimization issues :-(

I'm not currently running ultra mode, but am getting lag spikes in the city/hazard zones, but not in missions. For example, I was on a team with 6 demon summoners without any lag, but was getting quite a bit running around Port Oakes.

If they had waited till Ultra Mode ran smooth on every possible configuration before releasing I17, we'd have to wait for months, if not years.

That being said, CoH does have some optimisation issues, it always had them though, they weren't introduced with UM.

The market is down because they took it down. Yes, there was a bug with it, but it's not such a devastating bug that the market server simply collapsed.

Hooray, I've corrected one person's misinformation! Statistically this makes me a force for good in the universe.

I'm typically not a doom crier, but I actually have to agree that there are some performance hits that make me scratch my head. I'm currently running a GTX 285, which ought to be a pretty good card, and my system is more than up to date, yet every time I turn dynamic shadows on, my framerate takes a nosedive. Maybe I'm too picky about my preferences, such as wanting 60FPS, or maybe antialising is screwing with me, but I've had to keep shadows off or risk punching my monitor.

And yet I STILL get performance hits from the usual suspects - looking across Port Oaks, in the old town of Cap Au Diable, that specific "evil spot" in grandville that drops me down 30-40 FPS if I stand in the right spot and look in a very specific direction. We're due for more optimization, I guess.

Well, the power customization database records appear to have been lost or corrupted; the market is offline, and I have some video lag despite not using the new settings (at least, that I am aware of), and there are a few other issues noted so far. So I'd say it's a fairly buggy issue, but maybe not the worst.

Even before I17, there were lag spots. The problem with the infamous statue of Recluse is not the statue, but the animated screens all around the area. There are drawn and animated even when behind other geometry.

And that's one of the biggest problems for fps hits in the game, and was made even more problematic with dynamic shadows. If the computer is still drawing complex polygons that are out of sight and hidden by some other geometry, then it gets worse if it's drawing dynamic shadows that are out of sight.

All during Closed and Open Beta, we've been reporting those fps black holes, and many of them got fixed. E.g., the torches in the entrance-cave of Cimerora was a huge fps black hole -- there was something about those animations which killed fps. The odd thing was that you could go to the edge of the map, turn around and face where the cave is, and even though it was hidden by the geometry of the hills, you still took the huge fps hit. The game was drawing and animating that cave and its contents far away and out of sight.

That's been fixed.

Another big fps hit is looking down towards one of the under-zone rooms, such as the hospital or the inside of Paragon Town Hall. It seems the ground wasn't opaque enough, and was still tracking what was happening hundreds of yards under the zone.

There are other hot spots like that, especially looking into the heart of a city zone... all the buildings supposedly obscured are being rendered, and we know that CoV was built with very 'transparent' buildings. Dynamic shadows makes that more complicated.

The Devs are working on making that geometry more opaque, but it will take time.

The best way to keep dynamic shadow but avoid those fps hot spots is to make sure your world detail doesn't go about 100%. Only top end GPUs can handle 200% with dynamic shadows and keep fps over 40. I have a 5870, the top end for ATI, and when I put world detail up to 400% (/visscale 4.0), my fps goes down to 20 fps.

Which brings me to another point that bears repeating: There is no GPU out on the market right now that will allow anyone to turn everything up to max (including 400% world scale) and be at 60 fps. Just ain't happening.

Ultra Mode is enabled for the *next* generation of GPUs to max out. This current batch can't handle it (until SLI or Crossfire is fully enabled). Everyone has to chose which features to dial back for acceptable fps.

Crysis is also an on the tower game. You've got to take into account processing time between your internet connection, motherboard, processor(s), RAM, and Video Card as well.

I'm running some Ultra Mode settings on high, others on low, and I'm on a GeForce 220. I get nearly no lag aside from server lag in some zones overloaded with lowbie villains. Try altering your various settings to get to your optimum framerate. My suggestion? Alter your FSAA. That one kills MOST cards in almost any game.

Here. I'll load it up and list my settings!

FSAA: x2
Shadow Mode: Shadow Maps
Shadow Map Shader: Medium
Environment Reflections: Ultra Quality
Water Effects: Ultra Quality
Ambient Occlusion Advanced Settings: Disabled
Ambient Occlusion: Quality

Most other settings are maxed out. Exceptions include World Detail at 100% instead of 200% and Particle Effects at around 10,000 particles (anything more than that and I have issues seeing characters)

And this is on a 220. Not a 240, 260, or 295. Tinker with your settings some and enjoy how gorgeous the game actually is. You don't need to have all settings maxed out to have a far better looking game than pre-17.

I honestly don't know what game you are playing.....

here are my settings :
FSAA: x4
Shadow Mode: Shadow Maps
Shadow Map Shader: High
Environment Reflections: Ultra Quality
Water Effects: Ultra Quality
Ambient Occlusion Advanced Settings: Enabled
Ambient Occlusion: Customized

Occlusion Strength: Strong
Ambient Resolution: Quality
Blur: Bilateral

World and Character Detail: 100%
50000 Particle Count
Enviroment Reflections: Ultra
Water: Ultra
Bloom: 100%

This is on a NVidia 9800 GT, the bare minimum roughly in terms of Ultra-capable cards. I have ZERO lag anywhere, only the known spots like Recluse Square in GV (and thats only on a DA Brute with all toggles running). I've cruised through a MSR with no glitches. Does the code need optiomization? Yes, every new patch does, that takes a week or so. Also the Market is deliberately off-line to PREVENT a mass wipe of a lot of people stuff.. caused by a bug that only appeared when the live population tried it.

The Issue was absolutely ready, nothing is 100% perfect but 17 was as polished as could be- stop whining because you unfortunately drew the short straw on bugs this time round- happens to all of us at some point.

Lag has been crazy, a lot of the time I find myself just running/spinning in place on my older rig. Never had anything like it prior to Issue 17.

Zloth has just updated CohHelper for UM compliance. Throw one of those reports with a HiJackThis in a new thread in Tech and we'll see if we can tune your rig.

Check out these threads:

Then post the results of these two programs:

  • CoH Helper - it will show us basic computer settings and your CoH configuration.

  • HijackThis - it will show us what's running on your computer concurrently with CoH. Click on "Do a system Scan and save a logfile." It will automatically open up Notepad and put the info there. Make sure Wordwrap is off in Notepad (Format > Wordwrap unchecked) before you cut and paste here.

I clicked the "enable Ultra mode" button when given the option.

I'm guessing it set everything to the max that my game computer can handle.

I've experience lag on one mission. Kept jumping back. No idea why. It went away after abit.

Other than that, the same old thing that caused lag (lag valley in the ITF) is about the only lag Ive gotten.

If I recall, all my ultra mode settings are set to max except 1, which is two notches down if I recall, and one isnt set...needs catalyst 2.something or other I think it was called (Id have to go back in game and check...says your video card MUST have this to work or something).

CoX is an old game, but Ultra-Mode itself is brand spanking new. If you want to play it as an "old game" your video card can smack around, then turn UM off. Ultra Mode, however, was designed to push the boundaries on video cards. Sure, it's got some optomization issues, but they told us months ago that if you wanted everything turned up you'd need an NVIDIA 485. The 470, they said, would run UM at the middle of the range. That seems likely: my old 8800GT runs UM at the high-middle of the range.
