My rep has been going up and down like a yo-yo

Used to be two green bars, then it went to two red (probably because of that PVP thread), then one red, then two red again, and now it's one green.

What's up with this? I guess I'm just unpredictable.

I'm almost certain it was the PvP thread. The sad thing is, you weren't being antagonistic in the slightest--you were calm, rational, and genuinely interested in discussing why things are the way they are. You didn't have a nasty secret agenda (that I know of ), but PvP is such a radioactive topic that people automatically neg repped you just for opening that can of worms. Then they saw you in other threads, and realized that you weren't that bad, so they changed their mind about your rep. Or people like me who knew you from before (and knew you were a nice guy) positive repped you to balance it out.

Basically, you got a bum rap for something that I don't think you deserved, but things are starting to balance out now.

I got 2 bars shaved off because of a comment I made on that "Hypocritical and Uptight" thread, voicing my opinion about people who participate in ERP. I guess I kinda hit a nerve there *shrug*

Forum rep is just a mini-game.

Did you know that you can report neg rep that violates the forum rules? Being combative is against forum rules, in fact.

I kind of view positive and negative rep as two sides of the same coin in many cases. Sure, a lot of people will negative rep you if you're being a tool, but sometimes you get it even if you state things calmly and rationally. You're provoking a reaction and it's strong enough that it compels someone to do something about it.

I've had a few threads recently in this forum and the reaction to the Gated Community thread was eye opening in particular. In that thread, I only posted the opener and had no follow up. But it struck a nerve and I got almost an even amount of positive and negative rep. All this from the premise that CoH may be more open and welcoming to those who are socially adept at finding channels than those who aren't.

I guess there are some people who got offended in some way by me stating that CoH could appear to be empty or socially isolating. On the other hand, for some, the game is a fountain of teaming and socialization opportunity - if you belong to the right channel(s).

I kind of liked it at its best: People giving each other feedback on how to be better posters. More than once I got Red Rep coupled with constructive criticism with which I agreed, enabling to contribute more to the community.

Apparently I'm no good on my own, though. Once the comments were disabled, mine dropped.

Personally I love posts that get me both pos and neg rep. Those crack me up to no end for some reason.

Somebody explain to me why we care about the anonymous internet public approval meter?

I think I got bad rep posting in the suggestion forum and making a thread call gadgets for girls! I'm thinking about making gadgets for boys to further lower my reputation.
