Running Out of Character Ideas

I'm not much of a forum poster, but in times of great desperation...one must branch into new worlds. I'm a veteran of 6 years and when i first started out, this game was all about the FUN of the characters. As of late though, I found myself more focused on just getting characters to level 50, and have lost the FUN of the game.

So, im looking to restore the old feeling by trying new power combinations. I'm asking for all you forum-types to give me your Favorite character. A need a really fun one. Any archtype will do, im relatively versatile, and have access to all archtypes and DP. Mainly looking for a Hero.

Here's a list of my Current Characters:

Empathy/Dark Defender
Spines/Regeneration Scrapper
Dual Pistols/Ice Manipulation Blaster
Plant Control/Radiation Emission Controller
Invulnerability/Axe Tank
Natural Peacebringer
Electric Melee/Shield Defense Brute
Ninjas/Dark Mastermind

Personally, I find my AR/fire blaster to be my most fun character. It takes some skill to properly manage your knockback, especially when teaming, but I never get tired of seeing bad guys being blown ****-over-teakettle across the room. And then the glee inspired by lining up on the toughest guy in the spawn and hitting BuildUp+snipe followed by Full Auto. Ah, the divine carnage.

I was on a team recently with another AR blaster. It was glorious - I found myself laughing aloud.

That is all you have after 6 years!!!

(Concentrating on 1 or a few characters is cool, it just always surprises me from 4, 5, or 6 year vets)

I had almost that many on my first day. There are so many possibilities even if you don't role play. Unfortunately boredom hits most all of us at one time or another. There are a number of things you can try:

1) create unfamiliar AT / power combos (your apparent choice)
2) Spread out to a different server. New people to play with often reduce the "staleness" of old previously tried combos.
3) Run through contacts in zones you don't usually do. I find myself getting in ruts as far as which zones I level/play in. I have to force myself to go to galaxy/striga/founders/ or whatever zone I haven't played in a while. The little things you find in out of the way places go a long way for keeping the game interesting for me.
4) <last resort> take a break. A week, A month, 6 months, or whatever you need. I find after taking various voluntary and enforced breaks the character ideas start flowing back in like sweet wine.

Since none of that really answered your question, here is my opinion. Blaster, energy, fire, or electric (anything but the weapons sets). Lots of damage(and kb with the energy) and lacking just enough survivablity to make it stickys sometime on whether your about to fill a hospital bed or not.

That is just my 2 cents with out knowing anything of your playstyle. What you find fun and exciting maybe completely different from mine.

Now come on Dave, if all i had was 8 characters after 6 years, It'd be like not playing the game at all! lol. Those were just some of my latest creations. The game is so very fun because of the shear capacity of customization options.

I appreciate the post though, unfortunately I've arrived at all those solutions already, including purchasing all the boosters and doing all the TF's i could muster.

As I write the post i'm creating a Stone/Stone Tank. Looks interesting. =D

No problems, wish I could of helped more. I agree with you about the customization 100% and I hope the tank works out for you.

I try to do this but on some of the zones the bank missions keep opening up the exact same contact every time. I'm sick of Radio in Port Oaks, gimme anyone else! I finally gave up and use AE until I can hit Cap, and as a benefit get better rewards since enemies under 10 don't drop recipes but in AE I still get tickets for them.

Hero side I have the same trouble, somehow I never get contacts in skyway, just go from kings row to steel again and again. I had to deliberately stop running Faultline. I love that place but I do it too often. =)

In terms of fun, a big thing for me was starting to read all the missions, clues, and NPC descriptions. There's quite a lot of cool stuff in there. While the actual actions are similar knowing the story makes the missions more interesting and fun. Doing the arc (Harvey Mailor I think) where you learn about the men in the Carnival of Shadows was pretty creepy. And after doing the cape mission and ready the background history of the Rikti War my first Lady Grey task force was really tragic.

If I remember correctly don't the contacts you get correspond directly to your origin even after your first few in Atlas/Galaxy?

I believe I was told this a long time ago and have gone down to the next origin on the list(from the previously made character) every time I make a new character because of it.

In my opinion, I would suggest trying out a Claws/Willpower Scrapper. Based on my experience, it was an extremely fun trip to 50. In my experience there wasn't a "slump" that some characters face in the 30s. It was pure shred the entire way.

Since you're a six-year veteran, I assume you know or at least have an idea on how to place knockback. This is almost essential for a Claws/Willpower. Using Shockwave, you can herd a group into a corner, jump onto the other side of them and use Shockwave to knock them down while still keeping them in range for Rise To The Challenge. Quick and easy mitigation while sustaining your godly Regen.

Keep in mind though, you cant Tank as well as Tankers, at least not until you have IOs. Based upon my Miles Per Kill (MpK), to the Claws/WP, IOs are like Superman's sunlight. A little crack boost to up the MpK. Except this crack doesn't wear off and leave you scratching your neck. I slotted for Positional Defense, and I'm at (I believe) 20ish percent to Melee and Ranged, and AoE I dont really care about. This is entirely up to you. You could slot for Typed Defense to give your Claws/WP an edge against a certain Enemy Group, or go all around like I did.

As for survival, it's pretty amazing what I can survive. I try to serve a sort of "backup Tanker" purpose, should the Tanker lose some aggro to trigger-happy Blasters, etc. But keep in mind, you cant take Alpha Strikes too well (which is what the Blasters are for). After the Alpha, you can hold yourself pretty well even without IOs.

All in all, it's a pretty fun combo with few cons and lots of pros. Obviously Robots and Rikti Drones are going to be a pain in your behind. Freakshow as well, I think (Correct me if I'm wrong). But Carnies are going to be your gold mine. For whatever strange reason Lethal damage shreds them (no pun intended), so once you get in the 40s, aim for those missions as much as possible.

A note on Fitness. It's not "necessary," but it definitely helps. I picked up Health at 24, and Stamina at 35, and never looked back.

Of course, the above is mostly my own opinion, and YMMV

Seven years of heroism. Seven years of friendships. Seven years of saving the world. Seven years of virtuous selflessness.

You will return, for you are the mighty City of Paragon, the City of Heroes.

While I find the survivability of the Blaster AT to be just...sad (and probably why I prefere defenders/scrappers/corruptors over blasters)...I have found Dual Pistols to be a fun set.

With other blast sets I feel like I'm just repeating the same motion over and over...with Dual Pistols? No way!

What looks fun to me (and maybe worth trying out for you) is a DP/EM Blaster. Yeah, it's a popular combo to use with DP, but besides the obvious advantages of good power picks from /EM, I find it's a good pick because you can pick up even more of your Primary. That's it's biggest draw imo.

The Dominator AT is one of the best in the game, and plays quite differently from any other AT. They have the most potent control capability, powerful melee attacks, powerful ranged attacks, and solid AoE attacks. I find them great fun to play due to their vast array of capabilities, and they excel in every one of them.

Character concept can range from a witch (mind/Fire-- my main Dominator), to a futuristic cyborg able to manipulate gravity (Gravity/Energy or Grav/Electricity).

Play a Dominator!

Skip anything with Grav control/ and probably Ice control/, /Electric is a nice choice as is /Fire, /Thorns and /Energy.

Earth Control is pure awesome on a dom. We'll soon get Electric Control with Going Rouge so maybe hold off on /Elec Assault until then? Bottom line, play some doms and get the feel for it so when the new awesome comes out, you'll be ready to rock the power drains to their fullest!

I think my most fun characters are (in no particular order):

Cold/Ice Defender
Fire/Fire Blaster
Energy/Energy Blaster
Fire/SR Brute
Dark/Sonic Defender

I have found my newest creation (and only female) to be a hoot on small teams even in my low 20's. An Earth/Thermal controller.

Dragon-King First level 50 -- Fire/Nrg Blaster
(and to many alts to mention)
Protector

Don't forget the redside unlockable contacts! It's easy to forget about Veluna Lunata, Tarixus, Crimson Revenant, the Slot Machine, etc. and those are some fun arcs.

AR/Sonic Corruptor. According to your list you don't have either of these powersets, or indeed a corr at all, so it might be a fresh experience for you

As a 5 year vet and long time sufferer of Altitis I've found the most fun toons for me to play, and the ones I stick with the longest, have all been because;
A. I really liked the concept I had for them, name, costume, powers.
This is the number 1 reason I'll keep playing a character.

B. The combination of powers just 'gelled' so well that you forget your playing. The journey to 50 becomes secondary to the thrill of figuring out new strategies and creative ways to do things.

My top 3 would be:

Fire/Ice blaster - You want survivability on a blaster then this is it.
Not much in the ST damage department but a beast with AOE.
Shiver will be a game changer, making even bosses no challenge.
Ice Patch means Rain of Fire actually has some use.

Energy/Energy blaster - Close 2nd place in terms of durabilty. Once you get the hang of how to use KB to protect yourself and teamates that is.
This build gravitates towards being a boss killer. With amazing ST damage but nearly non-existant AOE.

Earth/Storm Controller - Storm can be a daunting set to get the feel of but once you do the powers are terrific. Add to that the wonderful utility of Earth control and you end up with a well rounded beast of a controller.
Very useful on teams. Not so much solo though.

As an aside; In your 6 years in Paragon what build is your all time favorite and why?

Maestro Mavius - Infinity
Capt. Biohazrd - PCSAR
Talsor Tech - Talsorian Guard
Keep Calm & Chive On!

Gravity/Storm controller or Storm/Electric Defender. Thematic, great SFX, fun powers, good synergy but not FOTM.

Kinetics/Sonic Defender! Kinetics just for the pure flexibility it allows your build, the potential for noticably helping out a team (with practice it's actually fun too) and 7/9 powers benefit you also. And then /Sonic for the secondary -res effect, the interesting soft control options (compliments Kinetics well, IMO) and the sounds! I never get bored of mine

Defiant EU
Quaver: Kinetics/Sonic Defender
Semiquaver: Sonic/Kinetics Corruptor

My two favorite characters are my Archery / Energy Blaster (built for perma-Boost Range, Hover, and some Ranged defense) and my Plant / Storm Controller. Since you already have a Plant / Rad I'd suggest an Archery / Energy... the amount of range you can get is amazing and it's a fun, effective blast set.

Cascade, level 50 Blaster (NRG/NRG since before it was cool)
Mechmeister, level 50 Bots / Traps MM
FAR too many non-50 alts to name

Yeah, your list of characters doesn't show Earth or Ice Control (somewhat similar in playstyle) and Storm is conspicuously absent. Earth/Storm just leaps out at me.

I'd second the warshade; many different ways to build them also. But I'd go with a triform.

Spines/ D A lvl 50 Scrap, stone/wm lvl 50 tank, Kat/reg lvl 50 Scrap
Grav/Kin lvl 50 Cont, Fire/Enegry lvl 50 Blast
Warshade lvl 50, PB lvl 39, nightwidow lvl 50, crab lvl 42
plant/thorns lvl 50 dom, ice/fire lvl 40 dom, grav/nrg lvl 41 dom

I woudl third a Warshade. They are a bit of an aquired taste, but for those who understand them nothing else compares*

*Fun wise

Never managed to unlock slot machine in time. Tarixus and Crimson I've done quite a bit. They are good. Veluna Lunata I know I did once, but I don't remember it. I'm working on the unlock for my new brute =)
