When does the game get good? (or Do you like lvls 1-20?)
QR:
Praetoria itself might only be level 1-20, but they're definitely at least adding some more end-game content as well.
As for why they're focusing on 1-20 in Praetoria, I recall some statistics given a while back stating that the modal level range for characters across the game was 30-35. And people have been asking since Issue 7 for new ways to level up Villains from the start (even though that's when Burke was added) and even longer for Heroes. I don't mind the act of playing a new character from 1-20, but since I've done everything in that level range a dozen times or more on each side, I welcome the new shinies.
So, it's certainly not a bad thing at all that they're trying to breathe more life into the early levels of the game. Perhaps a push to add enough new content to level from 1 to 30 would be even better, but 1-20 is definitely a good start.

well, not everyone can double box and/or afford a second account
(personally i wouldnt get a second account, makes no sense to me except i could PL myself without having to have a friend do that t oget past my first 20 lvls) |
(The worst part, oddly enough, is starting over again on Vet Rewards. It's amazing how quickly you get used to things like City Traveller... )

Also, Teaming vs. Solo, but I don't feel sorry for us soloists. We get to keep all our drops, rather than splitting it randomly.
Possible to get 1-20 in 3 hours solo, i.e. not teamed, and single box?
I highly doubt it.

Levels 6-20 feel like a chore to me because, if I want a travel power and stamina ASAP, then 5/8th of my power choices will be spent on boring utilitarian powers (yay... health) instead of sexy new attacks, controls, debuffs, etc. I've taken up using Ninja Run instead of a travel power which helps some but they're just not a lot of fun.
Add to it the Fed-Ex missions which make me want to just do police scanners rather than run three zones over to talk to someone and be sent three more zones over yonder. As a result, the early game mission arcs go largely unplayed by me which is kind of a shame. I haven't fought Dr. Vahz for years...
If I've played either of the sets before, or have had long time observational experience, especially with an "easier" set, then skipping to around 27 is what I usually do. At that point, I can start frankenslotting to get the most out of my still-too-few slots, I have 4 new powers to look forward to, I have plenty of slots to look forward to, and I have all of the bread and butter powers that I need to play without annoyance.
If it's a set I haven't tried before, or tried and didn't like, then I'll probably grind it out. Taking the time to learn how some powers actually affect mobs (a description with numbers doesn't always tell when the optimal timing is and such) is very important to being able to succeed, and just watching someone else, or thinking that you played a set like it, isn't enough. Broadsword and Katana are virtually identical as far as how their powers progress (Single, Single, Melee Cone, Build Up, Def buff, Taunt, PBAoE, Strong Single, Strong Small Cone) but each one has a drastically different feel just based on recharge timers, over all DPS, and different Burst values. I know my BS will take them out in a few hits, but I also know my Kat will be able to stand and swing for ages and maintain higher DPS for AVs and such. Taking the time to grind each up gave me a better appreciation for what each could do, as well as helping me to learn what I *like* to do with each.
So yeah, generally I skip ahead, because I've played most of the sets through the lowbie stuff and understand the basics anyway, but sometimes I take advantage of the gradual power increase and the time I gain to learn what every power does and is capable of doing.

LOL at calling dual-box play "solo".
The Bacon Compels You.
50, IO'd, and accoladed.
"One day we all may see each other elsewhere. In Tyria, in Azeroth. We may pass each other and never know it. And that's sad. But if nothing else, we'll still have Rhode Island."
But there's always the Global channels for casual chit-chat.
It's solo in that you don't have team-mates to yell at or wait for while they train, sell thier drops, buy new enhancements because thiers went red, run off to ICON to change the color of thier shoes to match thier mood or while they sit around spamming invites because 7 isn't a "full" team.

I don't think I'd be inclined to anyway, but since I only have 1 pc I can't dual box. Switching every setting to minimum so I can open CoH twice on the one machine long enough to send some SG invites is as far as I go, and that only rarely.
One of the (many) unanswered questions about Going Rogue, and by far the biggest for me, has to be will Praetoria only cover levels 1 to 20 (and some 'endgame' ?)
Right off I'll say I won't mind (much) if it does. I love the low level game, and spend most of my time on it, but I sometimes suspect I'm in the minority in this, especially as far as forumites go, and I admit that I wince at the thought of the reaction if it is confirmed that the new shiny is only the first 20 levels. But this isn't intended as a GR speculation thread as such. I'm just wondering if the impression I get is correct, or if it's skewed by a vocal minority? So do you like those first 20 levels, or do you regard it as a tiresome pre-travel power, pre-stamina, pre-interesting enemies grind? |
hero side the low levels are a tremendous waste of time and do the game no favors. It is a parade of ancient, pointless content that reflects the mindset and technology in play at launch, not the current reality.
Villian side is technically & philosophically much better, but suffers badly from a lack of diversity. No matter how engaging the storyline, you can only jump down that snake hole so many times before your eyes start to cross.
That said, modern innovations have done wonders to ease the burden of the lower levels, especially for longtime players. Vet powers, bank temp travel powers, MA, low level acc buff, exp smoothing, all go a long way to help reduce the tedium of the low levels.
But if GR delivers a rich, detailed 'lowbie' gaming experience, it will be doing us and the game a huge favor.

My City Was Gone
Well, for me it was after the install, and I entered the Character Creator. Other than about a month or so where I avoided Atlas Park like the plague and turned off broadcast, it just keeps getting better for me.

I've never actually fought Doc Vahz. At all. Ever, in the three years I've been playing. Why? Because I'm trying to get out of pre-22 like a bat outta hell. Which I think is a shame.

She is 50 now, with the TF Commander accolade under her belt
Especially now, when you can exemp and still get XP, you can still do any of the things you passed by, and still enjoy them AND continue levelling at the same time.

I love the game 1-10ish and then again 22-50, but the teen levels make me want to scream. It's not the lack of end that's the big issue, not every character has trouble with the blue, but EVERY character has horrible accuracy during that time period, and the ways to ameliorate it (slightly) are almost as annoying for me as just gritting my teeth and getting through it already. I don't PL, teaming's the best way to endure it. If I'm unlucky with getting a team, the only way I can make it is by playing until I start swearing, then it's time to play a higher-level character or something else entirely.

Pretty much the same with me.
The top reasons why I "hate" the 1-22 (note I put 22, not 20 since 22 is when I actually get IOs *I never touch TOs/DOs/SOs anymore* and is actually worth something) range is as follows:
1.) Same ol' missions/content. It's not so bad redside but blueside....grr...walk/run a lot and do 5-7 missions THEN get the contact's cell #...at least redside you get their cell # after the first, maybe 2nd mission.
2.) Accuracy/Lack of powers. Yes it is a lot better since that tohit bonus was put in a few issues ago but it's still quite bothersome (especially around 14-22)...MISS, MISS, MISS, MISS.... >_< Add to that you only have 1-3 attack powers usually....thank the devs for the veteran reward powers!
3.) Lack of Stamina. As everyone has mentioned coupled with # 2, you seem to need to use Rest every other group....not fun.
The lack of travel power(s) isn't a huge issue with me...since I'm a 60+ month vet....once I hit lvl 6, I have my travel power But if it wasn't for that....then yes a lack of travel power would be another point for me on why I 'hate' that lvl range.
All the above can be 'thrown out the window' with a good team that just blazes through content/missions together though
