White space after 3/17/2010 patch

Same issues, Nvidia GeForce 9600 GT

I patched once and am trying again, it didn't work the firs time.

Had the white space. Tried verifying files twice to no effect. Third time updater fixed three TexWorld pigg files: v1, v2 & SW. Works fine now.

Deleting those pigg fines worked fine for me until I logged off and rebooted, the problem seems to have come back, just tried deleting the piggy files again but when I logged back into the game the white walls were back *sighs deeply*.

This is amusing and possibly counterproductive to everyone else's troubleshooting:

Logged on about three hours ago -- ATI 4800 Series video card. Downloaded today's patch, and everything was FINE. Ran around Talos, Wentworth's, base killing time and talking to friends. Saw nothing out of the ordinary and logged off after an hour or two.

Just logged back on, updater seemed to download MICROpatch or fixed file or something in about two seconds flat -- no, I wasn't paying attention because I wasn't expecting this catastophic texture failure. Same big white spaces that everyone else is reporting. Came to forums, verified files, problem persists.

Why in the world was it fine before and then screwed up after I logged off?

Same thing just happened to me - I had the problem, deleted the piggs and it went away, then I logged off for a while. I came back in game and everything was white again - it looks to me like some process that is running after we leave the game is corrupting the files as I did NOT see a file update occur between the time it worked and the last logon.

Trying to fix things again but I am also going to open an in game ticket.

EDIT: Looking at my piggs directory I notice that I no longer have a TexWorldV1.pigg, TexWorldV2.pigg or TexWorldSW.pigg file in my regular CoX directory although my CohTest directory has them. Doing a file check doesn't replace them, which it did before.

EDIT2: So, I deleted one of the other PIGG files, forcing it to recheck them all -it replaced the one I deleted and the 3 I was missing before, clearing up the problem. AT this point it looks like something is deleting one or more of the trouble files (TexWorldV1.pigg, TexWorldV2.pigg and TexWorldSW.pigg) after exiting the game. I backed up those files for the time being in case the problem occurs again, I would suggest other folks do the same. I am going to bug this in game.

Well that was kind of comical. Logged into Outbreak on a new Ice/Ice tanker, and it looked like a winter wonderland

Deleted the afforementioned .pigg and am anxiously anticipating the results.

As an aside, I noticed the quality of the "Body" generic green pre-costume-application model during character creation was very ... quirky. I don't know quite how to explain it other than that it had multiple little square blocks throughout popping up and fading, which is probably related to this.

Oddly I wasn't having any trouble earlier (Logged in my mastermind, ran a few missions, logged out for a couple of hours, and came back to Outbreak In Winter)

Edit: Interestingly, it looks like I'm missing texWorldSW.pigg on my live folder, which is present in my test folder (Not in closed beta, so I haven't been logging onto the test server. I've just been keeping it updated for a smaller open beta download )

I think that something in the updater program or whatever is causing some deletion of these files - mine was fine until I logged out, and when I logged in later on one more more of the textures pigg files was corrupted and had to be re-DLed.

My decision is to take a night off and see if they can get the patch patched.

I'm strongly drawing in on this myself. I dropped in the missing file which the updater refused to download before, and now says it's going to take an hour to "fix" (and by fix, it probably means corrupt again ), so popcorn and my collection of "So bad they're good" movies is looking better and better.

This should be fixed on our end now, please let us know if anyone sees it happen again.

Thanks for your patience,

Know what's funny about all of this? It wasn't part of any preparation for i17, but just to introduce a code to kill out a farm. Not that I condone extreme farming, but honestly I think the devs should put a little more focus on game quality and a little less into worrying about people power levelling. There are always going to be farms, and people using exploits to gain certain advantages. It's part of any game. Live with it. Let them do as they will, stop it when you can, delete the farms as they appear, but stop messing with the game structure just to try and nerf them. It always seems to cause some sort of stability issue, and honestly in the end you end up with more players angry that you bugged their game than those angry that you nerfed their farm. Just some food for thought.

Interesting read. Not that you asked, but I feel the complete opposite. A small group of people caused this, and it wasn't the devs.

A small group of people who weren't employed by NCSoft published a patch which broke graphics for some users? Okay.

Actually, the funny part is the Development and Community teams reacting to a) tell us a workaround, and b) fixing it on their end. Every other game I've played would leave it on the "to-do" list.

Ten years later, it MIGHT get fixed. By accident, when they introduced the bug where the clouds actually fall out of the sky and kill you.

Eco.
THIS!

On my home machine, the lag has made the game pretty much unplayable.

Have tried many tweaks of options, etc.
No help

Is there a thread somewhere here about a lag problem in the last day or so?

just to let it be known that not everyone agrees with you here. If this bug is a result of the farm nerf, I'm happy to put up with the bug till its fixed, which I assume won't be long.

I don't mind them closing up holes and exploits. That's part of their job. But patching the server to plug the hole while introducing bugginess and glitchiness is poor performance.

I wasn't using the exploit. I really don't care if others were. I expect the devs to stop the exploit. But please don't mess up the rest of the game in the process.

Well, like I said, I don't exactly condone the farms, but I would rather be able to play my game without all the stability issues. I say let them farm. They don't affect me so I just don't worry about it. As for the devs telling us workarounds, how many replies have you seen that said the workaround doesn't work? Yeah, really fixing the problem guys.

You are aware that the exploit allowed someone to level 1-50 in under an hour, yes?

It wasn't a minor bug. It was a game debilitating exploit. The longer it existed on the servers, the more people would know about it. You could fill up your entire roster of 12 characters per server and get them to 50 in under a week. Then what do you do? Can't roll another alt, so you cancel your account before you've even paid for the first month.

I have a different take on some of this, and a few folks might agree with me. I LOVE my level 50s. I play them a lot. There are still tons of things to do with them even after 6 years...
It's the best of both worlds to me. I can run them at full power, or team with any lower friends and still have loads of fun! Just going from 0-50 in the game is not the end all for why I play. Perhaps that is why I have never once been bored, even when I solo for long stretches. I made it a point to give my toons a personality and a storyline...I don't farm them to 50 in a big hurry, although I don't really care if others play that way. In my heart, I think there are many players, like myself who come here for the fun and friendships that have been made, and to enjoy the little characters that took work to create. I know there are people who jump from game to game...I am not one of those. I really don't understand the need to create a toon and have it at 50 in an hour unless it's for 'monitary' purposes.
I am not a programmer and can't imagine the tremendous effort it takes to keep CoX up and running. The devs must have a reason for allowing/deleting certain aspects of the game. At times, this has caused uproars and resulted in players quitting. I look at these things as adjustments I must make, and I always did like a challenge...so far so good. People should be able to play the way they want. If it doesn't suit them, there are many other games out there that might be more fun. As for me, I will continue to stay here and can't wait to see the new surprises around the bend. Look how far we've come since Issue 1..oh my gosh! (It's like going from horse and buggy to men walking on the moon, LOL!) Bring on the new issues, perks, changes and other things. I'll continue to have fun and watch players come and go. This game has provided a real learning experience for me, and I have a rich history in it. I may not always agree with what the Devs do, but I am glad they work hard at doing it.
I really didn't mean to be this long-winded, but just wanted to share one long time player's views with others, for what it's worth.
