Can the fallout of Cryptic's business practices hurt CoX?
In a word? No.

If Cryptic out right sells the engine, I am sure NCsoft has first purchase options in their contract.

Personally, Paragon Studios should either make there own engine or dumb Cryptics for a better Engine.

Without seeing the contract, anything on this line is purely speculation.

If the contract allows Cryptic to sell or pull away the Cryptic engine and cause the demise of CoH as a result, then NCSoft's lawyers need to be fired.
GG, I would tell you that "I am killing you with my mind", but I couldn't find an emoticon to properly express my sentiment.

My question and concern is, with Paragon Studio's licensing the Cryptic engine, what happens if Cryptic flames out? Does CoX have a fixed number of years for the license? What happens if Cryptic resells the engine to another company? Can CoX become collateral damage as a result of Cryptic's own distribution and marketing mistakes, or even their desperation or spite?

The City of Heroes Community is a special one and I will always look fondly on my times arguing, discussing and playing with you all. Thanks and thanks to the developers for a special experience.
Aren't NCsoft getting a new engine anyway? I'm sure I read somewhere they were. Something to do with needing a better one for some of the things they want to implement in this awesome game. To be honest I thought a new engine was coming along with Ultra Mode.

We got this new Engine that allows us to do 3x more stuff then we could do with CoH1, Plus we can now add even more powers to game, offer all sorts of unique maps, improved gameplay & QoL, plus have that this great(insert something)stuff to do now.
You wouldnt be like, Sqee?

The programmers have patched the underlying Cryptic engine so hard, that what we're playing now can be considered CoH2.

As many have probably heard, Cryptic has had a poor track record these past few months with....client relations, most recently with a special STO deal that allegedly got pulled. That's not what I want to discuss, so no details about it, please.

There are still so many people who seem to think that Cryptic still has something to do with CoX development (beyond the engine) that a big hit to their rep could wrongly tar CoX in the eyes of the misinformed masses.

Then I dont see why you couldnt port said character over to CoH2, but make em say lvl 1, 1 lvl for every 10 you earned in COH1. But limit this to 1 character. This would give incentive for folks to go into CoH2 with there beloved toon I guess.
But beyond that, I think flat out fresh start with whole new world/revamp Paragon City/Revamped Rogue Isles, etc.. would be nice. With the Story moved foward heavily, so perhaps things are even more different.

Dear god. The first page and it switches to an entirely different topic.
Bad Voodoo by @Beyond Reach. Arc ID #373659. Level 20-24. Mr. Bocor has fallen victim to a group of hooded vigilantes who have been plaguing Port Oakes, interfering with illegal operations and pacifying villain's powers. He demands that revenge is taken on these miscreants and his powers are returned! You look like just the villain for the job. Challenging.
So your trying to tell me, if they said, Listen!

But until they actaully do so, I'm not even letting my brain consider that option. Way too much speculation.

Consider Jack, or Atari, don't have their iron grip of abysmal fail over this game I don't see how it could blow back onto NCSoft or Positron.
Although there were a surprising number of people on those CO boards that thought the people making CO were the ones who made CoX. Which they weren't. I was like..."uhh, no, the people who made CoX are still the devs of CoX. They left Cryptic."
Pure speculation, but I wouldn't worry about this. NCSoft, would probably have licensed the use of the engine for City of Heroes in perpetuity for just this reason.
|
CO was an uncertainty...if it tanked and tanked HARD (like it was such a failure they had to shut it down within the first six months aka Tabula Rasa...) then Cryptic would have probably been dumped by Atari and gone into liquidation, this was a very real possibility at the time of the NCsoft purchase.
I imagine NCsoft actually have 'first dibs' on owning the CoH engine if Cryptic do go into liquidation and lets face it...they're probably more of a force to reckon with than Atari especially thanks to the big success of Aion out east (they launched at a time when WoW was suffering major problems in China to the point where the servers had been shutdown due to fighting over who had the rights to run the game so that netted them a sizeable chunk...was 3 million people at the time IRC).
Atari meanwhile has been facing financial difficulties for quite some time (almost all their games have been poorly recieved and sold poorly, they have a bad reputation among gaming circles unfortunately) and the speculation is that the company is only just about treading water. They needed STO to be a big hit but that looks somewhat unlikely due to the rushed release (the game is fun but is basically half finished) so the future of Atari isn't really certain itself.
However Atari's situation is merely financial speculation at the moment.
I find it a shame about Atari, t'be honest. Ever since Transformers for PS2 (the one based on Armada, NOT the Bayformers game) I've liked them. That game was beyond just good.
Still, if it ever came down to us or them? Well, durr

Cryptic did all the damage they could to the CoH brand when they were running the show here, now they're irrelevant.

So, in effect, I would agree. The current engine would be CoH2 CoH1.5 at the very least.
There I was between a rock and a hard place. Then I thought, "What am I doing on this side of the rock?"
Not really a "fun" topic per se, but one worthy of thinking about.
