Adding a Fat slider

In response to this thread that should have been left long dead (Sorry Blue Rabbit!)

http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=169357

I feel that there should be a fat slider for customizing heroes and villians.

- Other games have already done this, so its not anything new.

- Many comic book characters are fat and therefore a fat slider would be adding to the 'make any comic book character you want' ideal.

- And I've already made fat toons and have gotten really good feedback on them. So even if someone doesn't want to look at fat in spandex, too bad, as I'm already doing so.
The addition of a fat slider will just correct the proportions, and make the jump voice; female.

So with equality for all, official fat comic book characters, and with the graphical update on its way, I see no reason as to why a Fat slider should not be in CoX.

I await your feedback!

and what about eyes like these?

I'd like to create some villain with big eyes, and maybe long teeths

/Signed for a build and muscle slider. I hate trying to make slim characters, male and female, that nonetheless have really harshly defined muscles.

Yes. God yes, PLEASE give us this. I've wanted to make fat characters since I started playing this game.

Basically, do what Champions Online did and separate muscle definition from build or model. I know it's bad karma to bring that game up, but if there's ONE thing it does right, it's this.

To be honest, men already kind of get this. You can have a muscular torso and a smooth torso, but for women, that is simply not an option. And even for men, it's a Tights texture. Anything BUT will still assume a muscular physique, like tank tops, tattoos and fingerless gloves.

For my money, I want to see, if not a bump map muscle slider, then at least several textures for basic skin to use Tops with Skin over. We can already pick skin colour. Why not skin texture?

Or rather, anything but tights OR a completely bare chest will, because there is also a "Bare chest smooth" option.

So, I guess they'll be skipping the fitness pool?

What I meant was the t-shirt, tank top, gang tattoos and Yakuza tattoos, as well as the Fingerless gloves, Flared glove, Pointed glove, Warrior gloves and Bare hands, as well as Bare feet. And legs in general, by the way. We don't have muscular/smooth options for legs.

This also doesn't work for female Tops with Skin, since we can't pick the base texture for Tops with Skin. It's whatever skin happens to... You know what? I have an idea.

For female Tops with Skin, we currently only have patterns to pick for. Could we, instead, have an option similar to how Tights work, with a choice of TEXTURE first and pattern over it? You would obviously not have the option to pick None for a pattern, and the only textures you could pick from are smooth, muscular and possibly zombie. I'd also like to see a Tops with Skin option for me, too.

Oh ye of little imagination and lack of geekyness.

Remember this big fattie?

Once he got the rabbit talisman, he could run super speed!!

Therefore, there's a perfectly logical and good explination for that ability. With the imagination of the population, someone will make it work. Just like how Samus can keep 300 missiles somewhere... :P

And thanks to all for the compliments on my toon! Cheers!

I think they added some of the current sliders after the game launched, so it's not like the avatars are totally unable to have anything added to them now - so maybe they could add some sort of bulk slider too?

Thing is with fat sliders I think that if you pick a fat character you shouldn't be able to make that character skinny in any other costume, even with the science pack.

I think all fat characters that want to slim down should be required to go into "diet mode" where logging out in the hospital (or create a gym to log out in) lets you move your slider bar to slimmer bit by bit depending on how much time you have been logged off in that location and give us some badges like "Dieter" and "Nutritionist". Of course logging out in front of an "Infront Steakhouse" automatically starts to shift the slider bar back towards the fat direction.

Actually one of the few character concepts I have involving a "fat slider" would be of a chubby girl who becomes a super-hottie when she switches over into superhero mode. This is basically just a different version of the classic "Billy Batson/Captain Marvel" transformation. If this game ever introduced a real fat slider and didn't allow us to set up both "fat" cosutmes and "thin" costumes at the same time using different costume slots then it would be a pointless feature to me.

In SWG there were these players that would make fat wookies or fat MALE humans in their underwear and dance in the cantina! EWWWW!

If memory serves me right, Jay said we weren't getting a body/fast scale slider because it would cause issues with items clipping.

That if they were to add a fat slider, all costumes from this point on would be able to take the change, but every other costume item from before this point would have to be remade. There is WAY too many things to remake since most items are usable by NPC's and playermade alts. Also, all NPC items would also have to be remade just incase they port them over to player-usable costume pieces.

Don't forget reptilian, plant, and monstrous fur. In my case it's the reptilian one I'd really be psyched about.

Reptilian, Plant and Monstrous Fur do not allow patterns with them, and even if they did, they wouldn't look like clothes the same way patterns over human skin do. That's kind of the point - to provide a different base texture for Tights with Skin options. You can actually try this out even now - grab a Reptilian Tights option and put patterns on it. You'll note how odd it looks.

Now, IF we got the tech which allows for Tops with Skin where the tops are mask overlays with ZERO transparency, rather than colour tinting for the underlying texture, THEN I would dance the happy dance, because that would be GRRRATE! But I'm not sure they'd commit to that.

I know what you are trying to do with that idea, but that would make characters like Big Bertha impossible to create. And how would you determine what costume options can be used and what can't? Someone that made their character to be a shapeshifter wouldn't be allowed to use an entire body type?

There would have to be a lot of work put into this kind of slider. All the costume options would have to be worked on to fix clipping issues. Animations would need to be adjusted. There is a lot more involved than just adding bulk to the frame of the model.

Oh my god. Oh my god yes. Jackie Chan Adventures was the best show EVER.

Samuel: Then I must have misunderstood your meaning with what you were saying. I don't understand how adding overlays for scales, fur, or plant matter would be any more difficult than adding overlays for muscles.

It's a question of base texture complexity. The texture for bare skin, by and large, simulates a uni-colour surface with a specific shape - ripped muscle. As such, putting patterns over that texture makes them resemble clingy fabric that just follows the contour of the body. a colour over a bare body "looks" like clothes, because it looks like one solid colour covering up another.

The case with pretty much every other texture, however, is not the same. All other textures include shape and and a picture below. Clothes above this texture should look as uni-colour as they do over bare skin, but patterns over these textures simply do not. Patterns are just a different tint, but the black "shape lines" and pictures of a texture still shine through. For instance, with the reptile skin, putting a pattern over it still shows the scales and the paler and darker spots on the skin. A real fabric would hide these and display a solid colour, just like it is over bare skin.

Basically, patterns over skin work because the skin texture is relatively flat. Even muscular texture is relatively flat for the purposes of colour. With more complicated textures, we need overlays.

You know, I just thought of an easy example - patters over a male bare chest will till show the nipples, so they won't look like clothes. Masks over a bare face will still show the eyebrows.

All right. Then the source of my confusion is simply that the Bare Chest and Bare Chest Smooth have all the same options for color overlays, meaning you can already have a tank top or T-shirt on a non-ripped character - though I am certainly in agreement that being able to put the more detailed, non-nipple-exposing versions on such a character would be a very good thing.
