I'm flooded by conflicting feelings (re: Facebook)
Obviously the people who are against facebook have no RL friends. *nods*
I'm more inclined to wonder why people use Facebook, when they can go out and have real friends.

There's your ignorant assumption. It's not one or the other. Most people use Facebook to stay in contact WITH their real friends since their real friends tend to have jobs, school, and families of their own... Thus leaving very little time for meet ups at Denny's.
I visited my Facebook today, and this is in my "wall" page:
Now, as a productive being of society, my brain is screaming "what a freakin' waste of time; yet another way for Facebook to be completely annoying". But at the same time, my inner badge ***** is going: "gimme! gimme! gimme! I want to spam everybody every time I get a badge too!" It's entirely possible to add such functionality to HeroStats, or even exporting a feed from City Info Terminal. But... should we have that functionality? What do you fellow players think? Personally, I'd like the functionality as long as I can control what badges get posted on Facebook. I get about 30 badges every time I create a new character; I don't want to flood my page with all those. And exploration badges are too easy, I wouldn't care about posting those so much. But things like Master of X TF I would really like to show off. And hey, it'd be good promotion for the game. |
- Those who use Facebook and have friends who play CoH can follow along with their friends' accomplishments. There's nothing wrong with using Facebook.
- Those who use facebook and don't want to be bothered with it can simply use the Block function. There's nothing wrong with using Facebook.
- Those who don't want to use or don't like Facebook won't have to worry about it. There's nothing wrong with not using Facebook.
Note, however: HeroStats posts the badges during the verification cycle, not just when you earn them. I clicked on a couple of badges and they were posted on Twitter as if I'd just earned them. So when you're switching badges around, you'll want to stop HeroStats.

Look, haters, lovers and all in-between, recognize these words...
Whatever vehicle used, it is all the same thing.
Letters, telephones, emails, myspaces, blogs, facebook, blah blah blah...
Yes, there are differences to each and every one of these things, but they are all just tools that some may enjoy using, some may not. Some may use well, some may not. Someone's definition of how to use such a tool well or poorly may be different than another's.
It's rather simple.
Someone can defend any of these tools with how they use it for better social interaction while another could suggest that greater interactions such as you speak of can be attained without the use of facebook or any other of these popular tools...
In the end, it doesn't matter.
Myself? I like person to person interaction. Not simply in-person... but... if I want to know what's going on... or if I want to share what's going on with someone... I prefer to make the effort to do so in my own way.
I don't care if someone else prefers to do such things via any modern (Or archaic) tools... Whatever works, works.
So, don't dismiss not using any of these tools... and don't dismiss using these tools.
If you do... just realize that... you're all just tools. *drum hit*
Have a nice day.
Contact me personally if you really wish to tell me about it. I'm not going to look it up to see how your day was, haha (But I'm glad if you have other people that enjoy doing it that way, so yay for us all).

total kick to the gut
This is like having Ra's Al Ghul show up at your birthday party.
If they're going to open up the game to external applications (in a manner), I'd =MUCH= rather see an iPhone application like the Champions Companion I have.
Posting updates to Facebook? Most of my friends don't know or care what games I'm playing. But a portable tool that I could use to access my stats, game email, in-game friends status, and so on? Priceless.

But I showed them, and nobody's laughing at me now!

As for the rest of this thread...all I can say is what many others have already said: If you don't like it, turn it off and/or block it. If you do like it, enjoy.

Yep, I can just drive down the street and chum up with them. Family gatherings are easy! (NOT.)
One of my friends from high school is moving to Austin, TX (put a bid in on a house and got it last week, woohoo! posted pictures too, nice house). Another one is moving to Florida (or has already, not sure, hasn't posted in a while).
Yep, I can go out and have dinner with them. Easily. On a semi-weekly basis. From thousands of miles away. Sure.
I have one friend who regularly goes between Missouri and SPAIN. Now that's easy to get to! If it weren't for Facebook, I wouldn't know where he is at any given moment.
I have a few people on there who are my boyfriend's friends from when he lived in California.
In fact, a very large majority of my fb list does not live within "go out and have real [friends/family]" distance, mainly because of the awesomeness of the internet making the world much "smaller", so I know people from all the hell over the place.
So get the hell out of here with your "go out and have real friends" comment. Thanks very much.

All the people that respond to that "go get real friends" bring up their friends far away.
Well, it's nice of course to keep in touch with friends far away with any means at your disposal, but what about LOCAL friends?
Surely, you people must have some LOCAL friends that you can pal around with, or do you spend all your time on your computer in Facebook or whatever talking to your remote friends?
Full disclosure: I have no real friends and thus spend all my time on the computer.
Fuller disclosure: I don't really like people, so I don't want any "real" friends. Shows, doesn't it?

And we often use Facebook to arrange events.

I don't spend "all my time on my computer in Facebook or whatever talking to my remove friends", btw. Nice attempt at condescension. It takes about 10 seconds to read a status update, another 10 seconds to make a comment (if I do, which most of the time I do not), and then it's on to the next status update from someone else. All in all, it takes about 10-15 minutes to catch up on Facebook if I don't go there for a couple days. If I visit daily, it's typically just a few minutes. I visit daily so that I can do other things instead of sit on Facebook for 15 minutes at a stretch. It's part of my daily "I'm awake but I'm not happy about it" routine: breakfast with a side of internet. I don't, in fact, lose any time with my "real life" friends because I wouldn't be spending those few minutes with them anyway.

If this were to be implemented--and it's a big if--I would highly suggest whoever does it to cache and throttle updates to maybe one per day, or to put some kind of timer so that after one update, it waits 60 seconds before posting an update. After that update, it waits 300 seconds until posting another. After that, it waits 3600 before posting another. And so on. After a cycle or two without any updates, the timer resets.
In other words, it could be developed to be a bit less noisome. |
