There's usually a Friends & Family phase during EVERY game's development. It's kinda like the transition between alpha and beta testing; the devs need a larger testing pool than just themselves, but aren't yet ready to invite total strangers to come help test their still-very-unfinished product. So yes, there will be a F&F phase for Going Rogue. In fact, Positron DID mention it at the end of the GR preview at HeroCon when talking about their tentative dates for GR's beta and release.

With regard to the other phases:

The various waves of testers (5-year vets, Loyalty program, pre-orders, and HeroCon attendees) were specified in an e-mail sent out last year advertising the Loyalty program. According to both it and the devs, 5-year vets will be the first invited to test once the F&F phase is over. I'm not sure where Hero-Con attendees will fit into the schedule.

If this is not good enough for you, then you have an over-inflated sense of your personal right to demand official information.

That is good enough for me. And all it took was a citation! Holy cow, this sources stuff really does the trick!

Too bad the "citation" is from another forumite and not a developer or moderator of the game and thus is not official verified and certified information.

That's because it is pretty much a law of the universe. ALL companies (or at least all companies with any common sense) do at least some internal testing before inviting in outside testers. Even if the devs never actually say it they are going to do "friends & family" testing before inviting in fans.

The test server will be down for the day so they can merge the markets, revamp the Shadow Shard, and add animated hair, Ultra Mode, and underwater and moon zones.

I can dream, can't I?

I just copied that list from the opening post of the Post Going Rogue Info Here thread in the Hero Con subforum. Which pretty much collects most of what we know about GR.

That'd be nice...

Tbh, my guess isn't that we're getting anything Monday, but more that they're testing that whatever the hell they've got planned for us is working. I mean, if they announced that closed beta was starting and it then didn't work, there'd be some nasty things said, I'm sure. However, I was under the impression that GR would be tested on a seperate server altogether, so that doesn't really line up with my guess.

Maybe the downtime for the server is to test a patch that addresses the missing breastplate costume piece of Arachnos soldiers

Personally, I think there's going to be an issue before GR comes out, so that's probably what's going to be tested, say during the Valentine's Day event, and will feature at least some GR changes put in place to take some testing weight off the time and to "prep" the userbase in some ways.

Also.. pre-orders of GR are a step? Where can I preorder GR??

My guess is this.

Come end of monday or beginning of tuesday, TV and Dr. Aeon call some sort of truce\tie\alliance to set down their fighting and join forces etc, and then state that "Content" and "Ultra Mode" will be released together as GR on the test server for closed beta.

Just a hunch.

I honestly can't see the Devs relying on this forum contest of who can rally the most supporters to determine what is released first. Entertaining as it is, it just doesn't smell right. The marketing department won't let them say jack for months, but will let them be like "Yeah play some silly games on the forums to determine the next thing we release, that's fine."

Doesn't compute for me. (I support TV just in case.)

Also, the way TV mentioned his "Content" seemed suspiciously like he was talking GR content for me. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's how it came across..

I'm thinking\hoping that come Tuesday we will have GR to test.

I was at the Con. I did the loyalty thing, and I intend to pre-order GR the very moment I find out I can. I look forward to getting in there and bug hunting the beta. After I get done Squee-freeming my pants.

I'd agree with you, except that both TV and Dr Aeon are pointedly offering their features BEFORE Going Rogue. So I think what will go to Test is Issue 17 (including Ultra Mode and new content) which should keep us all busy while more work gets done on GR.

^ ^ This lol

Since I saw the announcement made I was telling the guys on our TS that I HAVE to search for the 1st person to give it the "GR BETA ZOMG!!!" treatment.

Wasn't surprised to NOT find it in the announcement discussion page due to this lol.

Grtz to the OP on being the 1st :P

In the last Closed Beta, the Friends and Family phase lasted half a day before they started inviting the first wave of hand-picked veteran play-testers. There were four more waves just that week.

The purpose of waves is to not overwhelm the fragile set-up on the servers where none of the code has been optimized yet. Also, the Devs learned the hard way that when you let in a lot of people all at once, they all do the same thing and they all send in the same bug reports overwhelming Q&A's ability to sort through them. Not to mention the overwhelming of the global testing channel and the swarming of the Dev appearances.

They keep the initial numbers small so that all the broken stuff is identified, reported, and made known. This first group gets their hands held by the Devs ("Yes, we know that's broken." or "That's odd, let me pop into your mission and see it."). The following waves get their hands held by the previous waves ("Yes, the devs know about that.").

This is probably why HeroCon attendees get in before 5 month Vets since they're a smaller pool.

If anyone's longing to be one of the first in, let me remind you that the early days of the CoV beta were UNPLAYABLE. Only a handful of missions were playable and the disconnects and rubber-banding lag was constant. There were several times I just stopped trying to test the CoV beta until the next patch came out.

Anyone who gets into Beta early and whines about anything broken is going to be ridiculed and told to get out by me and many of the other regular beta testers. You don't belong there if you're just looking to play or get a sneak peak. Wait for Open Beta for that. Paragon Studios does *not* use Closed Beta as a marketing tool -- it's work.

I might need to bind /bug report to a key when I get into Beta.
