And don't forget that this change was followed shortly (a few months later, IIRC) by Enhancement Diversification. Talk about insult on injury! At least that's how the players perceived it--boy, were the forums hot for a while there.

For a while? This suckers gonna be nuclear for at least another decade after the fallout from ED...

I've yet to see any forum go as insane as the 1st few hours after that announcement was made. Poor Cuppa.

OP - Didn't realize you could... kinda cool actually, looking into your own past. Wonder if I can find my 1st post.

just 6 slot all your shields..no one used end costs..and one slotted acc

Those were some sad times and bad memories.

I started playing another MMO around that time, and it was my primary game for a year and a half. I didn't start logging on almost daily here until after i11 -- really, more than anything else, it was Cimerora that brought me back.

Well, that, and the raid politics of the other MMOs endgame.

They left too much flexibility in the system. Probably thought they were being nice, letting players take a build in whatever direction it could go. Then it hit them in the face like a wet flounder: The vast majority are powergamers. Forget taking an idea in a new direction, someone put extra rockets on my rockets. Oh Yeah, and can I get 2 foot of body armor in all locations, please?

I got into the game, lets see 33 Month vet badge, carry the 1, errr, around June 07. So this was after all of those New World Order shifts. To be honest I never got into I/Os until about a year ago, except for the random Fly+Stealth I used on about every flyer I have. Now I have a tricked out Brute with all the sets I can cram on him. Given how he operates, I try to imagine changing him to a non ED build, and I think he would be much worse off. Now, granted, the rest of my stable of alts would love it, because they are not tricked out nearly as much. (There are only so many purple sets LOTG, and Procs one individual can afford!)

Still and all I think ED has probably been a good thing. Even my farmer toons run better when I start spreading the enhancement love around more powers. Although, of course, for one or two buildouts you could really abuse it. Probably why tankers were one of the most vocal. A tanker (in my opinion) is already a pretty min/max build. Lopsided, although not quite as lopsided as blasters. Min/max builds love it when you can take it to an even greater extreme. It is just the nature of the beast.

Days before ED struck I was a bit worried about how things would be but then on the day of ED I Invuln tanked a lvl 52 Neuron for a team and no one was defeated throughout that evening and I have never looked back since. The game did get slightly more challenging but not impossible to play.

I think the only thing that I really miss about the old Invulnerability numbers is that they allowed for some variety within the set itself. You could go all out strict tanker and slot your primary to the max, you could opt for Min/Max slotting on your primary that gave you reliable resistance while allowing you to start concentrating on your offense early or you could ride the bleeding edge with a Perma-Unstoppable build. I even had a fairly successful defense-centric build that relied on Invincibility backed up by Tough, Weave and the Invy passives.

I was one of the ones that was furious about ED. Being an old school blaster that was stuck in the 1acc 5dam mindset I was unable to see any
good coming from this change.

Now, looking back, I realize it was probably one of the most fundamental changes to this game. It opened up so many new possibilities.

The one sad thing for me was that I shelved my Illusion/FF controller
due to the reduction in Flash's duration and mag.
It changed the way he played so radically, I just never went back.
He's still sitting there, perched forever at 22, hoping one day I'll
'Get over it'

Who knows what we'll be looking back on 2 years from now.

Been waiting since i6 to revamp to defense to work correctly, just drop the attribute already and replace it with % for block, parry and dodge. Certainly with current system it is doable.

My invuln scrapper was hit very hard, and so much that I stopped playing it until IO's. It sat at lvl 36 for a very long time and was nearly deleted on many occasions. The ONLY reason I didnt delete it is because of the Celebrant badge.

Did Fiery Embrace really used to have a 30 second duration? I don't remember that at all! Man, that makes me even sadder about Fiery Embrace. Poor Fiery Aura still feels like it's been kicked around for the old farming days.

Sure, it's a solid set, but Fiery Embrace and Burn still make me a little sad.

I started playing during I8, so I wasn't around Pre ED. To me, it seems ED was a preparation for the eventual release of IO sets. Would anyone agree, or am I way off base?

ED made IO sets viable. Was it done as preparation? I don't know.

ED didn't bother me too much when I actually gave it some thought. Other nerfs, on the other hand, are a different story.

no it wasnt ..cause what happened was they tried to save face when they realized how badly affected people were so they made up a new system called "skills" which were to make you more powerful and then the question came out to well why do that when you just nerfed us.

skills never happened..they annouced it but by the time closed beta came up they trashed the entire concept MUCH later on giving into i.o.'s

some say skills and i.o's were the same..but i remember reading about both and they really wernt that simular ..there was never gonna be an auction house or anything.

heres the original posting for skills btw..youll notice its not as close off to i.o's as people think.

this system actually was talked about before the issue 5 tank nerf ( was suppose to go live in issue 4)so im thinking they were suppose to go hand and hand possibly.but like i said.

i believe thats why states made up fury to give to tanks in the first place to help with no skills and a giant tank nerf..but as we all know then changed his mind with issue 6 being along came a spider.

Skills are City of Heroes' answer to the ubiquitous MMO crafting system - except they're totally different. Characters will be able to specialize in one of four different skill trees: Detective, Science, Communication, and Scholarship. They can further specialize in various areas of expertise, such as Forensics or Security for the Detective tree. Skills are level-independent and wholly optional; your character will be able to interact with myriad objects during the game, at which point he, (Ed. note: or she ), can attempt a series of skill checks. Success brings new objectives or perhaps some extra experiance. For example, succeeding at a Security check in a bomb infested building might reveal the explosives on the mission map.

Skills are learned and improved by studying at universities throughout Paragon City. You'll earn temporary, expendable skill boosts during missions; these are somewhat similar to inspirations but can also be converted into wisdom, which is used to add permanent skill boosts at the aformentioned universities. As with enhancements, you'll find generic skill improvements as well as stronger, more focused upgrades alon the lines of dual- and single- origin enhancements. The only skill you'll need now, though, is the patience to hold out for all this good stuff.

heh this is kinda odd and shows why so many get got mad back then

issue 4 was released on Wednesday, May 4, 2005. thats where skills was suppose to happen to make us "better"

http://wiki.cohtitan.com/wiki/Issue_4

issue 5 was the big tank nerf on Wednesday, August 31, 2005

http://wiki.cohtitan.com/wiki/Issue_5

however on September 14th 2004 states says tanks have too many issues and gives annouces fury to all tanks happiness

http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=112261

now how odd it is that with no buffs from fury or skills and only 6 to 8 months later posi and states both say that we arent challeneged enough so there requires a huge nerf to the set to make you feel special

i know issue 5 had a ton of changes to scale defense and all..but i still never saw the logic in the nerf to begin with..would love to get posi's feedback on it onto why they changed their minds

Developers have stated that ED and GDN needed to happen, as characters were far too powerful, and that the developers really didn't have "anything more to give us," given that setup (I honestly can't remember who said this, but it was said... I particularly remember that phrasing). The IO system was a long time in coming, but it could only have come into play with those major adjustments to the game.

There have been some nerfs and adjustments to the game that I disagree with, but ED and GDN weren't among them. The only bad thing there was how they were brought out to the population.

...umm yes. They were pretty good before Castle tweaked the set a few issues back, and now they're quite good. They only never recovered if you're going to compare them to the pre-ED and GDN days, but no one is quite at that level, either.

They've never seemed powerful enough to me.

Out of all the changes, though, the aggro cap annoyed me the most. I miss both stumbling upon and being the center of Perez Park Parades.

Of course, I also miss fighting Lusca.

Invulns were relatively fine in a herd fast scenario where they can use mobs to build defense. Take that out and you can end up with some attackers sticking to -def ranged attacks turning the Invuln into practically a res set with a long recharge. With some team mates a basic Invuln could be fine but with some team (erm what word could I exchange here?) oh "members" Weave was a bit of a must have. Invulns lacked fun with members preventing potentially ascertainable survivability.
