Not impressed

Was really keen to try this game out. I downloaded the updater and found that wouldn't work so I had to hunt around for a fix online. Found one that would only install if the files were stored directly to the desktop. When i get the game running i find there is no ui at all. The only window is the 'this is a trial account window'. Pressing random keys brings up a few windows so i play until i get fed up with controls i don't know and can't change (I can't see my powers or my stats). I log back in to try again and now it seems to want to reinstall the whole thing from scratch despite it all being on the hard drive. It took 4 hours to download all this, and now it claims to be 'fixing' files by downloading them at the same speed (slower in fact, if the speed listed is any indication). This cannot be right.

After you had it all downloaded and tried to relaunch... did you click on "Verify all files"... if so don't do that lol

Otherwise I don't know what to tell you other than maybe that's just how the trial works... personally I would just pay the $20 you get a month free out of so you can experience all the game has to offer and give it a fair shot.

The first time I tried playing the game I didn't like it... went back to WoW. Came back 6 months or so ago and regret not giving it a better chance at the time.

I wasn't given an option to verify anything. It just started reinstalling. This is a trial alright, just not the one i was expecting and it certainly doesn't encourage me to spend money for the same experience.

Sounds like something got seriously screwed up during your install. When you get into the game, press C (to open the chat window), and type /windowresetall. That should give you a normal interface including your powers and such. If not, then open the menu (in the upper-right corner) and toggle the windows you want to view individually.

Also in the Menu is the Options, where there is a Keymapping tab that shows you the complete list of controls for the game, and DOES allow you to change anything you want.

One thing I suggest starting with is the "Graphics and Audio" options and changing the Window Scale for your User Interface so it gives you more room on the screen. This can also be done by changing your Resolution as well.

A lot of people have issues when installing games (ANY GAME) don't let a tech issue be your initial impression of the game itself.

It's saying: "fixing file: piggs/geom.pigg" and it's downloading from scratch (and it won't finish before I go to bed which means the whole thing will have to start from scratch tomorrow). Sorry, but I'm really not impressed.

Unfortunately it's too late for that. If it was a case of simply repatching a minor, small, file then it wouldn't be an issue. A complete multi gigabyte reinstall that will take about 5 hours is another thing entirely.

Let me point out again... you're judging the gameplay on an installation issue. I realize it can be frustrating but it is not a reflection of what actually playing the game is like and since installation errors aren't common issues on the boards (at least from what I've seen) you might just be unlucky.

On the other hand if you want to walk away from an award winning game that is still one of the most original MMOs out there today because you lack the patience to get it installed after an error... well you weren't around long enough to be missed :P

I suspect that this is the root cause of your problems. First off, can you provide some details about your setup (operating system, basic spec etc.), we might be able to hazard a guess as to why the installer didn't work. Secondly what was the "fix" you found online?

p4 1.5, 1gb RAM, geforce fx5200, windows XP. the fix was to put the isntallation program on the desktop, which i did and it ran. It installed the game to the default folder and then I ran it, which seemed fine until the game started properly (with a villain character) and I saw no ui. Everything else seemed fine. I logged out properly and then when i came back to log in the above happened and it just ain't happening. Of course I'm judging the game, but I won't pay for any piece of software that isn't at least stable first. This isn't. If it can be fixed, great. If it's going to take all day to do it, notsomuch.

It's obviously stable--we're all playing it.

I had a similar problem with Lord of the Rings Online, so I can sympathize. It worked for a couple of months, then they had an update, and I could never make it work again. So I just gave up on it.

I've run the game on several different PCs, including a laptop, so it works and is stable on a wide variety of platforms. Problems like the UI not working are generally related to the graphics card. I'm not sure how old your graphics card is, but your system seems to be on the lower end of gaming hardware performance specs, so I'm guessing it's several years old. I'd suggest you update to the latest graphics drivers and then try again.

The game has been successfully running for 5 almost 6 years (in April). It is stable. I understand you are frustrated. But, as Radubadu stated installation issues are very infrequent. I'm sorry you are having difficulties. The fact that it is re-downloading files, along with you not seeing the UI initially, strongly indicates that the installation you have is messed up, a lot. I would recommend letting the updater run, download, and giving it the time it needs correct itself. After which, you should be able to see what the game truly offers. And if you like it and choose to pay for it, you will already have a full functional copy.

If you don't wish to do so because of your frustration, that is your choice. But since you posted into the player question section, I would assume you are, at least, willing to listen to our advice and possibly withhold judgment until you are able to experience the game as it was meant to be.

If i wasn't interested in other people's opinions, I wouldn't be here at all. But as I said, the greatest game in the world is no good if I can't play it.

Well, you have received at least two recommendations. Hopefully, they will resolve you issue. Please let us know how it works out.

It sounds like it is patching/fixing itself. Let it finish. In the meantime, take Zloth's advice:

After that, give us some data. My CoH Helper program can gather a lot of information about your computer and game settings and format it nicely for our forums. Paste that info into your post. You should also gather a HijackThis log so we can see what programs are running on your PC. If you have some programs up that you normally close before playing, go ahead and close them before getting your HiJack log, too.

Well, you are barely above the minimum system requirements for the game which might be part of the problem. I'd suggest two things. First off update your graphics card drivers, the problem sounds like it's with your graphics card and updating the drivers fixes a surprising number of problems there. Secondly I'd lower the graphics settings to the absolute minimum and then test different ones until you find what works best. Unfortunately I'm not aware of any method for changing the settings unless you can see the UI.

EDIT: See Stargeek's post on the next page for how to adjust settings outside the game

Go on to the main site for the game and see if you can download the client directly from the website.

I had issues with this game and it's install when I first got it. I decided to stick around and actually play the game to see if it was worth my time...that was 6 years ago

I went to the bookstore and saw Huckleberry Finn on the shelf. But since the cover looked like it had been gnawed on by several starving infants, I left it there and walked angrily out of the store.

Why not just ask the clerk if there's another copy in the back? :P

Bad install... just set your computer to not sleep, let the patcher run over night, and go to bed. If it is still working on the download in the morning, a) upgrade your internet connection
