Steelclaw's Stupid Question of the Week
I'd hate to think that someone could be immortalized for going AFK from mission 2 to mission 4 and coming back right at the end, because of their cat, and have that be written up in song and story as part of the history of the game.

Obviously if they were going to offer something like this in the first place then it would likely be tied in to some kind of contest or wide-market promotion. Perhaps a marketing scheme to draw attention to the older game when the new up and comers are entering the scene.
So, for the sake of argument, let's assume that the contest reality-side will include the winners being flown to a centralized location where they will all sit in a room together at state-of-the-art computers. They will be allowed breaks between missions to avoid potential AFK issues and there will be a team of IT people handy to handle any disconnect or other technical issues.
Maybe they may even offer a viewing link on the CoH web site so all we non-qualifiers can watch on close-circuit streaming video.
My mind wanders so often you've probably seen its picture on milk cartons. - Me... the first person version of the third person Steelclaw
Actually I'd laugh at that...
"Super Amazing Man shall be forever remembered as a caring, if easily distracted individual. Instead of helping his team during their daring raid, his superhearing caught the moaning yowels of his cat on the wind. Thinking that this was the last time he'd see Mr Tiddums, he returned home to find that his poor feline had been sick all over the new shag carpet and was feeling poorly. He rushed him to the vets with all the superspeed he could muster, the vet diagonised Mr Tiddums with merely an upset tummy from some Crey catfood and was fine to return home. Dropping Mr Tiddums off at his sister house, since he couldn't stand the thought of leaving the poorly feline on his own once he was gone, Super Amazing man rejoined the group with the simple words, "sorry guys...cat was sick..." from there he bravely went to his heroic death...
...the statue of him has been comissioned with Mr Tiddums cradled in his arms as he made his superspeeded dash to the vets, showing that not all heroics require a man to save the world, sometimes, just caring for an ill feline is enough..."
Yeah, I think I'd do that, as long as I got a decent amount of ingame stuff, maybe a statue of some sort.
I don't see why it's a stupid question, I think it's a very good one.
And since I already "killed off" PK... sure I'd throw him into the fire for virtual immortality.
Now HERE is a stupid question: Are banana goats blue to truffle hunt in the twilight?
While I wouldn't want to sacrifice my main character, I do have a couple of characters that would qualify that it would be an honor to participate.

Everyone know that if Bannana Goats were blue they'd show up. Truffles are sensitive little brafelsnacks. They could pick out a blue Goat in swiffleseconds.
They're red. Red DOES show up, but it does so in a very snurpflous way. Red is also the colour of the Truffles favourite food, the lesser worple bungle. So they gambol blithely over to the goats, and instead of smurnching happily, they get compglobberated. Any fool knows that Bannana goats prefer their food globberated.
GG, I would tell you that "I am killing you with my mind", but I couldn't find an emoticon to properly express my sentiment.

You, sir, are awesome.
I'd do it,
If I had a character that was a year old
Or any character above lvl 35
At this point I have 8 50's and at least an equal number in their 40's... I'd have no problems sacrificing one. That could be very cool. ^_^

Not unless I was planning to quit CoX forever. I only really have one character who has a fleshed out enough character to really warrant being included in canon (Adeon Hawkwood himself) my others are basically just powersets with a name and costume that were done based on "ok, that looks good". Since he is my favorite character to play I wouldn't really want to give him up.
Besides, I now have two versions of him so I'd be losing two characters .
I asked a similar question back when I was reading the Blue Cow city of heroes comics, when War Witch originally died: what would you consider an acceptable reward to risk going into a mission where if you didn't rez within a certain amount of time, either via rez powr or an inspiration, your character was perma-dead, name retired? Would you do it for a history plaque? A special badge? Would a statue of your character if you perma-died, somewhere in the city (say, in Boomtown when they rebuild it), be reward enough?
Anybody who'd say yes to either of our questions is a more interesting player, to me.
3) In order to qualify for the honor, the Devs want a hero (or villain, this is a co-op mission) who has a developed past. In other words, only those who have long proven themselves as worthy will be allowed to participate. The character must be a long-standing one (say it's been in existence for at least a year) and meet a minimum level of 35. So no rolling up a character and power-leveling them just for this purpose. |
For personal comparison, I checked my roster of characters. The sole survivor from my first wave of alts has 836 hours. The character that clocked the most patrol time was from my second wave of alts with 996 hours. Note: they haven't had any significant play time in the past couple of years. The more recent "well played" characters have mid-400 hours.
Edit:
How to find your character's total time in game.
Teams are the number one killer of soloists.

How many seconds does it take to cover the roof of a dog house in flapjacks while riding on a unicycle?
Also and this one is slightly serious, what would a shriner's powersets be?

Okay, so we have the letters of Omega Team who nobly sacrificed their lives to save the world on a mission from which they knew they would not return.
This week's Stupid Question: If the developers offered a closed Task Force that would not only influence the direction of the game universe's future but would also result in all characters on the Task Force becoming part of Canon... would you offer up one of your characters for the job? Now, before you answer... consider a few restrictions/guidelines: 1) ALL your character's actions on the TF will become Canon... so if they are the true hero of the day and lead their team to ultimate victory they will be remembered as such. If, on the other hand, they die in the first mission... that will also be well-documented. 2) This is, as in Omega Team, a suicide mission. Once you finish the Task Force you will lose access to that character. You have the honor of having them part of CoH lore, but you won't be able to play them anymore. 3) In order to qualify for the honor, the Devs want a hero (or villain, this is a co-op mission) who has a developed past. There I was between a rock and a hard place. Then I thought, "What am I doing on this side of the rock?"
To answer the original question: No, because if one of my long-proven characters went along, Omega Team would conquer the Rikti homeworld and somebody would have to rewrite a bunch of game history and we know how they hate to do that.
Even though he's been with me since the very start of the game, I think I'd be willing to offer up Kiken's demise in a glorious blaze of Scrapperlock. Although I have this sneaking feeling his heroic last words would be "stupid autorun..."
However, it turned out that Smith was not a time-travelling Terminator
Not an issue. I have a level 50 who's about what...three years old now? He was going to be retired as I feel I have little more to say with him as a character and with a story anymore, and considering he's an Australian Aboriginal creation creature, he'd see his death as part of the natural cycle.
But being over seven feet tall, looking a touch like the Hulk, and being a SS/Inv Tank...the Rikti would remember him.

With a heavy a heart many of my heroes would step forward and offer to join in any mission as critical as Steelclaw suggests.
Of my many alts and numerous 50s I can tell you which ones have the strength of will to step forward and which would seek to help in other ways. Its not a stupid question at all.

I have a couple of toons who would most likely do something like that. My Rad/Arch Defender Mercury Green has been round for some time.
My Mace/Willpower Brute, Lord Quagaar mostly likely would too, because hes just a crazy enough Villain to help save the world.
I would, without hesitation, line up any of my toons for this.

I haven't poured my life and energy into a toon only to have him deleted and taken from me even if it meant having said toon join the canon forever.
