Some PvP Advice for PvErs/New Players

Hey PvP Community!

My name is Undead Cyborg and I am the leader of a large SG on the Champion server. I wanted to make a compiled list of advice I could offer to players in my SG who wanted to try their hand at PvP. Want I am looking for is tactics and suggestions that would help any toon in a PvP situation-zone-arena-etc. I am a amateur PvPr at best and would welcome any input. I know I could of probably searched through the PvP forums for these things but a centralized location of player advice sounded better to me; thank you all for your time.

I don't have time to sit down and list a bunch, but a few that I tell new players to learn...

Keep moving in a zone.

Expect to be attacked at anytime. Need to be fast to react to an attack, what I find with PvErs is you attack them and by the time they have reacted it's already game over.

Learn all the ATs out there and think of ways your own build can combat them before rushing into a fight. Help them work out what their build may be effective on, and what will roll them so they have a heads up..

Most importantly, be polite!! Don't react to **** talk in broadcast. People will be much more eager to help you/farm you less.

best advice i could give would be this: don't let anyone ever ever ever tell you how to play. it's your 15 dollar a month, you can tp foe people to drones if you like it, you can pop 50 reds and trow shouts if it makes you happy. push the mechanics of the game to their limit, it will make you a better a player.

Expect to lose.

Expect to lose often.

Get used to defeat.

I can offer no better advice for the newcomer to pvp than this.

But whatever you do, don't get p***ed off and delete your character simply because they got repeatedly and easily killed by an experienced pvper.

It was only a level 30 character so it wasn't that big a deal but I did that once and it still bugs me occasionally.

Scroll your camera all the way back and slightly up. You need to have eyes in the back of your head and see as much ground as possible.

You need some sort of +perception. Certain powersets have that built in to them (focused senses, danger sense, targeting drone, etc) but otherwise you need a rectified reticle IO, or a pool/epic/patron power (tactics, focused accuracy), or a teammate to buff you (clear mind, O2 boost), or the base empowerment buff.

Conversely, you will want to have some stealth on you again from your own powers, a pool power, IO, teammate buff, or base empowerment buff.

Since I13, knockback has become a very effective tactic. If you have a KB power, consider enhancing it. You will also want to have significant kb protection. For casual play melee characters other than fire and dark probably have enough. For competitive play you'll want 41 points of KB protection. That's a LOT of karmas, steadfasts, and zephyrs.

Adding a Few More:
- Never EVER EVER EVER delete a toon unless you have the same exact power sets on another toon. I cannot stress this enough. Throughout the years, CoH Devs have shown an affinity towards reshuffling what is an what isn't a fotm. A year and a half ago we laughed a /EM doms and Fire/Darks, Sonic blast was third-rate in blasters. Elec/therms were bad because the lolzy damage meant forts would kill you before running out of end or blues. Don't ever delete a toon.
- Do not PVE too much. If you need money, Market PVP, then go PVP some more. You're not gonna get better at PVP by killing Lord Recluse 25 times a week.
- Practice your survivability. This is the one thing we're lacking in the community right now; and while it is partially the system's fault; back when I played for UJL, there were matches where my dom was put in just so that the opposing team would chase me around and leave other, less survivable players alone (syph).
- Don't play a regin. It makes you see the game in black and white if you haven't played another toon more extensively. That is my main quarrel with the set and why I make fun of people playing them; it removes insp management as a skill from 90% of encounters (therms being basically the only exception to this), and becoming actually good at using it requires that you stop thinking like the toon you may have PVE'd for 50 level and begin thinking of yourself as a blapper with infinite greens.

no, i tell them not to start with one.
very different.

my first pvp toon was a fire/sonic corruptor; quite possibly the most challenging position to play in (then) i9 pvp on the villain ladder, where there wasn't as much +perception as in the hero ladder, shields mattered, caging mattered, and being in on the spike was essential. After that, i moved to dominators, and back then, playing one required quite a bit of finesse; it wasn't the damage spam of i13.. but guess you weren't around back then.

still, i think you're just bitter about being a victim of reginitus.

Already, after a handful of posts, in a thread meant to draw in more PvP players, the petty bickering begins.

You wonder why players avoid PvP.

Pretty sure it's the fact that it's broken and not fun for them....not because some people talk trash.

I do agree with BB....what he's saying isn't anything new. It's not a good idea to start off on a regen, or any scrapper. They're easy mode. Learn to play on a more difficult AT, and then the game will be easier.

He's from Defiant so they were probably using elec/ice or something silly.

Defiant PvP has always been jokes.

The advice is sound. the childish bickering already starting in the thread (forum PvP it's called I guess) is more suited to a middle-school playground.

As for PvP being 'broken', that's obviously a matter of opinion. The rules work the way they work, adapt or be defeated.

I PvP with friends in the Arena and run around zones on and off when I feel like it. We trash talk on voice chat, but we have been friends for years and there is certainly no real animosity involved. I PvP in other games as well. I don't mind dying, it's all learning.

I would simply prefer to PvP against rational, intelligent adults, like my gaming buddies, than those who bring the childish insults into the mix, regardless of if the advice they give is sound.

So, in short, my reason for not PvPing against strangers IS because of their (general) attitude, not the game rules/engine. The last time I was fighting with my tank in a zone, after it taking 3 players to finally bring be down, the first thing I got was a tell to the effect 'go home noob you suck.' How is that supposed to want me to interact with a person who thinks this tactic will encourage me to PvP more?

I feel the same way about the over-testosteroned, insult laden competitors of ANY game, from Poker to Magic to Football to TF2. Life is too short to spend much of it listening to insults thrown by someone over a game.

Now, for the topic at hand, the best advice I can give to players new to PvP is:

. Read. Read everything you can, information is king.
. Don't go in alone. PvP in CoH is really team based and IMO more fun in groups.
. Remember that faceplanting is normal. You have to learn somehow.
. Good sportsmanship will get you better advice.

so you're saying that you aren't competitive-minded enough to deal with any pvp game where cross-faction chat is tolerated.

gg.

you said it. i just rephrased it.

So, since I prefer to interact with ration, intelligent humans, try and bring forth examples that apparently have superfluous information and state my opinion, that makes me a target for MORE insults. Interesting.

Have fun with your attempts at increasing the PvP population. Good luck, you will need it.

I haven't heard that since i13 hit open beta. That **** is epic.

The devs change everything for these mythical new pvpers, if one does stumble into an arena on freedom they ***** constantly. Let them go pick daisies with the Red Caps, we wont be worse off for it.

Interesting you put it that way. What about the idiocy of someone who tries trash talking over the internet.

if it is wrong to take offense at simple text, surely it is equally wrong to try to cause offense ?

It is entirely unnecessary and it is offputting to some.

What happens in my own life, from the long ago days of board games and P and P games, is such people tend to not get invited back.

As an occasional PVPer, I will keep doing what I choose (which is PvP amongst adults who know how to behave) and leave the 'PvP crowd' to dwindle further.

I'm gonna remain positive, even after your negativity provoking posts.

Tip: Don't fight with barrier unless you know what you're talking about because you simply just won't win.

PS you don't know what you're talking about.

The problem is, they worked completely different for 4+ years. And then the game was literally destroyed, on a random whim of people that never even PvP'd. There was absolutely no reason for the overhaul, and absolutely no logic behind many of the changes. And in the end, it accomplished literally nothing of what it was intended to do. There are less PvP'ers in the game overall, the competitive PvP scene is destroyed, and 90% of top players are gone from the game.

So no, it's not a matter of opinion. This game sucks compared to how it used to be. Imagine your precious PvE, except you can't move any time you use any power, half the powers are bugged, and the other half work completely differently than they normally do (with zero in-game explanation of this). Yeah, there's a reason these changes didn't make it to PvE. CoX would lose 90% of all their subscribers....not just 90% of the PvP'ers.

As far as the rest of your post, get over it. There is trash talk and stupid people in PvE too. And all other games. Either block it out, or learn to enjoy it like barrier does.

In every form of competition there is two groups of people. One is the gentlemanly player who does his best to always exude good sportsmanship. Then there is the more arrogant and boastful trash talkers. Neither side is better than the other and the only time trash talk can get to you is if you let it. The real problem comes when you expect someone should behave the way you think they should. free will will prevent that from ever happening. If you are easily irked by trash talkers it is more on you to make sure to not to fall into the trap of it, because that is the reason why the trash talker does what he does. You have so many options in this game for ways to avoid this that to complain about it makes you seem quite silly. Disable cross faction chat. Close broadcast. Disable tells. Instead of expecting someone else to be more adult try acting like the bigger person in the first place.

P.S.: I am a horrible pvper and I litterally never stop talking, ever. I trash talk in every form of competion I have ever been in. Its part of my 'game'. I refuse to believe I should ahve to be nice and hold peoples hands and blow them kisses to try to get them into my part of the game. Fact is if they need that kind of coddling to get into pvp they probably have no place in it. Not being a dick just saying.

Duel me.
I will work on my sig pic more when I have time.

wroooooong.

you should not tell anyone how to behave in a game that is already governed by rules. free will, what con said, etc, etc. the least regulated pvp is, the more fun it is. that has always been my experience.

your open chat box equates to signed consent when it comes to this.

i think being an idiot and keeping your chat box open when you're definitely getting emotional over online text is pretty funny.

ps, i was gonna give you a nice real life anecdote about me and my best friend playing mvc during college, but i'll save that for a longer post.

pps, if you're really offput by trash talk, consider fighting enemies that don't talk back... ie, PVE.

I am not fighting with anyone. I missed the starting gun if I am.

Additionally, I think that perhaps I know exactly what I am talking about as they are my thoughts.

ConFlict really hit the nail on the head for me in a lot of ways.

Ignoring the rants of the 'trash talkers' is, in fact, easy to do.

The issue for me remains, however. I for one would like to encourage good sportsmanship and discourse. The more active and vocal PvP crowd (not just in CoH) finds all kinds of 'nice' things to call me because of that.

Turning off communication during PvP is a snap. It still does not help to encourage better sportsmanship. As ConFlict pointed out as well, neither side of this issue is RIGHT. There is no right or wrong here, just a different viewpoint on what fun PvP entails.

This all goes right back to there having to be a 'winner', apparently even in a forum thread meant to educate, which is fascinating to me. I am very intrigued by the mental processes of others, especially those that seem to view things very differently from me.

I am here to have a discussion, not to do battle.
