Quote:The data link does not work. It would be better if you can repost the build as a brute, and fix the link or post a data chunk such that people can see the build more clearly in the planner.Ok. Im running a DM/Invul atm, for something called invulnerablity i feel pretty weak as hell. But heres my Question, should i use this build (build is to follow) or does anoyone have a DM/WP build that will hold up better?
Invulnerability is actually referring to resistance against attacks that deal s/l damage. For villains, it is pretty rough for invulnerability to fight against Arachnos. Also, you need mobs around you to take advantage of invincibility. I think invulnerability is ok overall if you know the mobs and your power set well. -
Is EM referring to energy melee? If it is energy melee, I can only find a few threads on this combo, and they are either old or don't have discussions on builds that are relevant to you. Maybe you need to look for threads on shield and energy melee separately, and put together a build yourself.

I would focus on typed defense. And I would leave the stealth turned off, unless you're really stealthing. Here is your build re-slotted.

Quote:Taking fire blast and fire ball into account, the highest single-target dps attack chain for your build is MG>S>SL>S, as you expected.Assuming AAO and Soul Drain each hitting 7 targets and Fury at 75%, can anyone tell me:
1) What my highest ST DPS attack chain would be? (probably MG>S>SL>S?)
274.89 dps (261.15, after taking into account 5% chance missing)
eps is 2.79. You need dark consumption to maintain your endurance.
Actually, the hard part is to find out the attack chain. But once you have the chain, you can use the Mid's planner to help you calculating dps. In the planner, you can set the fury to be 75%, and AAO and soul drain to 7 targets. Turn on all the relevant clicks and toggles, including assault that grants damage buffs. In the option menu, check the use ArcanaTime box. Then you can read off the damage and the cast time from the planner, add up the damage to get the total damage, and add up the cast times to get the cycle time of the attack chain. -
I think it is not a bad guide to get people started. From the sticky in this brute forum, I found that there is already a stone melee/dark armor guide, but it was written in I6, which is a bit outdated. It would be nice to have a guide for this combo written with updated information and contemporary point of view. I think that a guide with just brief descriptions of each power might look a bit like the old guides.
Here are my comments for each section:
I think the two sections can be written more from the point of view of the readers. For example, instead of saying that you're writing a book about a character of darkness with great strength, you can say that for people who are interested in making a dark-themed smashy character, stone melee/dark armor is the choice. I think it's just style. I feel that you are writing a guide about yourself, not writing a guide for other people.
I think you can consider the points raised by other people. I don't think you need to cut and paste the in-game power description here. I would appreciate more discussions on things that people won't realize at a first glance of the power sets.
At the end of the guide, you posted an IO build. I think you can post both an IO and a SO (or generic IO) build. This is because in your discussion on powers, you suggest SO/generic IO slotting. I think it is more convenient just to post a SO/generic IO build for people to look at directly. For your posted IO build, I think it is good to list a summary of the set bonus total, but the very detailed list of set bonus breakdown is probably not necessary as I doubt that any people will read it. -
For your posted build, the highest dps single-target attack chain is seismic smash > heavy mallet > stone mallet > hurl boulder > gloom > stone mallet when hasten is down and your +recharge proc is not triggered. At 70% fury, the dps is 155.65 (147.88 if you take into account missing 5% of the time), and the eps is 3.51. The total cycle time for the chain is 11.22 seconds.

Do you want us to review your guide first before posting in the Player's guide section? Or are you writing this guide just to share your experience with us?

Quote:For ranged defense, you can use Mako's Bite in your single-target attacks. For aoe defense, Eradication and Scirocco's Dervish in your pbaoe attacks, for example. I think you can refer to the wiki for further information.I have taken any looks around the black market and still dont find the equivalent of kinetic combat for ranged/aoe. What sets do I need to look at for ranged/aoe D and E/N D?

As mentioned above, one of the characteristics of EA is endurance management. The era of 6-slotting an attack with damage is long gone. With ED and IO, people can build an endurance-efficient toon, and it actually takes some effort to exploit the full potential of the endurance tools (here, I don't mean deliberately building the toon badly). I think it is slightly harder for a stalker than a brute to make good use of such tools. This is probably just an opinion, as it depends on the specific build and playstyle.
I think it is ok for stalkers to have their own version of energy drain, and maybe a different conserve power as well. I don't visit the stalker's forum much. But in the brute forum, there are suggestions to make the heal from energy drain more front-loaded. This point is already mentioned in some of the posts above. I think that the effect of energy drain can saturate with just a few mobs as stalkers are not supposed to aggro a large number of mobs. I would love to add more flavor to it, for example, -dmg debuff on the drained mobs as their energy is drained (I guess this won't happen, but I mention it anyway).
On the brute side, people usually talk about changing CP to something like energize, rather than changing energy drain to energize. The reason is that when EA is proliferated, CP will overlap with the one in the ancillary power pool. The change was done to electric armor when it was proliferated, so people expect CP in EA to be changed in the future as well. -
I agree that energy drain is not as great on a stalker compared to a brute. It's not a bad idea to design a different energy drain for stalkers. As such, the motivation behind the thread is ok. On the other hand, the suggestion needs more thought. I don't think the discussion on comparing energy drain and dark regeneration will be productive. Realistically, a new energy drain needs an endurance component such that the essense of the power set and the power can be kept.
-
It seems like your goal is to perma energize and soul drain, which is ok. I think you can take the spiritual alpha slot into account, which allows some of your IO set bonuses to go to defense, rather than just recharge alone. It would be pretty good if you can bring your s/l/e/ne defense to mid 30s and stack it with darkest night. I think with both energize and power sink, your endurance should be fine, so it is not necessary to use impervium armor in your resistance toggles, maybe use reactive armors if you want some defense.
-
You can also refer to City of Data for details.

Quote:The build that you posted doesn't seem to be quite consistent with what you want. I don't see much IO set bonus for defense in your build. I re-slotted your build. Maybe you can treat it as a starting point.I basically want as much defense as possible without gimping myself.

I reworked your build a bit. There are a couple unassigned slots, which you can put to anywhere you want. There is nothing particularly wrong with your build. I think you can drop jab and use boxing as a filler if necessary. Maybe maneuvers can be slotted such that it is more than just a set mule for a LotG +7.5.

Quote:S/l defense is the most important. Energy attacks are quite common as well. F/c attacks usually have a smashing or lethal component, so f/c defense is less important in my opinion. How important is it to have all your defense softcapped in that situation?
Quote:On the build that nearly softcaps everything (except psi and toxic), it looks like most (roughly 70%, though I didn't count) of the slotting was chosen to add defense, at the cost of suboptimal slotting for other stats. Is it worth it? It seems to me (though I'm inexperienced) like it would be better to aim for F/C and E/N in the 30s, using the extra slots to add additional layers of protection (optimized DP, +regen, ability to kill things faster, possibly more resists although they seem to be overslotted* if anything).
I think just soft-capping s/l defense with 1 mob for invincibility is already quite a significant improvement. How further improvement should be done is mainly governed by personal preference.
Actually, it is pretty hard to softcap everything for a brute. It is better just to softcap s/l, and maybe e/ne defense if it is convenient. Then dedicate the rest of the IO bonuses for hit points and recharge, and damage proc if you want higher dps. -
You can take a glance at my long-winded EA guide. You can find it in the sticky brute guide in the forum and in my signature. I have a suggested build there, which is probably not quite relevant to you as it uses fiery melee instead of super strength. However, there are discussions below the build which explains the slotting. Maybe you'll find some of the discussions useful. For mobs with 60 something to-hit, I think it is better to overcome it by darkest night rather than pushing your defense by brute force. This way, your build doesn't need to focus that much on defense and forgo other IO bonuses.
-
The build would be better if the s/l defense can be closer to 50% such that you can take a defense debuff, and softcap f/c defense. The latter point is not really too big a deal most of the time, but it's not really hard to do so. Do you take hurl just to softcap negative energy defense? If so, you can drop it, and maybe take a travel power instead. The defense can be obtained elsewhere. The net recovery is a little low, but I believe it is ok with energy drain. The issue is that you might need energy drain for endurance a bit too much, and spend time finding a few mobs beside you to drain, in particular if you solo 8-people missions.
I reworked your build a bit. The changes are mostly minor, probably just to improve the quality of life in my opinion.

My point is not that recharge doesn't help at all, but it doesn't help EA as much as other power sets, in particular at the level of a multi-billion build. This point is more obvious for SR. Also, it's a comparison with other power sets. If killing faster helps survival for EA, it helps other power sets equally well. For awesomeness of energy drain to support toggles like darkest night, I believe my guide in my signature can't emphasize it enough.
-
I don't really think that your endurance usage is that high to require 15 seconds recharge, even with darkest night which I'm using as well. As far as endurance is concerned, more recharge doesn't really help much. For heals, recharges does help. Against 1 mob for example. I don't think it helps even with 1 second recharge. For a group of mobs as you mentioned, I agree that it helps. Practically, do you really need to heal that many times to beat a group of mobs?

It's difficult for other people to know what's going on when there are comments on energy aura saying that it's great, while others say that it is terrible. Both have a point though, at least by looking at the power set from their perspective.
On the other hand, I think it is not entirely fair to say that energy aura is not good even if you invest billions on it. In terms of optimization using IO, the problem with defense-based power sets like SR and EA is that their performance is pretty close to its highest point after defense soft-cap is reached. Since EA doesn't offer extra regeneration, nor hit points (outside of overload) to start with, and recharge doesn't boost survival significantly for EA, rare and ultra-rare IOs don't help EA as much as other power sets. Recharge mainly helps on higher dps. Higher hit points and regeneration are good, just that the IO bonuses by themselves are not good enough without something else to stack on. All these just imply that the performance of EA can be improved more efficiently by other means, not by investing many billions on IO (apart from the kinetic combat). -
Quote:The guide is ok for a new player who wants to know what powers to pick, and just to get started. From this perspective, I think the guide can be improved such that it can provide more information for new players, and can be made more readable to them.Is this really what passes for a guide these days? A listing of powers with only a few scant details listed about them, and some bad advice given on them in some cases, and then just dropping a build with no insight behind it?
I wrote a guide as well. With all the detailed information already available in game, wiki, city of data, and Mid's planner, it is really hard nowadays to write a guide that is useful and beyond trivial numbers. Back in the old days, a guide could be easily 5-starred by just posting a few numbers. Now, a decent guide on power sets is like writing a thesis. -
I made some changes to your build such that the s/l defense is soft-capped.

Quote:I think the suggestion is ok. Practically, it is useful to screen out people that you rated as 1 star, and highlight people with 5 star. I guess you must have spent a lot of time rating people though.I'd like to be able to see the star ratings when I'm searching for teammates, and to be able to sort by rating. I don't know if this would be hard or not, but it would be useful to me.
