Hi JS --

I ran Driver Sweeper and completely nuked ALL of the NVIDIA drivers, including my chipset.

Following this I reinstalled the 680i chipset drivers then the latest 266.58 video card drivers.

I also performed a DirectX update, just in case.

No change. The game still will not load. Exact same error.

These ARB errors are apparently OpenGL errors. NVIDIA's Control Panel also gives an OpenGL error and won't run.

I am now looking into installing the NVIDIA OpenGL SDK, I'll post results.

Any suggestions for me to try on the OpenGL side?

CohHelper.exe output following all of these changes is as follows:

Okay, I got to the root of the problem when I realized NOTHING OpenGL-based was working, not even the SDK components.

I have another video card in my system, a PCI card intended to drive two side monitors that run various things (stock displays, videos, performance counters, e-mail, etc).

OpenGL was not working using the latest driver (266.58) with that old card also in the system. It didn't recognize it, or support it -- in fact, that card had stopped working -- but OpenGL calls would just fail, with no clear reason why.

However, after Disabling that card in the Hardware Monitor and rebooting, everything worked perfectly fine. I am back up and running again!

Thanks for the suggestions, JS!

Something strange just happened... With the 260.99 drivers for my GTX260, everything went black, though the PC was still functioning normally, as if the display device was simply shut down. A reboot revealed no damage whatsoever.

This happened while playing around with the quality for ambient occlusion.

For that matter, when turning off shadows and/or ambient occlusion, the game does not update the settings properly untill i restart it, even though they are all immediately turned off visually. Something tells me the game is trying to render the same scene twice for whatever reason after changing those settings, slowing the game down dramatically.

Some discussion on guru3d.com on some of the latest drivers, with some causing heat issues/black screens, and problems while using anything above 4XAA.
Just two things to consider.

I recall having issues with updating/saving the graphics in game, (shadows mainly), after the issue 9 release.

My graphics card has crashed 5 times in the last two days, but it only happens when I click on a crystal to open up the mission menu in Oroburos. Strange.

Playing CoX is getting to be frustrating as it often crashes while I load missions, enter missions, exit missions, pull down menus, etc. I thought it might have been my GTX260 but it's still happening with my GTX460.

Have you guys/gals tried going to older drivers. You might try rolling back a couple releases and give that a go, using a driver cleaner too.

Also try it with ambient occlusion completly off, and or, loading in safe mode.

You may want to post in individual threads with full system specs, os, etc.

Not sure which version you need, for that fix, but older drivers are listed at nvidia's site. http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx?lang=en-us
Just go back to one or two previous versions, install one and see if your problem goes away.

After selecting your OS, and card, etc, in the "Recommended/Beta:" drop down menu, choose "all", to see the drivers listed.

And some versions for Windows XP/2000 are listed at,
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-2k_archive.html

Guru3d.com has some older drivers archived as well I think.

Since the latest patch the game crawls to a halt when any one of Desaturation Effects, Bloom, Depth of Field and Shadows are activated. Ambient occlusion works when set to 'high performance' and shadows still yields acceptable performance when set to 'low'. A little tinkering revealed that shadow map size is the biggest malefactor, resulting in a hopping 80% drop in framerate when set to 'high'. The others reduce my framerate with up to 75% each. All of them enabled leaves me crawling along at 2-4 fps whereas bvefore the patch i was running the game at 30-ish maxed out.

GTX260, 266.58 drivers, Windows 7.

I better not get the 'update/downgrade drivers' standard response from anyone. Such a massive change in framerates when the driver stays the same but the game is patched? I think that loading time change messed something up.

I too have been having video issues since the patch, not having a low FPS but getting random color screens followed by a game crash. Lowering my setting seams to give me longer periods between crashes, but doesn't fix the issue. Also updating my video drivers has not helped at all.

Still getting stuttering/hitching of vehicles, NPCs and players traveling...at random times. They stutter badly---even with Game Booster, this still happens and with Ultra turned off. In fact, altering any graphics down to performance or lower makes no difference. I've defragged and defragged with no effect. All this since I19 went from beta to live.

I did a search and saw no post about issues with playing CoH on laptops that have Nvidia Optimus. Meaning they run Intel GPU when in 2D mode and auto switch to Nvidia GPU for games and the like.
My laptop plays the game great, but, and it is a big but, in the graphics options in CoH I only have the ability to turn on graphics options that the Intel GPU can support. My guess is when CoH looks at my laptop to see what GPU is there it does not look at the GPU running the game but looks at the Intel GPU for what ever reason.
This seemms like it would be a simple fix so I hope it can be addressed soon. As more and more laptops are shipping with Optimus tech it would be in CoH favor to run well on these systems.
I am also working with Nvidia tech support to see if this can be fixed from their side but so far they are saying it is up to each program, in this case CoH, to detect the GPU and they do not know why CoH is not fully seeing the GPU.

Hope you can help.

Well, I've been out of game for the previous week. Now that I'm back, I can play no longer than 300 seconds. At any attempt to combat or open WW menus, my screen goes black as if my display were no longer receiving data. I have to hard reboot to fix the condition. Here's what I am running. This system was built locally for the sole purpose of running CoX. It has been in service since August 2007.

I'd start with updating the Realtek AC97 Audio drivers. Did you try some older video driver versions for the video card? Not familiar with Radeon graphics drivers, but there have been some issues with 'em I think.

300 secs, kind of sounds like it's heating up and something is breaking after it gets hot, so it could just be the video card biting the dust so make sure the fans are all running too.

We JUST came back to CoX after a few months away, and for the first time ever, we're having serious graphical issues.

I read all I can find - well, I read A LOT, and I see a LOT of people having similiar issues. We have the same PC, my hubby and I, it was such a good deal, we bought two. They have ATI Radeon HD 5400 video cards, and quad core processors, with Windows 7.

We're getting the Black screen flashes, especiallywhen you click on a menu, like to access info on another character, or the menu under the compass, with badges and contacts, and whatnot.

We DID try upgrading our video driver (I thought that would fix the black screen flashes), but we had to roll back to the old driver, because no matter what we tried with the new driver, CoX wouldn't launch. The launcher came up, you launch the game, and as soon as the "loading" bar popped up, the game crashed. EVERY time. Rolled back the driver, and it worked again.

I've seen various fixes mentioned, but almost all are followed by "EDIT: Nevermind, it's still doing it"

I'm posting to both say "Hey, we're having this problem too!!" and also in hopes that maybe SOMEONE has come up with some kind of working solution or reccomendation... maybe?

So, game had been running perfectly fine prior to I20, today after signing in I noticed low framerates in character select. Visibly not running as smooth as before, although I don't know how slow since I can't check framerate easily there.

After selecting a character and logging in, I get a still image of the game that occasionally updates after a few seconds, occasionally goes black for a few seconds.

Windows 7, Nvidia GTS 250. OS up to date, drivers current. Not really sure what's up here.

I tried launching in 'safe mode', and that ran speedily, albeit in an unplayable small full screen mode. (unplayable both for small and for full screen; I require a window for assistive technologies)

So I went from there.
Back to windowed mode, restart, maximized window, running smoothly.
Restored texture quality to Very High for world and character.
Particle Physics to high.
World and Character Detail to 200%, particle count approx 25000.
Environmental Reflections to ... Whoah.

Dropped me to less than 1 FPS just MOVING THE SLIDER.

It took SEVERAL clicks to cancel out of the options menu. WTF, guys?

Reverted to settings immediately before I tried enabling Environmental Reflections.

Shadows to Lowest... no problem. To Low.. back to less than 1 fps.
Water effects, same thing.
I couldn't try Ambient Occlusion, since that's disabled if you don't have Shadows to at least Low.

This is pretty messed up, guys. Ultra Mode worked FINE on this computer yesterday. As of I20, not so much.

I mean, I CAN play the game now that I've got the Ultra stuff off, but it's a lot less pretty now, and I think I remember reading somewhere about some graphical effects not showing up right on certain lower graphical settings, like Battle Maiden's patches?

EDIT: The current version on the beta server does the same thing, but a one of the earlier public beta sneak peeks worked fine for me. So something happened since then and now in I20 development.

EDIT 2: Okay, it's NOT just ultra mode. I get dropped to below 1 FPS from opening any Info window (i.e. to check someone's desc, badges, etc), the Contacts tab, a hero corps field analyst, the SG registrar, the vanguard security officer, contacts who have something for me to do..

I do NOT have trouble with vendors, WW, trainers, contacts who tell me to go somewhere else..

It seems like anything that offers a portrait triggers this. BIZARRE.

Similar problem to the above poster I have a GTS 250 as well. Game worked fine prior to I20 but since I20 every time I hit an aoe attack my framerate drops to less than 1fps I have the latest drivers and am playing on Windows 7. Even when I turn the graphical settings down to minimum the game still freezes when I try to use an AOE.

no idea what is causing this.

Followup. After conferring with a friend who was running fine on the same card with older drivers, I tried rolling back. Worked fine with ultra mode.

So I stepped forward, trying a few driver versions.. ... eventually, just for the sake of completion, I moved back to the current official (non-beta) drivers, 266.58.

... and now they work. I do not know why. I didn't even re-download the drivers, I just reinstalled the copy I still had unpacked.

What REALLY baffles me is that the problem coincided with Issue 20's release.

I dunno, folks.

Wanted to post a link to my Ouroboros crash thread here.
http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=253833

Upon crashing, the screen becomes a solid color for 30-60 seconds, before the task bar pops up an error saying "The graphics driver has recovered from a serious problem." (I tried to click on it for further information, which I intended to post here, but that only causes the message to disappear.)

I only see this error when accessing multiple Ouroboros story arcs.

I'm on Win 7-64, with an ATI 5700 graphics card using the most current (11.3 at time of this posting) drivers.

Main Hero: Chad Gulzow-Man (Victory) 50, 1396 Badges
Main Villain: Evil Gulzow-Man (Victory) 50, 1193 Badges
Mission Architect arcs: Doctor Brainstorm's An Experiment Gone Awry, Arc ID 2093

That sounds like the ATI crash bug. It may fix it if you turn off all Ultra-Mode water options.
