I'm flooded by conflicting feelings (re: Facebook)

I visited my Facebook today, and this is in my "wall" page:

Now, as a productive being of society, my brain is screaming "what a freakin' waste of time; yet another way for Facebook to be completely annoying".

But at the same time, my inner badge ***** is going: "gimme! gimme! gimme! I want to spam everybody every time I get a badge too!"

It's entirely possible to add such functionality to HeroStats, or even exporting a feed from City Info Terminal. But... should we have that functionality? What do you fellow players think?

Personally, I'd like the functionality as long as I can control what badges get posted on Facebook. I get about 30 badges every time I create a new character; I don't want to flood my page with all those. And exploration badges are too easy, I wouldn't care about posting those so much. But things like Master of X TF I would really like to show off.

And hey, it'd be good promotion for the game.

I don't see the harm with the adding the ability to do so.

Would I do it though? No...only about 2 people that are my 'friends' on FB play CoH..the rest; eeh...they're not people who play games so they wouldn't know what it was about/wouldn't care.

I'm going to go with *meh*.

I'm not on Facebook.
I'm not getting ON Facebook.
I'm not a huge fan of social networking sites like this.
The only reason I'm on LinkedIn is because my job requires I be.

HeroStats feeds badge info to Twitter, which can be set to retweet to Facebook. I think that badge tweeting *might* only be in the unstable build, you'd have to ask @IneffableBob to know for sure.

I can't get the darn Twitter app to work. I gave it my username and password a bazillion times and it keeps saying, "Oops! Something went wrong: Invalid credentials Invalid user name or password". I even reset my password to make sure it was correct; no worky.

So long as I can add it to my ever-increasing list of things I'm making Facebook not tell me, I don't mind.

Then again, I don't think any of my friends have ever played CoH for more than a few months. One of them even forgot his NCSoft account name, so he created an entirely new account when he came back for another month.

Yeah, I turned off all the annoying stuff that I get from Facebook, that would just be one more thing, though I have no one on Facebook that plays CoX - I keep that one for my relatives and old classmates mostly. I use twitter for my CoX stuff.

It only reports badges earned, not verified. It also only reports periodically; I regularly see "Character earned badge and 3 other badges.", and the level up notifications can be gated, so that you don't get spammed with level 1-10 in 15 minutes - it defaults to "do not report level ups below level 10". All in all, it's not very spammy, especially since Facebook sees them all as "Twitter updates" and groups them all, and shows only one with "See X other similar posts."

The official Twitter app won't register new accounts at the moment. There's a couple other options available until they get around to fixing it.

Not only no, but nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

I already hide every stupid app that I don't care about that other people spam my page with, it'd just be another pile of junk in my hidden stuff list.

This?

That's Onyxia's head, the icon for the achievement for killing Onyxia. Each achievement in WoW has its own art, just like our badges. (Although, just like our badges, some of them get reused, or minor changes.)

Hm...I love Facebook, especially via my iPhone, it's proved excellent for having basically an Off-Topic forum for my friends around the globe, but I sometimes hate it. I just wish they'd leave the damn thing alone and stop adding ever more crap I don't need.

I'd probably use a CoH-badge feed for it, though. I'm always trying to get my friends to play, and this might help.

Eco.

Just wanted to say that if this were to be implemented--and it's a big if--that obviously, it wouldn't be for people like this. If you don't use Facebook, Twitter, or other social networking sites, it would be a non-issue. You would neither provide nor see other people's updates, of course.

I'm not knocking people like this, because god knows that I'm just about fed up enough with Facebook to quit now. I don't like spinach, you don't like Facebook, and there's nothing wrong with either one. But just as my opinion is unlikely to sway the actions of The American Spinach Society, your opinion about purely optional Facebook/Twitter integration shouldn't have any bearing on decisions around the subject. Again, I'm not saying that you should like Facebook. If you don't, go in peace.

As for the "I don't like this spam" crowd, with all due respect, I really don't have much sympathy:
  • As far as Facebook spam goes, this would definitely be among the less onerous. No one would make money off of viral posting, so unlike those stupid Zynga games, there's not a hard-sell incentive to get all of your other friends to do it too.
  • It's literally two clicks to hide all of these updates from other people that you don't want to see. Two clicks to hide all updates. From everyone. Forever.
  • Thanks to AJAX you don't even have to browse away from the page you're looking at to do the above.
  • Unlike other Facebook-sanctioned stuff, it would totally be opt-in to post messages on your own account.

I guess I just don't see what the big deal is. If you don't like it, just don't do it. Surely two mouse clicks total until the end of time isn't too much of an imposition, is it? I mean, I've hidden more stuff than I can count, and I've never said, "I shouldn't even have to do this."

Really the question isn't who doesn't like it or who wouldn't do it, but who does like it, who would do it, and if there are enough of you out there to justify putting in the time and effort to implement such a thing.

And yes, I realize that The American Spinach Society would be abbreviated as The A**. And yes, it did make me giggle thinking about it.

If this were to be implemented--and it's a big if--I would highly suggest whoever does it to cache and throttle updates to maybe one per day, or to put some kind of timer so that after one update, it waits 60 seconds before posting an update. After that update, it waits 300 seconds until posting another. After that, it waits 3600 before posting another. And so on. After a cycle or two without any updates, the timer resets.

In other words, it could be developed to be a bit less noisome.

Does nobody read?

It already exists, although via Twitter, not Facebook, thought Twitter can be set to send the output to Facebook (with some difficulty, in light of their current technical issues). And there is no spam, because the feature Tony is talking about already exists in the code. Your new character would get one post saying "Some New Toon earned the I'm Awesome! badge and 17,000 other badges." No spamming at all.

The Other Game already does this. Their setup can lead to spamming announcements if you don't change from the default settings though.

I'm in favor of it personally. Links to Facebook/Twitter/etc. should be in City itself.

The only reason I have a facebook account was to find my friend's email address.
The only reason my facebook account has any information on it is because my mother wanted to list me as 'son' on her account. -_-
