@Bin Man
If you read through the thread you will find that yes, the thread started out with the concept of the box. However as DR said, it is more about the box. Had you read the entire thread or atleast post 596 (on page 30) you would have seen more of the entire picture...

@Noble Fox. Then the solution is simple. Change the server lists so that both NA and EU updater points to the same list. One list of 15 servers. If GR would do this then there would be no need for an extra set of boxes (to the EU). Unfortunatly it seems the company will still insist on dividing the playerbase into two communities .

Post #596 by Wondering Fury really sums up the thread!

Unfortunatly the box will have a code in it for CoX NA, not EU. We would get the box, but not be able to apply it to our account so still have to pay for GR too. While this would solve the problem of not having updated disks (my personal concern. Last night alone I had a 3gb download! I need to install it on a new machine, I'd hate to think of the size of that download.) it's a very expensive way to go about it.

I mean I love White Castle Hamburgers, but every time they try to open one in Montana, it fails within 3 months so they've stopped trying, and now we can only get the frozen storebought version of the burgers. Does this mean I am in the right suggesting that they keep a branch open here anyway despite the horrendous losses each time, or should I be happy that I can at LEAST get the frozen version still?

You say CoH is taking a big dump on Europeans? Fine.

Let's bear in mind that Europeans actually dumped on them first by making every attempt to distribute CoX an utter failure.

Good luck with e mailing and asking this lot for anything.

I don't think you need to download it all over again (it's been a few months since I migrated to a newer PC, so if I'm wrong there are smarter people here to say so), iirc all you need to do is copy your COH folder. If you have a portable hdd, a cd/dvd writer, or a memory stick with enough capacity, its a simple drag and drop. When you run the updater on your new machine, the game will pick up as normal.

So, if I'm right and that is the case, one way to get around not having the up-to-date game on disk is to periodically back up your game folder onto dvd or something - maybe after there's been a big download,or whenever's suitable.

Yes, this is correct. Copy it or burn it to a DVD and then copy it across to the new machine and it'll ask where you want to install to, just say the same folder.

I did run into some weird Permissions error (same one that prevents me from running test) but it eventually worked (I installed to a Games folder under my user folder).

Still no idea how to get Test working on Windows 7 / Vista though, keep getting a Permissions error regardless of the foldername.

Yeah, I had seen this somewhere, and am happy to do that. But next month or whenever I'll have to download GR which is likely to be huge too. And I'm lucky I have another machine with it on. If I had a crash and had to reinstall? I know I should back up etc, but I like disks! I'd rather install from a disk than down load GR.

Ohh.. I had a permissions problem getting the NA Test set up on Vista last week...I can't quite remember how I got around it off-hand*, but I'll take a look tonight and see if I can work out what I did.

(*I think I might have had to install outside of the Program Files directory, but don't quote me until I've checked)

Too late

Tried that myself earlier on in the week. Copied to c:\users\[username]\Games\CoHTest\

* ran it and pointed the installer at the same folder but got the Permission error. Even tried "Run as Administrator" but no cigar. Has me a bit stumped. My actual CoH client is running happily in c:\users\[username]\Games\CoH\ though.

Another side-affect that was always going to exponentially go crazy with updates and GR. I've made this argument countlessly, I really dislike having to save it, especially when you have to update the CD, ignoring external hard-drives, frequently or make another CD....

This isn't really a complaint I can make in foresight of the other problems but It'd be nice to have a brand new copy. It reminds me of installing Guild Wars with the CD I got the first week it came out, and updating it.... God I abhored that moment of updating, with all 3 campaigns.

I think I might have thrown it on at C:\CoHTest, avoiding as much of what Windows thinks of as its property as possible; I'll check tonight.

That's odd. I have thatvery same structure in Windows 7 and it works a treat. I did have some trouble, iirc, but eventually I think I went back to Bridger's very first "How to..." guide for setting up the Test server and somehow got it working. Maybe you're missing something very, very small...

I'll try it on my d: (the old hard disk, now a FAT32 formatted data drive for use on both OSes) and see if that works. Since it's Test anyway it doesn't really matter that it's on the lesser disk in the laptop.

...just confirming for you Carni - that is where I stuck it after 30 minutes of trying to convince Windows that I do in fact have permission to use my own sodding machine...and giving up.

Cool, I'll try the d: so and see if that works.

Wretched damn thing.

Excalty. Everyone still thinks that everyone in EU has Broadband to a great speed. Not everyone has a fast broadband in the EU for downloading and updating situations.
Example is my mt8 (not in UK) Takes 8 hours (give or take) to download a new issue- and she has average PC with a average connection where she lives.
