Then they saw you in other threads, and realized that you weren't that bad, so they changed their mind about your rep. Or people like me who knew you from before (and knew you were a nice guy) positive repped you to balance it out.

Basically, you got a bum rap for something that I don't think you deserved, but things are starting to balance out now.

This is why I do not bother with rep

The only way to ensure you always have positive rep is to not rock the boat with regards to popular opinion around here. It doesn't matter if it's right or wrong, it just matters that you go along with what everyone else says!

Well, until you post so many times that you become a board celebrity. Then you can surround yourself with a personality cult of obsessive geeks who will ruthlessly defend you, and always look to you for their marching orders. They will always make sure you are always in the green, and will viciously strike back at any who dare to disagree with you (and usually -rep such miscreants to death!). They will all, of course, always agree with you; it doesn't matter if you're right or wrong. It just matters that they go along with whatever you say.

Come to think of it, the rest of the Internet tends to work this way!

No, that doesn't work. At least for me. People still hate me as much as they did before I had most posts than God.... in fact, I think they hate me even MORE now if that were even possible...

Ah, so THAT'S where I ****** up. It all makes sense now!

I enjoy your posts, Wes.

Hey if I re-enable mine can I see what's been rep'd on me during the time I've had it disabled? Gonna check...

You can still see your OWN rep no matter what, just take any of your posts and try to rep yourself. It will show you your rep score. People can still rep you and you can still see it. "Disabling rep" only disables the PUBLIC DISPLAY of your rep. The previous centralized location for viewing rep COMMENTS, however has been disabled. The only way to view your rep comments now is to go to each and every one of your posts and try to rep yourself to see the comments for that post.

And considering the number of posts I have daily? Yeah... I ain't doing that.

Indeed! To be a mere iconoclast means you will be forever shunned and disliked. By then, it wouldn't even matter if you'd found the cure for cancer, developed an anti-gravity device and a form of free energy. No one would care because no one would like you!

No, first you have to collect a fanbase around you who will hang on your every word.

Besides, it's no fun to drink the kool-aid all by yourself.

Oh ok, I re-enabled it for nothing then. So back to being disabled...

Also, it seems, when trying to help somebody with their posted questions, you have to write out vast quantities of text, even when it's not necessary, or else you get bad repped

Please note that this is incorrect. You can see the comments if you click the little "scales" symbol on your own posts. It will pop up with a message, listing comments and their rep value if the post has any, or saying the post hasn't been repped yet. It will also say your current rep value (not the value of your rep at the time of the comment, just your current value).

You can report rep comments by reporting your own post that was repped, and telling the mods to look at the rep comments. They are anonymous to the users, but they are decidedly NOT anonymous to the mods. They can - and have - punished users for leaving hostile rep.

If it's your and you have no feedback, it'll simply tell you your rep score. If there's feedback left for that post, it'll show you what it is.

I report said feedback to either Mod08 or Niviene, depending on sobriety. Failing sobriety, flip a coin.
Meh last time I reported rep some of which was very much against forum rules Niv only removed the comment not the rep itself. The first time i reported it mod 08 removed both. So i would go mod 08.

You must also remember that people are far more liable to hand out negative rep than positive rep. That's human nature in action; when people are happy and content, they tend to keep quiet. They only tend to make noise when they're something bothering them. Thus, if you merely parrot what the masses are saying in order to be seen as one of them, this would not do very much to increase your rep. Whereas if you even went the tiniest amount against the grain, you might find yourself suddenly deep in the red!

To get a vast amount of positive rep requires a lot of work to stroke the egos of the masses to make them all feel like special little snowflakes. This in part is why you'd end up collecting a fan base around you if you got that far in the first place.

I totally agree. I've experienced the same thing in IT for the last ...... years. Last to get thanked, first to get smited (smote?). I guarantee IT isn't the only area that experiences this

After many months on the new forums, I was up to two little green dots four hours ago. Between now and then, I either offended someone or got in the way of a deadly rep-bomb, apparently! I'd prefer green, but if I can't have that, the red still looks way better than grey, so I'm leaving rep turned on.

Some people (especially nerd-raging OCD forum posters who shall remain nameless... >.>) are just itching to get themselves offended. That way they get to bludgeon you with their righteous indignation until you're very red!

You have to imagine if there were anyone of the reverse disposition, we'd have a lot more people here with lots of green boxes. Obviously, despite what some posters are saying about how useless rep points are (and they really are), someone must be taking it seriously!

EDIT: But just to show that the reverse can sometimes happen, I'll let you guys know that I've been giving +rep to any poster I see that is in the red. Sometimes I don't even bother to read what they said. Doesn't matter now, don't it?
